Something that I always like to bring up is how fitting the title of “The wrong way to put out a fire” is. It’s honestly a perfect way of looking at what Endeavor did to Touya. Endeavor sparked the fire, and instead of giving it calm and gentle water or something to put it out, he basically poured gasoline and paint thinner on it, and then proceeded to ignore the fire and let it build, not realizing that he was not only the root of the problem but also the primary one making it worse. And by the time he did realize that, it was all just too little too late.

Agreed and it's such a shame as well as frustrating to see that not everyone seems to understand the meaning behind the title and instead many people are arguing over who was the actual cause of the downfall of the Todoroki family and pointing fingers at just one person alone to blame for everything that happened unfortunately.

I'm so glad this episode activated your almonds like this. The Todofam drama remains one of the highlights of the entire manga. Glad you guys were able to absorb this in a mature way as well. I think even if Rei was doing "what she could" or was "the best she could do" still doesn't absolve her of being the mother of the todoroki family. She's not the cause, far from it, but she has come to embrace the responsibility that she also failed her family. Its beautiful and doesn't at all run away from how horrible Enji was. I still tear up when reading/watching this part of Touya's backstory. Glad you enjoyed it too.

Just to clear some things up, (not justifying anything here) Rei was the one who suggested Fuyumi being born as at the time she thought it would be a good idea to have them be as a support pair with one another, emotional, etc. so it was rather a mutual thing at FIRST. This was seen a few episodes prior but I assume you guys may have just forgotten about it a little

I absolutely LOVE that Horokoshi doesn’t wimp out. He doesn’t excuse Endeavours actions or give him some retroactive, more digestible background - he WAS a monster… In the most human way. I don’t need to explain the other side of him because we’ve been exploring it for the last several seasons, capable of both good and bad. He can either cower in the face of his past, or do better, and he chooses to try and be better. That’s what makes him so compelling to me. MHA has many issues, but Endeavour is honestly just the perfect characters to me. There’s just so many layers to him, he honestly feels like one of the most raw and human characters I’ve watched in a LONG time.

I have learned to respect Endeavor's characer arc. There's nothing that would excuse his horrible actions and there are no excuses tried to push here. Him feeling guilty about what happened to Toya and the whole family is totally deserved. This guilt, this regret can make him grow. And that's what I'm looking forward to see.

One of my top things with how Endeavor handles Touya is he's method is "do what i say, not what i do". Endeavor tells Touya how there is a life outside hero work and surpassing all might while he is fully obsessed with being a hero and surpassing All might. When his child is literally seeing him like that, him giving half assessed assurances to Touya would never had worked. Endeavor lit a fire in Touya and then did everything wrong to put it out.

