The Trial has to be my favorite episode of the whole series, the way it completely changed the narrative we've had so far in just a few minutes is insane. I love the little detail that only another Diamond could have shattered Pink, cause in real life a diamond is something so hard it can only be cut or polished by ANOTHER diamond, so it makes sense

The Diamonds are the leaders for a reasons... I mean, they are the leaders because they are the ones that make more gems... But even without that, they are the biggest, strongest and most powerful gems. It would make sense that only a Diamond would be able to shatter a Diamond and why Blue Diamond wanted to know how a simple Quartz was able to shatter the most powerful type of gem.

4:42 I’m no different in thinking that Lars should’ve tried to save Sadie, sure. But then I remember, that not even 2 minutes prior, everyone was a witness to Steven having to turn himself in when Aquamarine threatened to have Topaz crush Jamie’s skull on a whim. If I were in Lars’ shoes, I’d freeze up too. Topaz was also willing to bash in Steven and Connie’s heads throughout their fight, and was only stopped cuz of their reflexes with the bubbles and sword hilt. On Aquamarine’s orders, she was willing to go for the kill. Hell, Aquamarine could’ve just frozen someone with her wand, and let Topaz just go ham.

Although he came back to life moments later, Lars is basically the third person to canonnically DIE in this show. First one was pink, technically. Also, "IT WAS A SWORD" is probably one of my favorite Blue Diamond lines, I can't get enough of her voice actor and character. And not only that, but do you remember when Bismuth said something important about the Sword? "i design this sword for a fair fight, it can cut through a gem's physical form in an instant! destroying the body, but never the gem".

To be fair, there was never shown at the trial a recorded image of Pink Diamond being shattered, so we wouldn't know for certain whether Rose used the sword Bismuth made or another one that could do that job. On the other hand, they did show a picture of Rose Quartz and it looked like the latter was wielding Bismuth's sword. A lot of Watermelon Stevens were killed by GAP in their introductory episode, and by Malachite in Super Watermelon Island (beginning with the one first possessed by Steven).

13:02 Fusion being a take on relationships, there’s an element of intimacy. Garnet’s said that being a fusion for as long as she has, has enabled Ruby & Sapphire to get a better understanding of each other. Their temperaments, their fears, their wants, became more clear to each other. It’s not just romantic relationships, it can be with any really strong relationships you have, roommates, co-workers, even just dear friends. If nothing else, in those good relationships, you wouldn’t want anything bad to happen to them. I think that’s the sentimentality that Aquamarine was referencing. While this show only tackles it so lightly with the AIDS/corruption metaphor, fusion can also be romantically/sexually intimate. It pains Ruby & Sapphire to be apart because they’ve been together for so long and through so many life and death experiences, through a war no less. We never get to explore that with many characters in this show, and we never see it with the Topaz fusion, but Aquamarine’s threat obviously got to them.

God, back when "The Trial" aired the entire fandom went INSANE. I remember people drawing yellow with pink's shards in her hand, I remember people being so dead-set on Yellow doing it. This is still a top 10 episode for sure.

I just realized that since Lars was brought back to life like Lion he will probably stop aging and live forever. Edit: Apparently the creators have said they do age, just very slowly. However Lars will still live way past all the humans he knows right now. Lion has been around for at least 200 years and in real life the oldest lion recorded was apparently only around 27. Considering the oldest human to ever live was 122 Lars is going to be around for a long, long time.

I still don't like Lars even after the redemption. Him deciding to not be a pussy and fight gems doesn't make me automatically like him. He was still a shit friend to Sadie even before the kidnapping thing. If dying and being brought back to life is what makes you reevaluate your life, then you were beyond saving. You should have died a shitty person and he got an out because Steven is a good person. You didn't wanna change when you had everything you needed; Friends who wouldn't judge you, parents who love you and actually lets you walk around being a fucking douchebag instead of disciplining you, a girlfriend who genuinely cares about you, a job at a donut shop in a city that only like 20 people live in. Lars had one of the easiest lives ever and he still found shit to complain about and people to blame for it. That is an incredible mindset to me and the fact that people just gloss over that because he helps out a couple of random gems and Steven shows me how little people actually pay attention to the human characters in the show other than Steven, Connie, and Greg. His life would not have changed if he was actually able to go inside his own hair and get back to earth. I'd even argue he'd become even more insecure for basically having a pink skin condition and thinking everyone in Beach City would continue to judge him even though they never did in the first place.

I like how all of the Off-Colors can be read as metaphors for real-world marginalized groups. Rhodonite (the Pearl/Ruby fusion) is, like Garnet, an interracial couple. The Rutile twins are conjoined twins (fun fact: branching like that is a thing that real world rutile gems do). Y'all called Fluorite an orgy; I'd use the term "poly relationship" personally. And the absolute precious cinnamon roll that is Padparadscha has some kind of disability; there are real people whose ability to process things is delayed like that.

