It’s an old Sicilian tradition...; a principal cannot refuse a request from an old neighborhood friend once cheap luggage is handed over.
@MrBodin26

There were no school principal's in old Sicily, therefore it can't be a tradition. Mostly peasants lived there, school was not a common thing back then in those parts. :)

One of my favorite little things throughout The sopranos is when either Tony, or one of the guys is talking to somebody that they want something from in this case Paulie is having a "conversation" with the principal and right when they walk away there's this face of disgust. The gangsters in the show want to have their cake and eat it too, you can't have a reputation of robbing, killing, extorting people and expect them to want to associate with you.

I really felt for his "mother" when she was being excluded from the people she probably thought liked her and would be her social group. The scene where she's in her bed is one of the saddest moments of the show. Then you find out she's not wearing her teeth, snitching on the ladies, and it's a different dynamic.

Look at the differences between Paulie's custom suit, topcoat, vs. the principal's off-the-rack suit. Sitting there in the office he looks like a fashion model.

What a wonderful guy Paulie really is. Here he is, trying his best to get his Mum included in the old ladies social group. Compliments his old friend on his skin clearing up, even gives him a suitcase as a gift (prob an expensive one) Trying to repent for all the wrong he has done in his younger days. Deep down Paulie was a really nice guy.

What a load of shit! You mean the guy who murders pensioners, intimidates kids, stirs trouble for his boss and friends, is rude and aggressive to anyone who he views as smarter than him, that murdered an innocent man and his young daughter in error and was totally unrepentant, hires shoddy materials to keep children safe in a funfair, murders a waiter in cold blood ? Such a nice guy.
