You get some common grammar too, and expressions that missing on standard lessons, occasionally check on grammar and adding it step by step is okay. Then check standardized english rules before exam to know what to look out for aside from natural speech and good to go. You will forget standardized english later anyway when you use spoken english.

I took a conversational Japanese class for a few years, and there were times when we'd pair up and have to try to have a conversation entirely in Japanese for practice, and it was basically like this. We could talk about absolutely anything as long as it wasn't in English, and that's actually a lot harder than you'd think when you're speaking a language other than your native and you're not fluent.

One time, I tutored english to this one dentist. Every time, he'd prepare the learning materials and simulation conversation sheets. All I had to do was read the papers to him. I was literally getting paid not to teach, but to read stuff in front of him. The guy was pretty chill though. He still paid me each session and gave me snacks after.

Tbh, casually dropping "fuck" into the conversation is the most realistic thing you could do to sound like a native English speaker, which is kind of hilarious. "Fucking" as an adjective/adverb or a placeholder word like "um" is even more common, lol... Technically not appropriate for professional or polite conversation, but that doesn't stop us from overusing it anyway!

The trap is that because it's relatively easy and the pay is enough to live, most will get stuck there with no career advancement. It's fine when you're single with a one br apartment, but 10 years on and you have wife and kid, its no longer good enough but you're trapped in the comfort zone unable or unwilling to escape. Whereas if you had good JP & EN skills, there are many other career opportunities to move UP in the paygrade.

@@SilverforceX Sadly, Silver speaks the truth. So many "supervisors" were just teachers who stuck around when everyone left and got promoted by attrition. They weren't any better at teaching than newer recruits. I only stayed and worked for a year in Tokyou, but I had college, Boys & Girls Volunteering and Tutoring under my belt, and I became a pretty popular teacher. I felt bad for the guy from Australia who was a genuinely nice guy with good teaching skills except that no one could understand his accent...Everyone loved him tho! HA!

Whoa, Sora is working night shift now! This sketch was perfect toe! 😂 In seriousness, it’s true even in teaching English to speakers of other languages as well. The best way to correct pronunciation is the same way parents do. Through repeating it back correctly in the response. I might say back, “You think my teaching is perfect? I try my best. You’re very kind. Thank you!” To steer away from swear words, depending on the level of English, you can either not draw attention to it and repeat back an acceptable alternative like, “I see you’re surprised,” or if they will possibly understand, you can explain that it’s a word only said in very casual context, not professional ever. 😅

As an eikaiwa “instructor” I can assure you a good number of my lessons have been 40-50 minute of talking about anything from video games, how to pick up girls in English, explaining the word “boner,” and discussing past relationships over wine at the basement floor of a department store in Osaka. I'm so happy you guys use "fuck" casually. Where i grew up in New Jersey, there is barely any stigma around cursing. Our teachers will say fuck, and only really get you in trouble for it out of spite, or if theyre having a bad day. I should note, I'm 38, so this was 1990's New Jersey. "Fuck" is just such a fun word with many uses.

Even if I'm not a native speaker (I'm Italian) I gratuated in university in english and japanese language and literature and I even took a proper certificate to learn HOW to teach english. Even if teaching english in Japan could be "strange" I still WANT to do that, not only because of my love for your culture and to improve more my japanese, but also because I understand the importance of this job! The funny thing is that after moving to Japan from America it took me an entire year to find my first job. Every English school either wanted me to have a college degree or experience in teaching English in order to get the job. Just being a native English speaker is not enough. At least in the Kanto area.

Briefly I was a teaching assistant at an English cram school in Japan. On my first day the teacher tasked me with quizzing the children via flashcards with pictures. I held up the first one and prompted them by saying "what is it?" and she immediately stopped me and told me to say "what's this?" because that's what they had been taught because it's easier for them to say. I immediately objected to relying on recognizing phrases without knowing the individual word meanings and questioned the teaching of contractions before the individual words, as well as taking a lazy way out of teaching the kids how to pronounce things properly. She just responded that that was the lesson plan she was given. I'm American, she was from Singapore, we taught primary school aged students.

This is actually a great approach to speed up fluency in language learning. You talk in your studied language about anything that's relevant to you, because anything relevant you will remember it. It's called 'comprehensible input'. Also the part about not correcting the student is actually also part of the process. It's basically like how you would speak to a baby/child. You don't really bother correcting them, but you give them an example of how you speak while also being attentive about how they speak, and it gives them a safe space to practise and stretch themselves, building their confidence.

I saw so many Americans without any experience (not even university) that became "good" teachers... I also met other Americans that graduated in English and had masters degree etc and received the same value, they were really frustrated :( . The issue is that the same asian parents that pay random foreigners to teach English, wants their kids to study hard otherwise they won't get a good job. These parents are paying a lot of money to a random person without experience to teach their kids!!! xD Fun fact, I am not from an English speaking country and made some money giving English classes as well 🤣 was fun and I made good friends. If you are young and want to go to Asia (any country), I really recomend doing this.