Aquamarine is a magnificent bastard character and she's too malevolent to be working with the Topazes. You have to appreciate how Rebecca Sugar and her team of writers have built things up to the point of the trial: 1 - Pearl losing her form to Holo Pearl back in Season 1 when she got stabbed. 2 - Eyeball Ruby being the eyewitness to Pink Diamond's demise, claiming that she saw Rose Quartz "shatter" Pink Diamond. 3 - Bismuth being unbubbled and telling Steven about Rose's sword: that it can destroy the physical form, but not shatter the gem (hence the Breaking Point). Now we have Blue Zircon trying to make sense of the eyewitness accounts and realizing the point of the trial: to explain how it happened. For the record, Blue Zircon is a good lawyer; Yellow Diamond simply did not appreciate the accusation. As for Lars: sometimes, characters take about 4-5 seasons to get their moment. Ronaldo is...Ronaldo. Also find it hilarious that the guys' annoyance at Lars is now passed to poor Padparadscha (which in real life is a rare version of the sapphire).

It's unknown if Lars has the same powers as Lion. I mean, Lion existed ever since the time Beach City was founded (since he was still a normal lion when Rose met first mate Buddy). That means he had almost two centuries to master them. Not to mention his portal powers are activated with his roar. Assuming Lars has the same powers as Lion, he would probably need to shout to make a portal.

I love Lars’s character growth but the fact of the matter is not everyone is made of the stuff heroes are made of and in real life people do die. Lars is a realistic person when it comes to danger but he also learns to become the stuff of what legends and heroes are made of but it came with a price, people in real life aren’t so lucky. Honestly I wouldn’t of been mad if Lars stayed dead because death is a big part life regardless of age and that sort of harsh reality should be in kids shows more, bluey does an excellent job showing death.

The start of season 5 was sooooooo good. The trial is one of my favorite episode’s especially bc of how it points out the flaws in the who shattered pink diamond story. Lars actually dying wasn’t on my radar of things happening in the show his character development was pretty good and just that happening revealed that’s exactly what happened to lion he died than got resurrected by rose. Topaz’s voice definitely caught me off guard💀 . The off colors were a nice new group of gems to meet.

Fun fact I can say 'cause I know you have already finished the series!: When the episode "Lars Of The Stars" premiered (the one where Lars is a space captain), Rebecca Sugar (the creator) said that they were interested in creating a possible spinoff series called "Lars Of The Stars" about Lars journey back to Earth

That can still happen. Rebecca has expressed the desire to continue the series and said it's possible that may happen. Since Steven's story ended with "Steven Universe Future", maybe she will give the spotlight to the side characters. I mean, I so want to know how the Pearl and Ruby that make Rhodonite met and fell in love. We know the basics of the story, but we don't know the details. Rebecca wanted to put an episode in SUF about it, but because she was limited to a few episodes, she couldn't do it.

I love how they use color in this show with things like the Zircon lawyers, where the Prosecutor was green because both Blue and Yellow Diamonds wanted Rose to pay for her crimes, but the Public Defender was blue because Yellow wanted to shatter Rose/Steven immediately without bothering with a trial, and Blue was the only one who cared about letting Rose/Steven speak in his own defense (even if she technically only wanted him to incriminate himself)

Sapphires don't use their eyes. If you remember, their whole life is already known to them. They rely solely on future vision as that is what they do. They tell Diamonds, for example, what is going to happen. If something like a Ruby bumps into them, she will say, "It was bound to happen." She doesn't move to prevent it because she isn't using her eyes. She is just looking into the future all the time. That is why our Sapphire is different. She said that for the first time, she couldn't see what was going to happen in her life after Ruby saved her. Her whole life was previously straight line, but Ruby altered fate. She actually uses her eyes and lives in the present but uses future vision for important things. Not to know what will happen, but to pick the best option for the gems.

To me, Aquamarine makes the best villain...her insufferably smug attitude and typical uppercrust contempt for subordinate Gems almost bit her behind, but she faced down the Topazes' mutiny and didn't fold, unlike Holly Blue Agate. The Trial confirmed Blue as Best Diamond. Despite the terrible pain she would have felt having to listen to the one she believed had murdered her beloved Pink, Blue insisted on giving "Rose Quartz" what she considered to be a fair trial, and seemed determined to find out the truth of the matter, brushing aside Yellow's insistence on executing "Rose" without a hearing, much like how Blue still protects the bubbled Rose Quartzes at the Zoo. Steven and Lars in GTP: Grand Theft Palanquin, Homeworld edition! Some fans saw the Gem writing at the entrance to the Off-Colors' kindergarten and concluded that this belonged originally to Pink Diamond. I wondered whether Pink Diamond herself sent Padparadscha to its relative sanctuary, since that particular Sapphire would have served Pink and Pink would have known that Padparadscha would be shattered or harvested once her flawed vision became known to the other Diamonds. I think that once Lars realized that he probably wasn't going to get off of Homeworld alive, that freed his spirit. A lot of Medal of Honor-type war heroes (who survived) related how they accomplished their incredible deeds because at that particular moment they felt they weren't going to live to see the next day and just did what they had to do.
