Carmine's powerful enough to where the only people outside his family he needs to remember are the exceptional ones who can either harm or help his family in some major way. He knew who Ralph was, because Ralph was raking in a million dollars a month in a joint NYC construction project with Johnny Sack (of which Carmine saw a large cut). Paulie was pure muscle, a minimal earner at best, and might as well have been the janitor at the banquet hall for all Carmine knows or cares. He's got literally hundreds of those kind of soldiers scattered all over the city and he doesn't know who the fuck any of them are either. The reason Paulie went and robbed/murdered Minn Matrone was so he could immediately give the cash to Tony - he realized (at last) that he was never more than Tony's oldest thug and if he was lucky he'd be allowed to keep that job despite his disloyal ambitions.

Quite an interesting scene. Paulie broke protocol by talking to the boss of the other family. His ego grew and he believed his tactic would take him somewhere. In the end, he realised he was played, he got embarrassed and had to start back at square one as his tactic got him nowhere except being used. The way this was directed in the end was brilliant. Somehow "your father got run over by a trolley?" is horrible, insulting and extremely funny.

This is the funniest scene in The Sopranos. Carmine's look of confusion while talking to Paulie, not knowing who he is is priceless. When he said the think about his dad being ran over by a trolly had me on the floor. I completely lost it at Paulie's face when Carmine said John never talked about him

1:28 Paulie's ego has plummeted
@humbleopinion14992 жыл бұрын
This was a delicious triple whammy for Paulie. Firstly, his ego got a belting. He wasn't the important person he thought he was. Secondly, he realized Johnny Sack had played him for a fool and thirdly, he realized he had better quickly make himself very valuable to Tony in case he had been caught "talking out of school". Beautiful moment when he looked long and hard into the mirror.

Carmine being genuinely confused causing Paulie to question his entire existence is classic.

Hope nobody missed the subtle classism there when it shows that Carmine is coming there as favour to his hired help (housekeeper's daughter's wedding) while with Paulie, it’s his family thing (groom's cousin). Paulie never belonged in Johnny Sack and Carmine's inner circle.

tony sirico played paulie magnificently. the changes of expression, the comedy, the brutality. not bad for a former mobster himself.

Just coming from the scene when Chris asks Paulie where his arc is, fearing his life is unremarkable and searching for that big event that'll save him from mediocrity. Paulie accepted that he is "half a wiseguy" and was comfortable with the hand he was dealt in life. However, it seems Paulie also wanted an arc but it completely backfired on him because he did it biting the hand that feeds him. God I love this show.

Paulie walks up and surprise kisses Carmine out of the blue. And Carmine doesn’t blink. A guy that I don’t know walks up and kisses me like dat? They’d find him next to Frankie Carbone, hanging frozen in a meat locker.
