I am an old white dude, and I have to tell you that I LOVE this song!!! The first time I heard it, I was sitting in a hospital room. My ex-wfie had hust had a hysterectomy because they thought there were precancerous cells in her uterus. She was sleeping post-surgery, but I was too worried to sleep, so I was switching through the tv channels looking for something to watch. I happened on MTV (back in the days when they still played music videos) and I was stunned! Loved the song, and thought the lead singer was beautiful! Awesome song, guys! Thanks ffor the memories!

I count this in my top 5 personal favorite songs of all time. Also if you haven't heard it before check out Funk Flex 60 Minutes of Funk Vol. 2 track 41 he remixed this song, stripped out all the music and just laid down the drum beat over Caron Wheeler's acapella. 1:19 of pure heat.

Didn't know how much you Americans picked up on that English music. There was some great, and really different stuff coming out of UK with the birth of RAP music and then party dance music from the 80s through the 90s. Often much more a Jamaican influence that was common in other Western music.

Guys, they had another hit before those two tunes. It's called FAIR PLAY. If you think back to life had beats. Fair play is better in my view. It wasn't as huge but it burned up the clubs because of the great heavy beat. Please listen to it. There's a video that goes with it. It's my favourite above the other two hits.

Those around when this came out will remember Soul II Soul were disliked by a lot of HipHop heads at the time. They were accused of 'selling out' and taking HipHop beats and watering them down with R&B singing. As The Jungle Brothers said in Doin Our Own Dang...... "From Soul II Soul, on to Loose Ends. A&R men sign groups like them. (Cause that's where the money's at, honey). Yeah, the industry's filled with copycats. R&B mixed with sloppy raps.Tribes like us always open doors. But what for, so you can get yours?" That all changed of course a couple of years later, when mixing R&B with HipHop became the norm.
@AntJay-kc7ps7 ай бұрын
All RNB crossover rap is hated on by Hip Hop purists to this day it’s ironic that people gush over these classics now not realising that this rap RnB fusion and the shiny suit era was seen as selling out
@djlivvy46Ай бұрын
I don’t understand that quote though. Why were they talking about Loose Ends & Soul II Soul when their music didn’t actually include rap as far as I know? RnB is a different genre from hip hop as far as I am concerned, despite the cross fertilisation. If The Jungle Brothers didn’t like RnB (which it seems they did not if they didn’t recognise a classic such as this one), they should have just said that. It’s not like these bands were making horrible music.
@djlivvy46Ай бұрын
@@AntJay-kc7ps- hip hop is not the only form of music people are allowed to like, especially women. No one had shinier suits than Michael and Luther, but they were true artists just the same. The irony is that I also remember people being mad that rappers were using samples and saying that hip hop was not real music for that reason.