There are so many parts to this episode that ring throughout the entire series. I don't even know how to tackle them all coherently but I'll try. Context When they started delving into Endeavor’s inner struggle, the biggest thing on my mind was how to reconcile Endeavor as he is now, the morality of Endeavor the No.2 hero and the actions of Enji Todoroki the father. I'm so impressed how they did it. As a hero of his caliber He must have some amount of ethical/moral grounding, so the way Toya’s treatment and the eventual treatment of Shotos removal from the other children came out of a place of concern filtered through his own shortcomings with how to be a father makes so much more sense. This reframing does a lot to link the pieces together especially since The only access to Endeavor's past we had until this point was from Shoto who is definitely a Biased narrator along with having gained consciousness when things had already reached a boiling point, and thus painted our initial views of Endeavor during season 2. But it is merely a reframing for where it all comes from and evolves, it does not shy away from the horrid actions that occurred. The biggest flaw endeavor has Is that he can see his own limits and weaknesses. He saw he couldn't surpass All Might and found his new way to achieve his goals, that way was running away and foisting all responsibility onto someone else. Be it his kids, or his wife, he recognises he is not a capable father, that he can only be a “hero” and does not address it leaving it to fester in Toya and neglectful of Fuyumi and Nastuo. He looked at his weaknesses in those respects and decided it's not worth trying, in direct opposition to how far he goes for his ambitions as a hero, how he continued persistently building his metaphorical bridge that ended up inspiring hawks. And that goes to show how much he cared about all might and how he did not become a father with anywhere near the desire to be one. And while it would be nice to say that he's improved, that flaw still remains in his decision in season 5, where he couldn't see his family being happy with him there and removes himself from the situation and the freezing in front of Dabi in EP11, when his failings are staring him in the face he can only run away. The big thing about Endeavor's avoidance of being a father, is summed up perfectly by Dabi, “The only thing you taught me was how to increase my fire power”. It's no wonder things turned out as it did, everything endeavor did, from early stage training building up pain tolerance and resolve, to neglecting him once his quirk grew to leaving him alone in the forest only served to light the ambition into him and grow his flame quirk to breaking point. Dabi’s flames are emotion based; the buildup in him engulfed him. Endeavor never taught him how to control his flames or how to redirect his ambitions into other productive ways adjacent to his desires, he simply said no. Support gear and training could have made Toya a great hero, and an Endeavor sidekick, but whatever care for his son he had only did the opposite. Toyas views on the women of the family It’s a small section, directly referenced in only 2 lines of a child, but I like how subtle this dismissal view of Toya’s is. To Toya, his ambitions lie in being like his father, and the source of all his problems lie in his quirk being too much like his mother. Seeing his father as the leader of the house, Rei being complicit in his own birth and Shotos yet critical of him in the problem she caused him, informed his views on his mother as a nuisance. Additionally a small part in Episode 11 “Dabis Dance” when Fuyimi is born Toya is looking at her sleeping and reaches out his hand to her, endeavor stops him to not wake Fuyumi up, Toya then stops and goes to hug endeavor instead. It’s a bunch of small things born from well intent that have far reaching consequences. Series effect We now have a more full parallel of the series in that the greatest heroes are born from hearing those magical words “You too, can be a hero” Deku had all might and Shoto had Rei, But in turn that the most devastating Villains are born from being told “You can't be a hero” Shigaraki had his father and Toya had his. The Todoroki family addressing Toya When the family accepted dealing with Toya together, it is such a meaningful sentiment because of how we looked at the endeavor situation, how they each looked at the events leading up to Toyas death. It is without a doubt the Endeavor household, but everyone was in that house and they all hold a piece of that responsibility whether it’s just hindsight, misplaced guilt or tangible responsibility, it is a shared one that can’t be properly addressed by offloading it onto just 1 person. Power Scaling But at the same time a sentiment is as far as it goes, because when you think about it for a few seconds, that's a really bad matchup for the Todoroki family, like 8:2 to Toya. The reason Toya was considered a failure was because he leans too much towards Ice resistance, So that invalidates Rei, presumably Natsu, Presumably Fuyumi and half of Shoto completely on the offensive front. It's also been heavily reinforced that Toya’s firepower eclipses Endeavor’s, and Shoto is even weaker than that. Realistically the only way Toya loses is him burning himself out or getting hit with a Family “FlashFreeze HeatWave” since even Shotos version alone is stronger than a 100% hit. But the 2nd caveat is that Toya is willing to Prominence Burn in a city even if he dies, the Todoroki family is a team of huge scale attacks that put civilians at danger. Correction Back in EP11 Endeavor said Fuyumi was the child both of them wanted, him to continue searching for Half half while raising Toya and Rei thought siblings would support each other which would help since Endeavor clearly has important and frequent Work to do. Toyas Burns spurred him to go for Natsu and Shoto.

Todoroki kids - Touya (eldest) is 24 - fire quirk, some ice resistance, villain Dabi (assumed dead over 10 years) - Fuyumi is 23 - ice quirk, school teacher - Natsuo is 19 - ice quirk, college student studying medical welfare - Shouto (youngest) is 16 - half fire, half ice quirk, UA student/hero intern There's about 3 1/2 years difference between Fuyumi and Natsuo, and between Natsuo and Shouto, so I'm assuming that all the kids showed signs of their Quirk by the age of 3 at the latest. With Touya only being 4 1/2 when Natsuo was born, but already used to training his fire before being told to stop once his hair starts turning white around 3. And it's half white before he turns 5, mostly white when he's 8 (and Shouto's born), and entirely white at 13. Shouto's 16 since his birthday's in January, and it's currently late March/early April (his birthday was over the timeskip in 5x25). Touya's born in January while Fuyumi's birthday is in December of the same year, so they're about 11 months apart. So she turned 23 (in season 5 between JTA and MVA) around a month before Touya turned 24 (during the timeskip after the Kurogiri reveal while Hawks was gaining information about the PLF). Hawks is also born the same year at both Touya and Fuyumi, but both of them are older than Hawks who's birthday is in late December (he's a couple weeks younger than Fuyumi), and he's currently 23.

