Hey Sorastro, this is probably my favorite video. I bet I have watched it a dozen times. The music is truely epic. I think for me it shows the way you highlight the miniature. The gems are fantastic and the little white details that you do. Thanks Sorastro & have a great day.

Great work - as always. I found the skin painting in this one particularly great. Applying a base skin color, then darken it with shade, only to apply the same base color again to layout the highlights (which is now brighter due to the shading) seems like a great trick. Thanks for this!
@womblissimo66668 жыл бұрын
Again an excellent video --- I was a bit critical in an earlier video of your treatment of shading on lighter areas ... I feel now that you are treating them as beautifully as all your other areas -- well done again Maestro. I went out and bought a whole bunch of paints just the other day and started priming my little minis - you have made me want to take up this hobby - Hat off again.

Just have to say superb videos! You know I have to say that one of the things I love most about these videos is that you don't use an airbrush. As someone for whom that's just not practical, it's very discouraging to watch professional painters whip out an airbrush to do a good portion of their foundational work. So - thank you for sticking with rattle cans and paintbrushes!

When I paint I occasionally get a tiny clumpy ball of paint forming at the very tip of my dentist brushes. This makes painting very fine area of my miniature more difficult. Do you know what is causing this and what I can do to fix it?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi! Hmm I'm not sure to be honest. Perhaps try thinning your paints a little more? :)
@thatPUNKdude8 жыл бұрын
Sorastro's Painting ok I'll give it a shot. I think it's just the paint drying quickly and forming the small clump.
@Superslemmet8 жыл бұрын
I get that too, especially when thinning my paint with water. I doesn't happen with GW paint medium though, but medium is more for making the paint more transparent, it doesn't thin it. Might try thinning with airbrush thinner, though that might dissolve the glue in the brush. I just carefully remove the lump with my fingers if I get them.

My guess is that the "left side" is coming from Syndrael's video :) (it mentions some colors not in that video like retributor armour, golden griffon ..., averland sunset is mentioned twice, no mention of cadian fleshtone...) Sorastro's Painting Mind answering a few questions? How do you go about getting good clean, straight lines when using very thinned down paints? For areas like the leather pouches and straps on Leoric do you use thicker paint? When painting small areas like that, it is hard for me to paint small straight lines or paint hard edges, the paint just doesn't stay put. This also applies in areas where two colors meat on the mini and there isn't a hard detail separating the colors. The paint moves too much when thin. (I make sure to ensure my brush isn't over loaded.I often drain the whole brush and reload after mixing paint for instance.) Any suggestions? Thanks for the compliment also!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi Pat! Yes.. I think for areas like those thin straps etc. using a slightly thicker mix is the way to go. It sounds like you're already doing your best not to overload the brush; I don't know what kind you're using, but a good quality brush will also make a big difference when it comes to controlling the flow of paint :)
@Beardybaby8658 жыл бұрын
Awesome video tutorial sir! This is probably a silly question but 1. Do you use two different same size brushes to do the hands and the other same size brush for the robe? 2. If you only have one brush for all of the different base colors, do you need to do complete brush wash between colors or does rinsing them off with warm water do the trick? I was just curious because this was going to be my very first attempt at painting figures in general and I was just worried about changing colors or if I need to buy more brushes, thank you sir!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi Nicholas! I'm pretty sure I just used one brush for this whole mini (a Windsor & Newton Series 7 Size 1) and I just rinse the brush clean using cold water from my water pot between colors. This is quite a tricky mini to paint if it's your first - had you considered painting Syndrael first as she's a fair bit easier? :)
@Beardybaby8658 жыл бұрын
+Sorastro's Painting that is true, I probably will start with her, but you do such a good job, I should at least be able to make it look half as good lol
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Just keep those hands resting on a surface - especially for the finer details - and hold the brush pretty close to the brush end and I'm sure you'll do great :)

