Many of those Black soul singers approach to singing is rooted in gospel. Ray Charles, the originator of soul music, is the one that merged r&b with gospel, to form soul music. Many of the early soul hits, were gospel melodies that switched the lyrics around to fit secular sounds. The intensity, grit, power, spiritual feel is how we praise on Sundays.

I think Patti sang this so good that people are so mesmerized by her voice and miss the amazing lyrics! Time is an ever changing thing A cycle, that knows no end Oh many times, many times, oh Lord Time’s an enemy But sometimes, time is a friend Oh oh Time, brought you, brought you yes, to me Now time is taking you away In time I hope, I hope it won't hurt as much As much as it's hurting me today But I remember Those walks in rain, oooh yeah Those picnics in the park Those lazy Sunday days (Don't take my love life, don't take my love life) Not even time can take these memories from me I guess it would be better if it would But time will let me, go own loving you And I'm content that, yes I am, that it should Sometimes time oooh, oooh, oooh, oooh Sometimes, oh Lord, time, yes Time brought you to me yes Aaaaah Now Time is taking you away Sometimes time's an enemy, Sometimes it's a friend, yeah, yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, yeahow Time, from you, from you, yeah, to me, ooh yeah Time is taking you away...

Labelle consisted of Patti LaBelle, Nona Hendryx, and Sarah Dash. They began recording as The Blue Belles (later Patti LaBelle and the Blue Belles) in the early 1960s with a fourth member, Cindy Birdsong. Cindy jumped ship in 1967 to join a more popular girl group, The Supremes, who would soon be renamed Diana Ross & The Supremes. Patti, Nona and Sarah carried on as a trio. By the early '70s the trio had rechristened themselves "Labelle". Along with a new name came a radical change of image (eventually becoming known for wearing wild space suits, feathers, and studded costumes) and musical style (rock n' roll meets soul). Labelle disbanded in 1976. Patti, Nona and Sarah all went on to have successful solo careers. Labelle reunited in 2005 and released a final studio album in 2008. Sarah Dash passed away in 2021 at the age of 76. "Moonshadow", "Miss Otis Regrets", and "Goin' On A Holiday" are a few of my favorite Labelle recordings.

Oh I'll try Patti's one! As I said in the reaction to Mariahs one, if she had had 6 minutes to do it in, it might have made more sense to me, but i think it was only two and a half minutes long - it just felt rushed and like she hadn't really built to what she was doing. I'm not sure if I either don't like Mariah's one or didn't understand it. Could be either!

Patti Labelle had three stages of her singing career. The first was with Patti Labelle and the blue bells, throughout the 60s. The next was with Labelle in the throughout the 70s (with the same two back up singers from The first group, they just changed the name of the group). So they have been together for a long time before this recording. Nona Hendrix and Sarah Dash were her back up singer that both had solo careers in the 80s. The third and current part of Patti’s career is her solo career, which has been fantastic!

Thank you for reacting to my request. I’m so happy you loved it. Patti has an immaculate vocal technique. She’s so confident in her technique that she can completely let loose an embody the song. Every time she performs she gives it her all. Never the same twice. I’m completely obsessed with her. Especially her performances from the 70s and 80s. Completely mind blowing. Concerning the Aretha comparison, she says that Aretha is her idol.

Patti LaBelle in the 70s led a trio called Labelle. They collaborated with the late, great Laura Nyro (died 1997 age 49) as back up singers in Nyro’s all-covers album-Gonna Take A Miracle-of soul and R&B standards. NYC born Nyro had a short, spectacular career during which she wrote hit songs like: Stoned Soul Picnic, Stoney End, Save the Country, And When I Die, Wedding Bell Blues, He’s A Runner, others that were recorded by artists like The 5th Dimension, Barbara Streisand, Blood/Sweat & Tears, Peter/Paul & Mary, others. She could have made more money and fame but she shunned celebrity culture/lifestyle, turning down many invitations for guest tv appearances. She influenced many artists who idolized her including Elton John. She has a haunting, soulful style of singing. From that Gonna Take A Miracle album were some outstanding hits with Labelle like the album title, The Bells, Walk On By, Jimmy Mack, O-o-h Child, Up On The Roof, other hits. You can view on KZbin her only live TV appearance at the Kraft Music Hall-January 15, 1969 where she sang two of her original hits. Nyro was posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2010, The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012. Check it out, specially Laura Nyro’s music and artistry.

@@bridgethegapreactions she has a shy, reclusive persona and was best known as a songwriter than a performer. As a performer, her cover of Up On The Roof was the only one that made it to the Billboard top 100 hits. Her original songs recorded by other artists were wildly popular and made it to the charts. She has a small devoted fan base of soul, R&B purists. In a way, her artistic persona as a performer is like Bob Dylan’s…gotta either love or hate it but there’s the realization that you’re listening to an artist who is a creative, songwriting genius.

Absolutely. I went through a big Laura Nyro phase in my late 20s - I was obsessed with the album 'Eli and the Thirteenth Confession' and heard a few other albums by her too. I prefer her originals to any of the more famous covers, but she did have a talent for writing such solid songs that anyone could do them

I would never say Patti and Aretha had a tense relationship. If anything the public creates their own narrative as if the relationship was tense and pit their voices against each other as the top female vocal performer. Aretha did ask Patti to perform at her funeral however Patti already had a contractual commitment she couldn't break.

"Lady Marmalade" is Labelle's most well known song, but "Lady M's" 1974 Nightbirds album was their fourth as a group, and they had plenty of unrecognized gems on the first three. This song, "Time," is from their 1971 self-titled debut and it is one of a handful of songs written or co-written by group members, in this case Patti and her husband, Armstead Edwards (they are also co-writers of one of Patti's signature solo songs, "You Are My Friend" from her debut self-titled 1977 album). One thing to know about Patti: ballads are her absolute favorite. From their Bluebelles days through the Labelle period, she found her greatest inspiration and vocal interest in the ballads, but it began to separate her from the other members, especially Nona Hendryx, who was more musically adventurous and less interested in soulful ballads or soulful interpretations of standards like "You'll Never Walk Alone." As their primary songwriter, Nona explored a variety of musical and lyrical content through her Labelle compositions, from socio-political numbers like "Sunday's News" and "(Can I Speak to You Before You Go to) Hollywood" to sexually adventurous cuts like "Touch Me All Over" and "Going Down Makes Me Shiver." Patti went along with the program but she was never as comfortable singing these songs as she was a ballad like "Time." By the way, Labelle was "born" in your neck of the woods. After years of languishing at the bottom of the heap on the chitlin circuit in the 1960s, Patti and company remembered Vicki Wickham, who was producer for Ready, Steady, Go that had befriended them when they performed on the show as the Bluebelles. They contacted her and asked her to manage them. She's the one that brought them over to the UK and totally reinvented their name, their image, and their sound.

Mariah knew, her mentors among others: Patti, Aretha, Steve Wonder... and many more because Mariah is many things of course. But these 3... I think I have heard her praising the most throughout the years. With Patti although unbelievable it is clear her sound is not for everybody. The only thing she lacks is that crossover appeal. It happens a little bit with Spanish songtress Monica Naranjo too. Their voices don´t have that universal beauty despite all the impacting things and talents they have.