To reiterate my original comment, this episode pretty much solidified my love for Natsu, Fuyumi, and Rei as characters. Despite how little screentime they get, they've pretty much proven how strong they are just by being here because they ultimately care for each other that much. Like I said before, the Todoroki family plotline is easily the most engaging side story in my hero. Minus Enji, I would also say it's the best-written.

The thing is that I used to love his character, but after the events of season 6 and the manga (avoiding spoilers) his arc has easily become the most narratively unsatisfying aspect of the story for me. I know not everyone feels this way, but for me, his arc started off great with the setup, but the payoff has been underwhelming to say the least imo. As for what I meant by "best-written," I really love the way Horikoshi writes the victims for the most part. Like, they feel so realistic to me in a way that I haven't seen in a lot of fiction. It's also all very thematic as well in a really subtle way (again, I won't get into spoilers).

It’s interesting how this all went downhill after Toya unfortunately started experiencing issues with his body that couldn’t be helped. Because during the Dabi reveal we learned that despite the circumstances that started the marriage, Enji, Toya and Rei were happy. Rei even wanted to have more kids with Enji. And one bad roll of the genetic die helped it all spiral downward

I would say it's not the "bad roll" that caused the spiral, it was the good roll that did. Because suddenly Endeavor had a "reason" to isolate Shoto and ignore his other 3, the oldest of whom still could not let go of the hero's dream. I think that's the intentional portrayal. Endeavor is not being abusive right up until Shoto is born.

Another really messed up thing to think about is Reis body. We know that pregnancy and birth are hard on the body. That many kids can be dangerous to a woman physically. We also have no idea to know that every pregnancy stuck in those time gaps. It’s possible there were miscarriages in between kids which could have resulted in more abuse from Endeavor, physical harm, and a lot of mental and emotional trauma from such an ordeal. We have no true way of knowing.

Honestly, when this stuff was happening in the manga, there were some really yikes takes from people. People saying that Touya didn't have it so bad because Endeavor never abused him. Like, news flash, neglect is a form of abuse. Not just neglect, emotional trauma. It felt like people were trying to shift all of the blame away from Endeavor and onto the victim, Touya. Because there are so many ways Endeavor could've handled this differently. First, you should never try to live out your failures in life through your children. Side note, Endeavor seeking out Rei to create a powerful weapon is so yikes. It's not an act of love. It's an act of seeking power. Moving on though, once he found out Touya's quirk harmed his body when he went overboard, there are several things he could've done. A. Tell Touya that he'll love him regardless on if he can surpass All Might and that he loves him for who he is as a person and not his quirk B. Tell him that he can still be a great hero, just not the Number 1. And that he's fine with it because Touya tried his best C. Tell Touya that he can still be the Number One hero but only if he finds a way to stop or minimize the damage done to himself(like how the Nurse at UA told Izuku to find less self-destructive ways to use his power) D. Actually talk to Touya and stop expecting the problem to just go away, especially since he created it If all of that fails and he still decides to have more children, there's always one final option(hypothetical if Endeavor had treated Touya somewhat better) E. Stop training Shoto and Touya separately. Some heroes become partners to cover each other's weaknesses. He could show them both love and have Shoto cool off Touya when he begins to overheat and have Touya go for more powerful fire blasts that Shoto can't do. Raise them as sibling heroes But he didn't do that. He instead ignored most of his family. When he wasn't ignoring them, he was harshly training Shoto or yelling or hitting Rei. Touya saw that he was born and tossed aside for his father's ambition. He revealed that he'd been watching his family after he burned up too. And he likely saw that Endeavor didn't change even after his "death". Endeavor got worse. He was replaced in life. And his death didn't change anything. He probably questioned why he was born at all. Until there was nothing inside him but emptiness and hatred. This was the wrong way to put out a fire. And that's how Dabi was born.