Awesome video! Now, I know this guy (not me), who got Descent when it first came out and tried to start painting them then, with little to no guidance. Now when this guy (It might be me) painted Leoric, he really ballsed it up; so much so that he decided not to paint the others. Is there anything this guy (me, it's me) can do to strip this figure and take a second shot at things? I've seen some people try stripping plastic minis and the miniature seems to have really suffered.
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
ROFL Mike :) I'm afraid I've never actually tried stripping a miniature so can't really advise, although I'm pretty sure it can be done. You might also be able to simply paint over your previous attempt - as long as the paint wasn't caked on too heavily...?
@hipsukun8 жыл бұрын
Google "paint strip plastic miniatures". Dettol, Simple Green, and Fairy Power Spray, are safe and often mentioned. Be alert for that one guy who has only stripped metal miniatures and happily suggests something crazy like break fluids.
@noreasternbrewmaster87058 жыл бұрын
Hi Mike, fortunately I know this guy (not me) who painted up a batch of storm troopers poorly (he looked kind of like me). Then because their splotchy paintjob wasn't quite screwy enough, he dipped them in tudor satin Minwax. (Ok, it was me). I then saw Sorastro's series. Unlike Sorastro, I screw up on a lot of things, but on the bright side, I'm very good at fixing mistakes. Long story short, LA's Totally Awesome Cleaner. They sell it at the Dollar Tree, for a dollar. A 2 day soak and a gentle rub with a tooth brush took the Storm Troopers back to brand new.
@bodilydismemberment8648 жыл бұрын
thanks for this one as well, as said last time you made me pick up the brush again and am having fun. I was wondering though, I used to do this but I am not sure if it would help me anymore after seeing your tutorials. I used to apply a thin glaze of a darker tone when shades and highlights were done to slightly blend it all together, to unify them, will this help or make it into a mess ? also love really love the music, it is your's from what I understood ? where can I listen to it, really love it a lot !, thanks for reading and have a great day :)
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Bodily Dismemberment Thank you! Yes indeed - you certainly can add a thin glaze to help blend the highlights (it's something you'll see me do sometimes). Just keep it nicely thinned - ideally with some medium and apply it in one or two thin layers to get a look you're happy with. Thanks for the compliment RE the music! I'm releasing an Imperial Assault-themed album this Summer, after which I'll begin work compiling a fantasy-themed album for release next year :)

thank you for the fast reply, greatly appreciated, I also posted it on your fb, so, sorry for the doublepost ;) thanks for the tips, I have a a lot of vallejo's medium and thinner lying about, never used them ( was afraid to do so) always switched to water somehow. but def will use the medium now. great to hear about the music, that is something I really am looking forward to! have a great day and thanks for all the advice and inspiration. I also pass it forward to people wanting to start to paint, your tutorials are very user friendly, inspiring and crystal clear.

sorry to bother you again ; I am sitting here armed with inks and the reducer. do I add extra water to thin the mix of ink and reducer or use the reducer to thin the wash ? hope the question makes sense, thank you :)
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Bodily Dismemberment Hi! I would just use the medium to thin the glaze down, and no water :)

If you were not filming the procedure, how long would you estimate it would take you to complete this mini from start to finish?

Hi Marc! It's difficult to say, but very roughly around 4 hours perhaps?

congrats on a great tutorial! quick question, are the golden corners of the book present only on the left side?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+TheDbeez Thank you! That seems to be the case looking at the sculpt :)
@MarkYale8 жыл бұрын
That's so funny you asked. When I painted mine up I sat for so long looking back and forth at that damn book trying to figure out if my sculpt was messed up. :)
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
It does seem odd doesn't it? But being a magic book I suppose the unevenness of the decorative corners is one of the least strange things about it :)

Nice work man, very well done! Though I think that last shade on the face was maybe a teensy bit too much. You wouldn't happen to know a good place to get some citadel shaders as a set would you? Their prices are even worse than I remember :/
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Karkarov Thanks Karkarov! (Yeh.. I agree I was a little heavy handed with that last shade!) I'm afraid I don't know where to get the shades except GW - sorry.
@DKarkarov8 жыл бұрын
It wouldn't be terrible except their sets don't offer much savings or give a great selection. Sigh.
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+Karkarov True. I would just buy whatever individual colours you know you're going to need :)

