Sorry, but Apple TV 4K (2022) Quick Media Switching is a LETDOWN

Күн бұрын

We tested the Quick Media Switching (QMS) function on the Apple TV 4K (2022) box together with an LG G3 OLED.
Quick Media Switching is an HDMI 2.1a feature that promises to eliminate AV blackouts, but only when the frame rate is changed, not when there's a switch in resolution or dynamic range formats.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable manufacturer Zeskit. If you're thinking about getting a new HDMI 2.1 cable, please support this channel by considering buying from Zeskit:

For what it's worth, I moved from a C9 to a C3 (77"). I usually use my AppleTV for streaming. I really like the QMS (Quick Media Switching) functionality. The C3 and the AppleTV work very well with each other with QMS on.

Speaking for myself the "QMS-VRR" [POPUP] is far worse and much more annoying than the completely blackout pause you get switching between output resolutions. So hopefully there's a way to turn that notification off!!!

Exactly what I was thinking. They should have just put the ”QMS-VRR” text inside the smaller HDR/Dolby vision popup. The current popup is way too annoying.

I personally find this setting useful for SDR sports. Some services output at 59.94 while others output at 60.00. This change causes a blackout. You could leave your ATV in SDR with match DR and FR (like an AV enthusiast would). Since you don’t change dynamic ranges then it wouldn’t have a blackout. I’m guessing in Europe you will also appreciate this if you change a lot from 60 to 50 Hz as well. Then again I don’t know if you all have HDR sports via streaming widely available. Here in America we still have ESPN with glorious 720p.

Actually. Your “not tip” about setting the ATV to Dolby Vision and turning off match dynamic range is a brilliant setting. It nearly removes all blackout for us non QMS users. It makes the entire operation more fluid and no more annoying blackouts. HDR content tone maps perfectly to DV as far as my eye can tell. SDR does much the same. Have not noticed any issues. What I have noticed is no more LG art gallery images popping up when I play content! :)

@MysteryMii

The resolution of the video shouldn’t have any blackout effect with QMS. The Apple TV is the one that’s doing the upscaling here, not the TV. Therefore, playing any video that’s in the same dynamic range as the default output with match dynamic range enabled that’s lower than 4K should not result in any blackouts because the output resolution is not being changed.
@hdtvtest
@hdtvtest Жыл бұрын
@MysteryMii: Good point. We were referring to the resolution change on Apple TV UI, as shown at 3:35 in this video.
@maperez12
@maperez12 Жыл бұрын
@@hdtvtest on one hand there is no reason why the ATV should change resolution. However, this feature would not have helped with sources that change the resolution, I’m thinking like back in the day with cable TV, some STB would change resolution based on the channel (1080i or 720p) and that change was annoying. This made DIRECTV encode all channels in 1080i so users wouldn’t have that annoying change, but maybe I’m getting old.

I have been leaving my ATV set to DV 60hz as there are now a lot of apps such as Peacock where you will only get the HDR feed when the box is set to either HDR or DV. Also some sports apps will only give you the 4k feed when the unit is forced to 60hz, such as Fox Sports. Even setting the ATV to SDR 4k doesn't fix this. You can see this if you use Xcode and enable the playback HUD. When will all these apps fix these stupidisum! I used to love matching frame rate etc, now I just leave it set.

One thing to keep in mind if you use the “purist” setting to match dynamic range of the content being played; this can be very painful if you watch a lot of videos on the KZbin app - dynamic range and resolutions are all over the place for YT videos, so you might see a lot of black screens as you browse and play videos… note that it even impacts ads, which can be a different format from the video being played. 😐

Good explanation! Although I must say for Apple TV 4K, for me it feels like the frame rate is more important for most home users, because it’s conversion of sdr to Dolby vision or HDR is really well. As in I have the feeling that how Apple converts it, it is still really close to how the creator intended it to look, only with a bit more punch. It seems if you are going to convert image (what most consumers will do, for extra punch) Apple TV’s algorithms does it a lot better and more natural than the television. How do you feel about this?

Hi Vincent I am subscriber on your Chanel years now I recently say lg responded with auto dimming issue u mentioned on recent video can I please mention this issue too? The problem is simple. People using macOS cannot by default without paying a for a third party solution write to NTFS formatted drives. And LG OLED TVs do not support any of the macOS proprietary formats like HFS+. The only free and universally working file format is exFAT. This allows for use of files above 4GB (which is a limit of FAT32) and also allows for use on both Macs and PCs. LG should consider adding support for exFAT formatted USB devices and make it easier for the vast number of macOS users to use their USB drives with LG OLED TVs. 🙏

i perfer to use my apple 4k 2 gen using 4K SDR but its funny how my apple tv keeps forcing 4k hdr as default after a few days of use. not to mention how youtube keeps locking up after a few days of use and then i am forced to reboot my apple tv to get youtube working properly again and of course changing back to SDR whenever that happens too. my apple 4k 1st gen never did this.

Does Quick Media Switching work with the latest AV Receivers from the big brands like Denon that have HDMI 2.1? I watch stuff with all kinds of different framerates and am sensitive to stuttering so QMS would be a crucial feature for me.

Unfortunately nobody knows because the HDMI have just changed the standard, if a AV supports HDMI 2.1 doesn't mean that it supports QMS - VRR