There were also people completely shifting the blame on Rei. Honestly this whole thing is a mess it all started because of Endeavor but both parents could have done more I think but shifting the blame that hard felt fucked up. There were also people demonizing Touya for snapping at Todoriki and I mean, yeah he did ? He's a child and wasnt in the most healthy place to begin with. again fucked up to shift the blame. Endeavor makes effort to change positively NOW but it doesnt erase what he did and that's partl why i love the character

I agree with most of this, but I’m not sure if they should have supported Toya destroying his body to have him continue his training. I always felt if Enji told Toya he will love him for who he is and he doesn’t need to surpass All Might and had actually kept spending time with Toya outside of training him, to reaffirm his love that Toya might not necessarily want to be a hero. This flashback showed us Toya continued his training to earn his father’s attention and affection again. I think if this kid got affection and time from his dad after the reveal of his quirk destroying his body that he would not have even necessarily wanted to even be a hero. He might have stopped training altogether if he got affection and time from his father, because he no longer needs to be a hero to earn affection.

Hold up. Sure, Endeavor initially married Rei to have a great kid, but he did genuinely tried to make the relationship work and love her. It all spiraled down quick when it was clear that Toya had bad genetics.

I really appreciate how in depth you go here! You're right, the manga/anime/story of the Todoroki's is incredibly nuanced and you guys bring up things I feel most reactors don't discuss such as the ambiguous consensuality of Rei/Enji and treating Touya self-harming as a kid seriously not just buying into him being a brat for wanting his dad's attention as well as of course how heartbreaking the general stuff like Shouto trying to defend Rei and Fuyumi and Natsou hiding while Enji is on a rampage.

I like how much the context changes even tho it doesn't affect the concepts. Enji bought a woman to breed super children, But he didn't treat her like an object he did care for her. He loved his son, and even tho it wasn't perfect he still saw a hero. Like he wasn't a heartless demon along the way. But it was always wrong and it just kept getting worse and worse we understand it so well and dammit its just so well written. A man's sins burning the lives of him and his family away

It seemed like they tried to form a family, when Toya and Fuyumi were little, the short time when things weren't... well the whole beginning of the family wasn't great or ideal by any means but it wasn't the absolute worst, if only for like a few years. Endeavor did not start as a monster, but he turned into one.

Yeah he wasn’t as bad as he ended up being at first, but he never “tried to come a family.” His entire reason for having the marriage and having kids was never family-related, even at the beginning. He was pretty transparent about his reasoning being to find a “successor” to surpass him.

I was not disappointed by the discussion in this episode. I was reading these chapters as they came out, and the anime adapted them beautifully. It was one of my most anticipated episodes of the season because I love the entire Todoroki storyline, and getting this backstory is so good and building up to the climax of these characters arcs. The entire thing is just so tragic and could have been avoided if Endeavor had actually tried to be a father, something he avoided. But it’s not only Touya who didn’t know how to put out a fire (both literally and metaphorically), but Enji’s as well who’s ambitions to surpass All Might destroyed his family from the inside. Lighting the fire inside Touya that spiraled wildly out of control as Enji continued to ignore it. Over and over and over again. I have mixed feelings about Enji, he's well written and has an interesting character arc, but I hate him as a person even though I do want him to change and become better for at least his family's sake. Which is why I like that it’s an atonement arc and it’s shown that his family doesn’t have to forgive him, and not really a redemption arc. I honestly hesitate to call anyone in this series a monster, because doing so dehumanizes them and creates the dichotomy of hero society and ignores that everyone of these characters are human beings with flaws, some of which made terrible choices and some who ended up with no choice but to fight back. And sometimes I think a villain is in the right more than the hero, even if I disagree with the methods they go about it. But I put a lot more blame on an adult who abused his wife and kids in the pursuit of power over placing any blame on his children, especially Toya who became a villain due to the abuse he endured as a child. Even though I don't condone the way that Dabi's hurt/killed people, he at least admits he's a villain and I can understand what pushed him so far. But with Enji, I can't really empathize with abusing/hurting those around him while considering himself a hero while he had over 20 years to change how he treated them. Then we have Hawks who is so so so interesting to watch and the more we learn about his past the easier it feels to understand the way he is, and why he’d decide to support Endeavor even when in many ways Endeavor shares many similarities with his father. But Hawks is also traumatized by his past, and can see that Endeavor is changing/atoning now, so offering support means accepting the flaws of his past and helping him move forward. Hawks is meant to foil Toya and be his opposite. The hero born from a villain, while Toya's the villain born from a hero. While Dabi is doing everything because he can't let go of the past or his family, Hawks is ignoring his own past and wants to move forward in his life, continue to distance himself from his name/family, and running away (similar to Enji running from his family). But both of them were abused and neglected by their families. Both with powerful quirks who had high expectations placed on them from a young age. Keigo grows up with nothing, but ends up the No. 3 hero by the time he's 22 because he got recruited for his Quirk; while Toya grew up with everything but became Dabi, one of the most wanted villains in Japan, because his Quirk was too dangerous for a hero.

