The Edge is probably the most under- appreciated guitarist...because he doesn't shred and do long boring solos, he gets dissed so much. I've played for over 20 years, can do all the fancy fast playing, but I always truly appreciate The Edge for the effort he puts into his sound and song structures...one of the greats!

They normally save the by busting videos for bands that they had a hard time getting the tone for on a budget or were older videos done in their previous format/room. This one they got the tone perfectly, there's no need to do a "by busting" episode the way they just did one for ZZ Top.

@@ClaesN1973 Yeah sorry it's a bit hard to describe because I don't know the correct term / word for it. Basically any pick that has a textured grip, like a spotty surface. Edge uses blue Herdim picks last time I checked. There are plenty of lookalike picks available however. I use Dunlop 'Nyflex' picks if I play Edge stuff, those picks are basically identical to the ones Edge uses. Wedgie also makes decent picks for the job

Speaking of affordable shoegaze setups... Anyone know a good fuzz/dirt for open chord rhythym that can stand on it's own without having to layer dirt? I want to get a MBV/Slowdive type of sound by only using 3 pedals. (Including tuner) I've already decided the Digitech Polara would be a good choice for reverb. I want something that gets a "wall of sound" yet holds clarity of the E, B, and G strings. I've heard that the higher strings get drowned out by muffs.

Pling rule one, to get the edge sound, turn the pick upside down. Also should have used a standard strat...edge uses the bridge pick up a lot. But edge plays a lot of 6/8 timing heaps although Adam might be on a 4/4. Lastly glad they used a bass, as Adam Clayton is has a fantastic driving bass. With "with or without you" edge uses the infinite guitar invented by Daniel Lanois, which is now sold as the sustainiac. For streets with no name use 375ms delay. Long story short it's a mathematical equation of the bpm of the song.
@Johnny6666
@Johnny6666 7 жыл бұрын
Could also be an issue as to copyright, as I can't believe Rabea would make such a mess of the 'Streets' and 'Still Haven't Found' riffs unintentionally. Who knows? The Edge's riffs appear simple in terms of the chord changes, but getting the exact drones, mutes, echoes, doubles and percussive aspects to his playing (which often are integral to the riffs) is something else again.

Amazing that the most important effect the edge helps shape his sound isnt even mentioned. The herdim pick for about £1. its not the Vox that gives the bell like tone its the pick with the rough edge side used!
@SeaDrive300

Unfortunately, Sweetwater doesn't carry the Herdim picks. Whaddya think about a Dunlop Max-Grip nylon pick as a substitute? At four U.S. bucks for a dozen, I'll probably give it a shot...

@KeeperOfPoops
@KeeperOfPoops 7 жыл бұрын
they've gotta do a Without bustin version first But i can say for the without bustin version... Jonny uses a telecaster with a built in killswitch, so use either the Squier telecaster Deluxe or Vintage Modified, for amplification the Vox AC15 is a great call, fx is a toughie, but i'd say a Tremolo, Phaser, Envolope filter, Whammy and a volume pedal Ed uses a Johnny Marr jaguar but that's not only someone else's signature guitar but it's over £1000 so a squier jaguar could work well, but if you're focusing on Jonny matt can use the Johnny Marr Jaguar and a Gibson acoustic

Nice one guys, been hoping you'd do this one for ages! :) Just wondering though, why did you not consider the Korg SD3000 pedal? Its the same delay Edge uses and the built in pre amp (which Edge has said he uses all the time even without the delay being on) would probably have saved you having to get the mxr and saved you the budget to use elsewhere. You still sounded great though!

For sticklers, The Edge used two Korg SDD3000 rack units on a mix bus, downstream of the SM57 microphone on the amp. I think I recall Dallas Schoo saying he traveled with six of those (for redundant backups) on the Joshua Tree tour. They were stereo units, so he could have as many as four delays going at once. Not to beat a dead horse, I'm sure there's a detailed rundown on everything and how it was routed, elsewhere on these KZbins, but the thing a lot of folks miss is The Edge's pick, which was a coin of some sort (shilling? sixpence?) which gave a scrape-ey, gritty attack to his notes, adding an important bit of texture, before hitting the delays. There was also a belt-clip preamp, JHS has brought it back as The Clover, and of course Josh Scott has all the details on what the original unit was, who made it, etc. He probably even has the box it came in, but that was what was used to push the amp's front end; you could probably use any clean boost to produce that trademark chime. Because he wasn't delaying a completely clean signal, which delay you use probably doesn't matter all that much, so long as it's stereo. The live sound isn't too difficult to achieve, but in the studio, Daniel Lanois would pull tricks like yanking the dry signal completely out of the mix and leaving just the reverb return on its own and there were TONS of reverbs, delays and subtle overdubs that you'll never miss, live. Final note: Korg made a pedal version of the SDD3000 in the early aughts which does all the delay and modulation on the original, plus a Deluxe Memory Man emulation, reverse and ping-pong delays, filtering in the feedback circuit, multiple modulation waveforms and more, including a very special preamp circuit with input/output configuration switches that allow you to operate the pedal at instrument or line level and overdrive things even further. Originally, it was well south of the Strymon's price, but they've shot up in value on the used market.
