I love how people are finally starting to recognize that Teri was a victim. Not the villian. She was treated horribly by EVERYONE! Also I'm going to disagree about the villian of the movie. Yes, Maxine is awful, jealous, and manipulative. However, I think Big Momma is the true villian in this story. She's the reason why all of her kids act the way they do. She allowed Maxine to treat Teri horribly for YEARS. Big Momma also treated Teri horribly. She gave her youngest Bird a free pass to do whatever she wanted 😒. She pushed Teri to work hard in school and become successful. However, when Teri became successful, she used Teri for her resources and clearly resented Teri for her success 😒. The entire family is toxic. I believe that Big Momma's poor life choices led to the family's outcome. I really liked the movie when I was young and dumb, but now I'm seeing the movie for what it is. A movie about a toxic family that treats successful family members poorly. The favorite family members get away with doing awful things.

I hate how they tried to make her the villain so bad, it's a common trope in most black movies. If she's successful with ambition the movie gonna always paint her as an unlikable person. But she ALWAYS has a solid reason behind why she say or does something that the other characters don't like. Maxine was a maddd hater also, she one of those women who have a sense of superiority because they did it the "right" way she got married and had kids so now she thinks she's better than everyone, but really deep down she was jealous that all she could become was a married woman with kids, while her sister was the smart one, the most successful one, and the most independent one. She hated it, that's why she always picked a fight with her.

I will always stand on the fact that Maxine was jealous of Terri, idc. I think the movie tried to imply Terri was jealous of Max, but I think it's the other way around. Max wanted everything Terri had, her boyfriend, her money. She stayed in Terri's pockets counting her coins and trying to spend Terri's money. The definition of entitled. She always threw her cooking in Terri's face cause it's literally all she has. What else does she do? Terri is a successful, accomplished lawyer, but her accomplishments ain't shit cause she can't cook or do hair. 🙄That was insecurity talking. She was looking for a way to tear Terri down and that's all she had was cooking. "Mama taught me how to cook". Well become a professional chef and make your own money and get out of Terry's pockets.

I remember the first time I watched this as a child. I had to turn it off because I started crying. People loved this movie and seriously could not understand why. They bullied that woman, and honestly I know its considered a black classic, but I can't see it that way. The acting is great sure, the story was sadly very accurate, but to me a resolution never really came. Terri never stood up for herself and cut off her whole family, the ending was just outragously bad in my opinion. If Terri found her worth or the family realized they were just terrible to her (like literally any of the adults sticking by her side would have been nice.), then I can see it being a story of toxic family and how to either turn it around or how to push passed. But instead we got a movie that telling its audience that family can hate you, bully you, and run you dry, but if you leave the family, you are the truest of villans. It not only glorified toxic families, but glorified the idea of staying in the toxic family.

I actually always hated this movie. I think it’s so sad the way they treated Terri, and I have been the Terri of my family. I have always been expected to take care of my family bc I’m the oldest of 3. Terri paid for Bird’s wedding. She paid for Bird’s shop. She pays for everyone’s bills. & the film wants us to see Terri as the villain bc she doesn’t like the way her family treats her. You’re always deemed as disrespectful when you speak up for yourself in your family. I will never join accounts with a man. I will never allow family to live with me. "The message is we just want to give kids lives, not nessacarily good lives, just lives" this point stood out to me because how many times have you heard horrible parents who failed their children in many ways say things like "I did _______ and they turned out fine" totally ignoring any mental issues and trials their children has gone through, Ig implying that if they aren't DEAD they succeeded as a parent. Why isn't the goal to raise well adjusted and happy human beings? I mean you will see people with kids who clearly have trauma, anger issues and sometimes drug issues etc say these things. Where is the bar in parenthood? Toxic family dynamics seems so normalized in the black community especially, and it bothers me. I feel like there is a certain expectation for women to just deal with disrespect and pain, but there seems to be even more of an expectation of that on black women. I wish I had the numbers, but I just feel like its more likely for white people to recognize their family is toxic and just cut ties than black people. There seems to be this importance on a family being there for each other, but not TRULY being there for each other, and these types of toxic families seem so fake to me. I agree with you, if you have a family like that, just let go. I did cause if I didn't they would have ran me into the ground. Loved the video.

thank you for watching and i'm so glad that stuck out to you. as a disowned child of narc parents, i felt it was important to include that. black people seem to romanticize the bare minimum even if it shows that it's clearly not enough. that presence alone is better than no presence at all. it's not and i wish they would also stop demonizing others who can see that.
@elleofhearts8471
@elleofhearts8471 6 ай бұрын
I think raising well rounded and well adjusted kids isn't a priority because that's never been the standard or a reasonably achievable goal in black American history until extremely recently. Think about what it takes in order to raise children well. all the material, physcial and mental resources, generational wealth, familial resources etc, needed to raise a well adjusted child. Now put that in the context of black American history. How many in the general black population had enough of all of these things? or had enough of what's necessary to acquire them? Given that wealth, freedom, education, social saftey nets, civil rights etc have been kept from black ameicans from the beginning, it's not a big mystery how a movie like soul food ended up being what it is, both into existence and holding beloved ststus in balck culture. Its a product of multiple deficits and deprivation of black communities originating internally and externally. Raising your children with the bare minimum used to be acceptable and the most realistic outcome for most black Americans at a certain time. Because raising a family was most important thing women could do and violence and poverty were way more normalized. There's not a lot that black people can do in a white controlled society. Not to mention having a family was part of respectability politics, toxic feminity and masculinity, Christian values, and stigma management for lgbt people (Dorthy Dandridge's mother was a lesbian for example). As time has passed, people haven't grown out of that survial mindset. Many black Americans still grow up in poverty and in the generational trauma that's been passed down from generation to generation. Access to better economic opportunities, education, personal freedom, generational wealth, civil rights, access to healthcare, gender equality, freedom from from religious influences, etc are not privileges many black people still haven't completely had in recent history. So these hindrances perpetuate their harm over and over again. Plus we're only really recently in human history writ large, forming language and comprehension surrounding the concepts of mental health and family-power dynamics. The worlds general population has never been as educated, literate, and having access to information as easily as we do/ are right now. With that, comes the realization that a lot of fucked up things were normalized in the past. even as recent as our own childhoods and the cultural touchpoints that help define our collective/regional cultural identity. And these fucked up things are part of tradition and have helped to define black culture, whether you love or hate that fact. And most people don't like traditions being questioned or reevaluated. Even as educated the world population generally now is, we still have a really long way to go before people really start to see and accept that many things that were normalized from our fondest memories, whether personal, historical, or collective, and dearly held traditions were fucked up and wrong. Were literally only JUST NOW going in the direction we should've always been going in as far as rethinking cultural toxicity and toxic relationships dynamics of the past and present. But again that's because we've been kept away from accessing education, personal freedom, social saftey nets, economic opportunities, gener equality etc.