it almost seems like I'm downplaying the whole thing by saying this but the Todorokis are the textbook definition of a broken family, it always feels like they're stuck in limbo unable to forget the past but unable to look to the future as well and it's a wonder how they're able to live like they do but as Rei said as well Shoto is their hero, the only one who's given them a little spark of hope for moving forward in some way

Cause just so you know, Jeanist mentioned here in this episode that they need to find out how Touya survived from that forest fire accident and how he became Dabi. That means we'll be getting Touya Todoroki backstory part-2....

doubt someone will tell them this so this will be more for everyone else who sees this. On the international heroes from left to right. Elecplant: A hero from the U.S, appeared on the movie 2 Heroes in the flashback during All Might's time studying abroad in America, two villains rob a casino in Los Angeles, California. Elecplant and Cow Lady join the first responders, but allow the villains to get away after a short skirmish. They watch from the sidelines as All Might wins the day, and they learn about him from David Shield, then on World Heroes' Mission together with Hawks, Tokoyami and Godzillo on the U.S. Since during the flashback All Might must've been on his early 20s, that would put him on his 60-70s age wise now since AM is around 55-56 currently. Quirk: Electricity Generation, it grants him the ability to produce blasts of electricity from his body. His hero costume helps him channel his electricity. - Big Red Dot: The No. 1 Hero in Singapore. He helped fight Humarise there along with Majestic, Momo and Setsuna. Quirk: Tidal Bore, his quirk allows him to produce a large and powerful blast of water from his mouth. - Salaam: The No. 1 Pro Hero in Egypt. He helped fight Humarise in Egypt alongside Kamui Woods, Edgeshot, Mt Lady, Kaminari, Sero and Shiozaki. Quirk: Papyrus, his quirk allows him to turn his body paper-thin, allowing him to slip through narrow spaces and ride the wind, making him very fast. - Nyikang: He's a Sudanese Pro Hero that's seen walking amongst the crowd at the I-Expo preview in Two Heroes. Quirk: Spirit Possession, his quirk allows him to convert his consciousness into spiritual energy which he can send towards a target to possess them, he's also seen carrying a large sword, presumably for combat purposes. - bottom one is unknown for now, all this info I got from the wiki and the movies.

Should be noted, the shots in between Natsuo and Shoto’s birth (the one of Enji and Rei looking at each other) aren’t actually in the manga, at least Enji’s side isn’t. And yeah, as the implication of that with how it immediately transitioned to Shoto being born and just a completely exhausted and miserable Rei is just BEYOND horrifying.

Actually, that shot is kinda wrong in the anime. In the manga, that shot has a dialogue between the couple where Endeavor tell Rei that they'll need to have the right kid in order to make Toya give up, in which Rei understandably is opposed since she doesn't want to crush Toya's dream, but nevertheless, Endeavor convince her.

This episode annoys me with how every character gives the credit for the Todoroki family coming back together to Shoto when Fuyumi is the one doing the bulk of the work. She and Shoto both made a habit of going to see Rei, and Fuyumi is almost entirely responsible for the family dinners that grew to include Endeavor. After watching season 4 I started reading the MHA manga. Why? Because Enji, the character I hated the most, became my absolute favorite character, and that continued through all the manga. I even have Endeavor tattooed on my arm. People don't understand often why. The thing is Enji isn't a monster, he is a good person who did monstrous things, that's part of his journey. Understanding that he was a monster, and he needs to make up for every monstrous, terrible thing he did is his path. It's not a redemption, it's an atonement. My other favorite character is Hawks, and I'm also getting him tattooed. In part, the reason I came to love Endeavor was because of Hawks. The way Keigo looks at and thinks of Enji changed my perspective, his unwavering support. He is the person that Endeavor needed in his corner bcs he constantly pushes him to be better bcs while everyone thought of him as monstrous, Hawks looked at him like he could be more, and believed that he could. Also Toya is 24, Fuyumi is 22, Natsuo is 19, and Shoto is 15. The gaps arw 2, 3, and 4.

