Soul Calibur's music also has a unique sound. Many of the tracks sound like Marches in their percussion. Most other games would only tap into that for a "military" moment (and usually watered down and boring). But Soul Calibur has every flavor of a March, and has a wide range of unexpected melodies on top of that percusion. You hear that blend and immediately think, "Soul Calibur." @Astfgl3 жыл бұрын
I always take that "lack of depth" criticism with a grain of salt. Soul Calibur's gameplay has plenty of depth to it, but it isn't as overly complicated as modern fighting games are. It just means Soul Calibur is more approachable for the casual fighting game fan, whereas a lot of fighting games these days are targeted squarely at die-hard fighting enthusiasts who don't mind spending hours memorizing all the frame data of every move. Personally I don't find that a lot of fun, and it's one of the reasons why I have fallen out of love with the fighting game genre over the years.

I remember seeing Dreamcast games for the first time on a video in Electronics Boutique. My best friend and I at the time were buying games for our PlayStations. When that video came on we were absolutely mesmerized by it. We both believed and argued with the cashier that everything we saw was pure FMV. There was no way in Hell games looked like that on a home console. Back in mid '98 you would be hard pressed to find arcade cabs worthy of that picture. He preordered his Dreamcast right then and there while I did my preordering at Toy's R US (he got the last one, bastard). ;) The day the Dreamcast dropped I had to work a double shift and I missed picking it up. My best friend and now roommate got his however. The very first game I saw running on his Dreamcast was Soul Caliber and I was completely floored. The 6th generation was the greatest leap in graphical fidelity we had ever witnessed before and it stood the test of time for a very longtime. At any rate, that next morning (I didn't even go to bed) I picked up my Dreamcast with Soul Caliber, House of The Dead 2, and Sonic Adventure. While he had NFL2K, Soul Caliber, and I want to say Hydro Thunder. That night we threw a huge house party with both Dreamcasts running at the same time. We had Soul Caliber tournaments running all night long in our livingroom. What a time to be out on your own and a gamer. Too this very day we still throw huge get togethers solely for the love of gaming. Addendum- The 6th generation was the greatest leap in graphical fidelity we had ever witnessed before and it stood the test of time for a very longtime. This leap was so profound that it took three generations of gaming to finally surpass it. For a long time I thought the days of great improvements by leaps and bounds to be largely behind us. Thankfully, that isn't the case, the 9th generation has become a return to form for both Microsoft and Sony. Seeing games running in 4K@60FPS HDR10 w/Ray Tracing on is simply breathing and reminds me of the time I fist laid eyes on the Sega Dreamcast....long may the game industry live.

I even liked the button layout, I liked where the shoulder buttons were and I thought everything else was aligned properly. The things I don’t like though was the fact that it downgraded from an 8 button controller on the Saturn to a 6 button on the Dreamcast (I know basically all fighting games are max 6 buttons but it’s good sometimes to have those extra 2 buttons especially for the capcom fighting games). I also don’t like the shape of the controller I feel like it’s two wide both vertically and horizontally and of course having the wire on the button doesn’t help. Finally the d pad never did it for me, it didn’t have the same motion as segas previous d pad controllers and the buttons themselves are a little rougher than other buttons which can cause finger peeling easily. This and Soul Edge were great with all the extra goodies.

I remember discovering both the Dreamcast and this game at my friend's at the same time. I had no idea what they were. Next thing I remember is playing it with my buddy for hours and having one of the the best gaming time in my life and many laughs (just as much as with games such as Worms and Bomberman). You made another great video.

We had a Soul Calibur fighting tournament at my local Aladdin's Castle arcade. I got 1st place. The prize was a Dreamcast (newly released) and Soul Calibur. One of my most awesome memories.

I remember when I saw this game demonstrated on a TV show before the Dreamcast launch. Just that glimpse was enough to realize what a special game it was. I was amazed; this really was like having an arcade at home. This made me return to consoles after many years. A great game.