Big Mama comes from an era where you didn't talk about those hurtful, traumatizing & shameful moments because it would embarrass or tarnish the family name. Big Mama comes from an era where people suppressed all negative emotions & refused to resolve conflicts face to face. Resulting with a lot of fake family love, resentments & generational trauma being passed down. Big Mama carried those methods while bringing up her own family. Which is why when she got sick & died the family completely fell apart. Only when the family confronted each other with hard truth did they begin to heal & build true unity & love for each other.

@@samflood5631 I think a big part of the reason why a lot elder generations refused to acknowledge that the foods they were eating were contributing to the deterioration of their health was because prior to the 1960s food in America was actually healthier to eat than modern-day food. In the late 60s, companies slowly started to add various preservative chemicals into the fruits, vegetables & grains. Also, putting steroids into various meats. A lot of the elder generation didn't understand nor believe that such a thing would happen. Prior to companies pumping preservatives & steroids into American food, a lot of Black Americans who ate soul food lived to be in their 90s & 100s. Currently, there are people dying in their 60s & 70s. It's not necessarily the food itself. It's what's being pumped into the food that's causing the issue. If we were to eat soul food outside of America, we would actually lose weight instead of gaining weight & we wouldn't be as sick.

I felt bad Teri went through what she went through in the movie. There was a lot of things that were explored in the Soul Food TV Series that wasn’t talked about in the movie, one of which was that Bird,Teri and Maxine had a half sister named Nina who wanted Big Mama to be buried next to their father as well as the relationship between Teri and Kenny had while in high school.

Watching this video is so cathartic because I’ve hated this movie since I was a kid. The movie manipulates you into rooting for the wrong people and vilifying the real victim (Teri). Shit, the movie gaslights the audience like how the family gaslighted Teri. I’m glad that today, calling out toxic family members and disowning them is normalized and not taboo. We’re in no obligation to love toxic family members as you perfectly stated. Also shout out to Jennette McCurdy for her book I’m Glad My Mom is Dead and bringing to conversation to the masses and not pulling any punches. And of course fuck Maxine.

The way they framed Terri as the bad guy like the whole damn family wasn't playing in her face. They acted like her money, her home and her men were all public property. They expected her to just keep sacrificing for them over and over again. She was better than me because I would've put Uncle Pete in a home, sold the house and dipped the fuck out. They didn't deserve Terri.

At 11:46 No offense to all the black people that saw this movie in the 90’s… I’m pretty sure none of you were, and still aren’t, lawyers. However, a cease and desist letter, especially in this scenario, would not actually stop the sale of any property against the literal GUARDIAN OF ESTATE over said over the assumed property. By definition, a cease and desist letter is a document sent by one party, often a business, to warn another party that they believe the other party is committing an unlawful act, and that they will take legal action if the other party continues the alleged unlawful activity. The letter may warn that, if the recipient does not discontinue specified conduct, or take certain actions, by deadlines set in the letter, the letter's recipient may be sued. HOWEVER, as mentioned above, a GUARDIAN OF ESTATE cannot, and shall not, be sued for wanting to sell the assumed property, UNLESS maleficence can be proven (which Maxine and her “impressive” high school diploma 🤡 would have most likely failed to prove). Again, i know the average person is ignorant to law, especially being an individual during the 90’s watching this film, but this is all for show. The sad part is that actual stupid people believe this could happen in real life. Maxine and her family, much like the many people that believed this tripe, are very ignorant.

Rewatching Soul Food as an adult i’ve come to the realization that the family treated Terri like garbage. They used & abused her. The movie made Terri look like the villain because of her standoffish demeanor. The reason why she was negative Nancy was because Max stole her boyfriend & married him, the family made her pay for everything & her marriage was on the rocks. Kenny wasn’t smart enough to be with Terri anyway. Max was more of his speed. Bird was probably still messing around with Simuel because she didn’t set any boundaries & she went behind her husband’s back to Simuel to get him a job. Here are some fun facts: The late Whitney Houston & Halle Berry were considered for the role of Terri.
@angelnyambio5704
@angelnyambio5704 Жыл бұрын
if I were Bird and I was assaulted by a felon who's the father of my child, I would've definitely gone to Terry to tell her what happened, instead of Maxine. Especially since Maxine clearly didn't care enough about the situation, plus Maxine doesn't really seem like the caring type. Plus, Terri deserves so much better than what her family has given her, especially from her so-called sister Maxine, her terrible excuse of a husband, and her momma. Terri was definitely a victim, and the same with I guess Bird. All those men in the movie were the worst, especially Terri's husband and Bird's felon.
