Saw these badass MOFO's in Boston 2 days ago and they were on fuckin FIRE! The band was so damn tight, the crowd energy was so positive, people were dancing, smiling, singing along. The guys were TOGETHER on stage smiling, joking, showing love for one another and the crowd. It was a healing experience for the band I think. I know I waited 26 years to FINALLY see them live, after missing them by 5 mins at some radio Xmas show with 5 other bands that I didn't give 2 wet shits about. Drove like a madman through Connecticut just to watch "Squirrel Nut Zippers" take the stage. NOPE! But seriously, I'm so happy they buried the hatchet and made peace with each other,.......It was that or some promoter dangled 10 million dollars in front of them.

Luke, how were they assholes to him?
@lukerogers1518 жыл бұрын
Well, I think they kind of took advantage of him - they were all a few years older than him, not exactly sure what happened but I don't think they particularly cared about him. I don't know the full story obviously but that's what I've got from it. Not saying it's all their fault, Mike is a bit of douce as well and was on drugs around this time too. So he probably wasn't very pleasant either.
@williamhugo63596 жыл бұрын
I read his book and saw him live promoting the book. Mike said the guys in the band would constantly fuck with him like detuning his guitar after sound check and bully him into giving all band members song writing credits. He seemed genuinely pissed and didn't want Soul Coughing to make any money to screw with the other guys. like most of his solo stuff especially Haughty Melodic and Golden Delicious and Yes and Also Yes. Never heard from the others again

You hear his vocals failing on the chorus before he screams "FUCK!" I get the impression he becoming frustrated with his performance. Then he slams down the mic at the end. This looks like it was taken in the period when he was on heroin. His drug use may account for weaker than usual vocal delivery. They were't a huge band and TV performances were probably still a big deal for them. Must suck to hear yourself know your vocals aren't their best at such an important gig. Just and observation.

I wonder if it's also a case of biting off in the studio more than you can chew live. I tried doing that same bit alone in a room as someone who doesn't sing at all and sounded very much like he did. 2:04 Just listen to how tired and frustrated Mike sounds. You could argue that the intensity in his voice throughout the chorus was apart of the song, but not losing breath each line. Not to mention this: 2:34 (Ya heard that? That seriously made me cringe). Then at the end, he drops the mic. Probably not to be badass, probably out of frustration and just being burnt out. I think this gives pretty good insight on how the band was ethically and morally at that point. Toxic. Nobody was really good throughout all of this, especially Mike, and I love this band and their sound. If you look at the 2 meter sessions performances everything looks fine but then you go here an it's just like "Ah, yup this is just terrible." I personally haven't read Mike's book yet but with shit like that visible in a performance, heading into the book I can immediately assume at least some of what Mike's saying is true. EDIT: Read the book coming out learning a lot about drug addiction and recovery for many different kinds of people. Throughout this I suppose Mike has a diagnosis of Rock Star Syndrome. They heavily influenced a downfall of epic proportions in his professional endeavors and his bandmates did not help. Too many instances where they act like immature egotists for little to no reason. Thing is, I wanted to think these guys weren't as bad as they were hyped up to be in the interviews but damn was I wrong. Then with one last bit of hope and optimism I think they grew from this experience and matured, but they fucking didn't. Sebastian says in an interview there's no chance of a reunion unless one of the band-members die (I can bet that was a fucking jab at Mike). Unreasonable assholes that bittered the band experience and the drugs served as a decade long experience that could not be solved until the tumor that was SC (to Mike) was gone in which he'd need less of a use of the drugs for creative purposes and endurance. To get high to not receive a withdrawal as a payback from you own body. Luckily no one came out of this silent train-wreck dead. The end of Soul Coughing is the end of another tragic band story. I know now that what we thought was a never-ending jam session is what Mike said so many times before. "An abusive marriage".
@Lultschful4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for this. I dunno how informed your post is, but it sorta rings true to my ear. I remember back then being in love with Irresistible Bliss. But seeing them in interviews a couple times and thinking that they were obnoxious, pretentious pricks (I guess, mostly Mike). Which didn't keep me from loving their music, but kept me from trying to know more about them beyond the liner notes. And now, years later, Super Bon Bon is still one of my favourite songs ever, and Irresistible is an album I still enjoy listening to, but this comment here sheds a bit of a new light on Soul Coughing, the band. Funny enough, I'm Belgian and we get french TV out here, and I saw this performance on Canal + back then. I remember thinking "doesn't sound like they're a good live band."
@crudecube3 жыл бұрын
@@Lultschful Thanks. I’ve honestly just spent time reading many interviews from both sides and of course I’ve read the book. But the main thing I can conclude is, I can’t exactly blame anyone about why this band failed and I can only make educated assumptions. I understand Mike endured a lot of craziness, but at the same time, he himself allowed himself to inherit terrible personality traits, thus leading to him to act like a dick as well. So, at this point I see it from both sides: The band sucked for Mike and it affected his life in a negative way on a creative and personal level, yet up to 15 years later, he acted like a bitter old man about it (but only as of recent with the Ruby Vroom tours, has he changed. He’s actually more at peace with it now, and actually has considered collaborating with Sebastian again). I’d say each band member fucked it up in their own unique way, Mike with the heroin and progressively declining personality and health, and the other three with the mostly unneeded disputes with song rights and the high consumption of weed during the band’s life (it was insane how high these guys NEEDED to be). Nonetheless, I still love the band, and Mike’s solo work in my eyes is pretty meh. But I’m glad there’s so many cool people on the internet that are working to archive all of this band’s work. TL;DR The machine exploded because the components within in were a mess, but it’s fine. We like the music, and we’ll piece it back together

I saw them in Seattle in 1997. I loved them. They didn’t seem burned out but he did seem frustrated. He didn’t like that people in the audience were moshing and was telling people off for it. I didn’t understand why that bothered him and still don’t see anything wrong with moshing, I say live and let live. It was probably all his anger and frustrations spilling out.

All this according to Mike: The other band members were apparently huge pricks. The drummer and bassist wanted full co-ownership of the songs, including lyrics, despite Mike writing all of them. The sampler was utterly useless but thought he was the most important member of the band. I love Mike, but honestly I think it's all a bit he-said, she-said. He was on a shit load of drugs at the time and probably wasn't the easiest dude to work with, even if his bandmates were assholes.