Touya would be 23 when Fuyumi is 22. They were born in the same year, Touya in January and Fuyumi in December, so at best there's a 1 year age gap, and there's a month where they are the same age.

Considering how shitty the divorce system is in Japan (and their Ie family system), Rei choosing to leave would've seriously harmed her (that is, if Enji agreed to it at all, and the divorce was successful), so she was stuck between staying with her abusive eugenical husband and losing her children, not having any financial support, being shunned by her family, and etc. Todoroki family drama is deeply rooted in Japanese social rules and culture. For example, the whole issue very traditional Japanese hero Endeavor had with very western-coded hero All Might is coming from the cultural belief that hard work prevails over the western concept of innate talent, with everyone believeing that All Might is a natural-born hero. So Endeavor's envy and desire to surpass All Might is coming from his insecurity and fear of All Might's 'natural' talent winning over his own pure hard work and determination. Endeavor vs. All Might (from Endeavor's perspective) is basically a metaphor for East vs. West views on exceptionality.

Endeavor's story is such a perfect example of how the flames of ambition can change a man and destroy all that he loves if he can't reign them in. And even now when the ambition has more or less been extinguished by the weight of the responsibility he now has not only as a hero but as a father trying to atone and make things up to the family he destroyed... The Monster that ambition gave rise to remains.

It's really sad there was a time when I would be so excited to see this kind of video from them, long analysis and great reaction, but their contents have gotten so much worse after BONES killed their love for MHA, literally every criticism and hate they threw at MHA are 99% due to cut contents, new contents, garbage animations, or changes from the manga, and because they NEVER read the comments, they just keeping blaming and hating on MHA when BONES is the one responsible for everything bad. They have been complaining since S3 and said how much S3 second half would've sucked if it wasn't for the Deku vs Bakugou fight, but everything they complained about the Licence Exam Arc, from the pacing to animation to even the plot-holes are all just the anime For example the Hellish Todoroki Family in S5, arguably one of the most important scene in that episode was cut from the anime, when Natsu kept throw shades at Endeavor, making everyone around the table uncomfortable, Fuyumi smiled and changed the subject, asking Shoto how was the food in school, but beneath the table she was pinching Natsu's thigh, that's literally what she said she's doing in 8:36, that kind of depth and complexity in characters were always there, but the anime removed them all Or the last episode when the civilians armed themselves with support items and fought the villains, not only was everything about Detnerat got completely cut from the anime so they won't know Redestro has been leaking weapons to the market, which was also a payoff to what the series set up way back in S2E18 when the villains said there were legitimate companies selling weapons to the dark market, but most importantly, the whole "civilians vs villains" was already built up in S5 but the scene was completely removed from the anime After the My Villain Academia arc, one of THE most important arc not only to the story but also to the world building, MLA used it as propaganda to spread the idea of civilians should defend themsleves, and when Star Servant, the old man who controls glass attacked, before Endeavor arrived there were several panels showed a civilians influenced by the news and decided to fight without waiting for the heroes. But the anime cut that scene because BONES changed the order of the arcs, so they can't show how the MVA arc influenced the story without giving us MVA first

With all of Endeavor's development, it's easy to forget how horrible he treated his family. He's the result of putting all your eggs in one basket and then breaking down when his child does not meet his expectations. The desperation of finally creating a successful hybrid spiraled him into an obsessive, abusive monster. What Toya said to Rei was harsh and cruel, but I can understand why he'd also resent his mother. In his eyes, she has no grounds to speak of his future prospects when her future was set in stone the moment she was "sold" for the purpose of a quirk marriage. Even though it was for the sake of her family, it's still pretty messed up because she's basically product and Toya lashes out knowing that anything coming from her just sounds hollow. With the mom popping out hybrids one after another, and Endeavor having no plans on Fuyumi inheriting his ambition, it puts into perspective how Toya views the women in his family. Hell, the same goes for Natsuo, who was a failure from the jump, so Endeavor doesn't even give him the time of day.
