What's actually hilarious is how the show dances around the term "Dungeon Master." They can't say "Dungeon Master" because that term is trademarked by Wizards of the Coast, so they instead use "Lord of the Dungeon." The lunatic magician can literally control monsters, control the very environment of the dungeon itself, and he even has a huge book in front of him. He's an in-universe Dungeon Master with his own ties to the story. He's the Dungeon Master's self-insert!

More of a translation thing if I'm not mistaken, Kui hadn't had much direct contact with anything D&D prior to writing Dungeon Meshi, her inspiration came from the Wizardry games, and she later first interacted with D&D through the first 2 Baldur's Gate games.

@@gristen never saw that interview, but I know as a rule of thumb D&D is fairly niche in Japan, and most fantasy writers from there would have experience with games inspired by D&D rather than D&D itself. The exception to that is Lodoss, which was specifically translated from a D&D campaign by the SNE group.

Chilchuck deeply cares about the party even though he often times act like he's only there for the money. He also has a hard time putting his kindness into words so ends up sounding harsh or cowardly. He sees the realistic risks of the dungeon and how dangerous it can be to base decisions based on emotions. I think this episode helped show who Chilchuck really is by having him talk with someone that is not a party member.

Firstly, Chilchuck is a whole entire mood. Secondly, This "go back and then return" plan makes so much sense for the party since the time-crunch of getting to Falin while there's still something left of her to resurrect is no longer a factor. I mean, yes, it's gonna suck for Falin to be in thrall to this Mad Mage and biomagically overwritten with dragon stuff, but as long as she's serving the mage's purposes in finding the king or whoever, there's minimal chance she's going to be killed out of hand or dissolve into unresurrectable goop.

Fun fact about Kensuke - "Ken" means Sword. So Kensuke is literally just a silly name Laios gave to... the sword. It's like Power naming her cat Nyako in Chainsaw Man.
@aliciaz62247 ай бұрын
In the official English translation of the manga they keep the name “kensuke” and add a translator’s note explaining the name- which added a lot as a reader! But it got me thinking about what some good localizations would be (given that Laois as a character isn’t Japanese, and is even meant to be a little ignorant about Eastern cultures). I think something like “swordy” would’ve fit really well lol
@fuyahanabi13047 ай бұрын
@@aliciaz6224 Yeah translation note is just not a great way for official subtitle. Swordy would be good! But I think there's also a gag in that everything in the setting is so Western medieval high fantasy and there's this sword named oldschool braindead Japanese name.