Great review. This was the moment when home consoles surpassed the arcades. After this, the death of the arcades was inevitable. So many fond memories of this game. Simply stunning! Still impresses to this day!

Hundreds of hours spent playing this game, both sober and high as a kite. Kilik vs. Mitsurugi became the battle of all battles for my best friend and I. Good times.

I preordered a reserved copy of this game with my Dreamcast reservation, and it did not disappoint. Soul Caliber was the killer app on Dreamcast for me and I played it so much that I think I unlocked the entire game within the first couple weeks of owning it. I even took it to work with me the the first day after the Dreamcast release so everyone could play at lunch.

When you live in a dangerous neighbourhood games like this can be a blessing. Kept us out of trouble during summers in Toronto. We would spend hours on the Dreamcast and hours away from trouble.

Soul Calibur was THE game to own if you were a Dreamcast owner. Late 1999.... we've played it a lot at a classmate's house after homework. What an experience...we've also organized a full tournament with all the classmates. I still remember the first time I saw it: I still can feel the goose bumps I experienced on that afternoon! Then, we talked with all classmates about the console and, in occasion to the birthday of my friend, all of them came at his house to play the game, where each one was waiting for his turn with both eyes shocked! That was a huge moment, short but huge, to be a proud owner of a Sega console...great memories. I'm really in love with the packaging/appearance of the Dreamcast games, very different from the "DVD style" games of the boxes for PS2 and X Box. They have a very collectible feeling for me, I don't know why but that's it.

I remember in the 2001 I was working with Verizon helping them setup their video-on-deman pilot project. This was a small group and in the back of their lab/closet they had this huge CRT tv and they had a dreamcast hooked up. When I used to come over for meetings we would all catch in a few rounds of Soulcalibur. Man, those were the days....

You're absolutely spot-on about the Sega arcade ports - they really short-changed home gamers! Games like Daytona USA were awesome in the arcade, but at home, that limited number of tracks just won't cut it!

Soul calibur was so good back in the day. Its so weird these days and the new mechanics are just dumb... 1-4 were the best. 1 and 2 are tied as my favorites. Thank you for showing soul edge... lots of people dont know about that one! One day ill try it.

The DC port of this game was my first wakeup call that the arcades would be fast disappearing. I had played the arcade version of this game for a couple of months and when the DC launched in the States I suddenly had my own copy of it for $50 and it looked WAY better on top of it all. Just like when I got my hands on the Saturn version of X-Men vs Street Fighter why would I continue to spend money playing it at the arcades when I had the perfect port at home? A little while later Marvel vs Capcom was ported along with SFA3 and that was it for me pretty much. I moved on to Tekken Tag Tournament but even then when the PS2 launched again I didn't have a reason to go out to play it anymore. The arcades pretty much were gone by then. *Single tear rolls down*

I came to find out that the Xmen vs Street Fighter games werent arcade perfect like people thought but it was close enough. People say the Saturn port of Marvel vs Capcom is better than the Dreamcast port though and it seem better even though you couldn't use 4 players for tag. Its dang near impossible to find footage after 2007 but it was numerous on youtube at one point.

@@realamericannegro977 I believe Marvel Superheroes vs Street fighter was much closer to arcade perfect for the Saturn than X-men versus street fighter as Marvel super heroes vs street fighter had practically all the frames of animation and basically no load times plus it added that Japanese capcom guy character (forgot his name). I do remember that there was footage of Marvel vs Capcom for the Saturn also back then and I feel like Capcom made a choice between porting Street fighter zero 3 or that and they chose Street fighter zero 3.
@realamericannegro9773 жыл бұрын
@@stevesteve0521 The game was completed on Saturn it just came out later than Dreamcast port. It's been impossible to find videos since Marvel vs Capcom 3 snd Infinite messes up the algorithm but I know I'll eventually run into. This is like the Mandela Effect at this point.