What brand and model is the brush that you're using?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Hi! I'm using mostly a size 1 Windsor and Newton Series 7 for this video :)
@beld96708 жыл бұрын
Excellent work. I've been lacking motivation to break out my Descent minis (lost motivation after finishing Mice & Mystics stuff), and this could be just the thing the get me started back up. Two questions though: 1) what size/brand brushes are you using here? 2) With multiple thin layers of shades and built highlights, this is doable by a beginner, but is at the way way upper end of beginner painting, in my opinion. What details would you have added to boost this to an intermediate level, since I have neither the skill nor patience to learn to do the freehand stuff required for advanced mini painting?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! For this video I used mostly a Windsor and Newton Series 33 Size 1 brush. I'm honesty not sure what else I would want to do to Leoric; I mean he was difficult enough already being so tiny and fiddly :)
@beld96708 жыл бұрын
You're not kidding. I painted Syndrael over the weekend and enjoyed the process and result. I started Leoric last night and just about pulled out my hair in frustration over how many times I had to go back with the base coat on the robes because I missed 1 more area that was behind some of the straps or whatever. Now...don't make us wait another 6 months for the next installment!
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
Lol OK.. actually if the Patreon support continues to grow then I will be producing 1-2 Descent videos every month from September :)
@beld96708 жыл бұрын
that's excellent news. I do have a question, having nearly finished my effort at Leoric and now that I'm eyeing some different models -- how do you make your color choices? It's uncanny how spot-on the whole palette is. Just trial and error? Some magical color theory I don't yet understand?
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+B Eld Hi! I'm not a expert on colour theory or anything. I just pick colours that most closely match the character art, and mix additional tones if necessary to get them as close as possible. I sometimes get it right first time, but sometimes have to try several different combinations to get a nice clear recipe for the tutorials, and I always test the colours out on spare minis before filming :)

Great video! I will paint a different wizard soon and your video helped me a lot. And it is great that you reply to people's comments about brush care, they helped me too. And I have one question of my own: is it possible that my lamp causes paint to dry too quickly on my brush? Could it even be that the high summer temperature causes this? Which light source (light bulb) do you use?
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Thanks Mentoliptus! It sounds quite possible that your lamp and the summer temperatures may be causing the paint to dry up on your brush. But also - can I ask what size brush you are using?
@MentoliptusBanko7 жыл бұрын
I am using GW Small Layer brush, not sure what size it is (www.games-workshop.com/en-EU/S-Layer-Brush).

I got inspired by your videos to try painting my Descent minis. I finished my Leoric today and I am pretty happy with the result, except after applying the matte varnish (Citadel Purity Seal) the vibrancy of the colors is significantly reduced and some parts of the miniature look almost like they have some sort of "frosting". I assume i simply applied too much of the varnish, allthough a friend of mine said that the reduced color vibrancy is normal after applying a matte varnish. the colors on your miniatures seem fine though even after the varnish was applied. could this be related to the varnish brand? I assume you tried out some other varnish brands before settling on your favorite? have you come across these vibrancy reducing effects with certain varnish brands or have any other hints to what might be going on here? by the way...it was fun painting the mini :-)
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
Hi Mario! Sorry to hear about your "frosting" issues. I believe there are a few possible causes of that including spraying from too great a distance or the levels of humidity.. It might sound strange but I've heard that rubbing a little olive oil on the mini with a Q-tip or something can help diminish the frosting effect - it's worth a try :)
@mariokohler49167 жыл бұрын
Sorastro's Painting thank you. I'll try varying the distance and amount on the next minis and see how it goes. that the distance could be a factor didn't cross my mind.
@Sorastro7 жыл бұрын
No problem! Yes I think it's something to do with the varnish partially drying in the air before it hits the model, so try getting a little closer :)

Where can you buy figurines just by themselves? Any for that matter. Not the whole game sets and stuff

Well you are in luck! Thanks to the kind generosity of some of my viewers who are showing their support through Patreon, I hope to soon earn enough to be able to produce videos full time, which will mean a lot more regular content (for Descent and Imperial Assault in particular). +TrotterNation79 Yeh, I'm sorry they're slow coming. You have to understand they take 40+ hours to make, and my time is very limited at the moment. That's the reason I started crowdfunding on Patreon - to earn enough to be able to quit my day job and make these videos full time, which I will be doing from September, so you can expect 1-2 Descent videos every month from then :)
@Sorastro8 жыл бұрын
+TrotterNation79 Well you can set your pledge level to whatever you want and you can also set a monthly limit, so - for example - you could just pledge $1 per episode but set your monthly limit to just $1 so you will only ever pay $1 per month regardless of how many videos I release (and some of my videos will be for Imperial Assault and other games of course, but 1-2 will be for Descent).
