@@vDomMusic Yep. Bono said it: a lot of people criticize him because it sounds simple, so you try to play it. It his his style. Dave spends ages getting a sound. Sorry guys. I love your videos but I think you missed this one. The Edge isn't only about "let's throw in some delay and we'll be fine", like many people think. His tone comes heavily from his effects, that's true, but no less and maybe more - from his special pick and his attack / right hand. You're missing that chymi "glassy" tone he produces, and your tone is too over-drivven. Also - the riffs simply aren't correct. There are tons of videos out there about both aspects I mentioned here. As an Edge fanboy (I admit, I am one) - I think this video does not do a great service to his glorious tone. But generally I love your vids! Rock on.
@markjames71405 жыл бұрын

Completely agreed. He plays a lot less notes than you would think for some of these riffs, relying a lot on the delay (often times with two different delays at different lenghts like dotted 8 with quarter note for example). The way he holds the pick AND the kind of pick makes all the difference. If you do not have a Herdim like he uses, A black Dunlop nylon pick with the "3d" writing on it will do if held reverse of what you would normally do (reverb.com/ca/p/dunlop-44p10-nylon-standard-1-dot-0mm-guitar-picks-12-pack?gclid=CjwKCAjw-ITqBRB7EiwAZ1c5UzK-XPFoWg7ErNn-3yjwntZ61eO3fMCFliGx76IEDU4buDky7IS8VRoCehcQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds&hfid=20997160&merchant_id=101073192&). The letters as well as the wider plastic area of the pick hitting the strings will give you his signature chimey attack. But several of the riffs were just played completely wrong and that really bothered me. You usually do a better job of that. Streets doesn't have so many repeats and the repeats (especially the first) is just as loud as the picked note. Same with Bad which you didn't play here (watch the 185 Live Aid version for a great example of his playing with and off the delay and how little he actually plays (kzbin.info/www/bejne/fqelmIWJiNGJeKM). He also adds dynamics by mixing lightly picked half muted strings licks and more strummed parts (again Streets is a great example : kzbin.info/www/bejne/q3XOc62hdp5_atU). Like Andy Summers (in another style but another guitar player often playing against delays), the playing is economical and and very dynamic in varying intensity and usually pretty lightly picked... except when not which makes that part stand out. Both Edge and Summers play in instrumental trios and need to fill a lot of space and give songs their dynamics. With these two, it's really a lot in the fingers... This one is a miss for me as well.

ES 295 into Framus Dragon heads, but was using Burmans (kinda like vintage Marshalls) back in the day. Normally using a Line 6 delay live. Geordie's sound is mad, he has to roll the volume off the second he stops playing to stop the feedback from screaming out. You can get a decent version of his sound using a hollow body/ semi-hollowbody with a powerful overdrive (Friedman OD is killer) going into some chorus and delay pedals. But it's basically impossible to really imitate his tone.

The original With Or Without You recording didn't use the Fernandes Sustainer he uses now. Back then, composer Michael Brook had invented his Infinite Guitar (it is similar to what Fernandes later marketed). He still uses his in his Tokai Strat on film scores. There were only two others made, Daniel Lanois has one and The Edge has the other. And that was what was used on The Joshua Tree.

Great job guys! That rig sounds amazing. The delay sounds are indeed difficult to dial in. However, what you missed was the quarter note/half note stacked delay tone as heard all over Joshua Tree. You've got that expensive DD500 being used as a basic digital delay instead of a pair of them being used stacked. You couldn't quite get the staccato stutter chop that the Edge is famous for. Also, where is the famous explorer? Really bust the bank and get all the iconic Edge guitars going :) Excellent work on replicating the with or without you keyboard parts as well that was super cool and I now want an EBow really bad! I hate to ask, but since I know you have done this before, perhaps think about another Sound like the Edge by busting the bank in the future when more of the correct gear is in stock and see if you can get even closer?

The edge of KZbin! :OOOO Lately I've been thinking about how damn expensive it is to get anywhere "decent" in guitar world. Not that the cheapest of the cheap aren't cheap and often playable, but like how the without busting episodes always run so close to the £1500 and are often even limited by it, even when not buying expensive gear. And to think that really few have that kind of money until they're playing properly and have a stable job. Of course there's a difference in going in the store and buying everything in one go since usually it's just upgrading this and that part of the rig here and there, gradually making the way to proper equipment.

GUYS! Come on! I can tell you’re not U2 fans, but a little more research is needed here. Yes Edge plays a Strat and has a signature model, but really he’s most famous for playing his Explorer... The only guitar in his rig that has served on the first LP right through to current stuff. The other thing to consider is his white Les Paul Custom that he used on Actung Baby where he uses loads of FX that were such a sonic leap from Joshua Tree era (Mysterious Ways, Even better than the real thing (whammy!), Until the end of the world etc. Your ‘sounds like’ is really, specifically Joshua Tree era and Edges tone is waaaaaay boarder than just that era. Love these shows, love your work maybe you could explore U2’s back catalogue a little further on a future episode. I’ve just realised this post may come over a a total fanboy. Guilty as charged 😂
@olderebelam-o5 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I completely agree. But it's really not the first time they took an artist with such a huge catalogue and just focused on one specific era of theirs. Hell, even the Beatles episode suffered a little bit from that! I think it's really just a matter of time constraints for doing the research involved both in repertoire and gear. And I feel that's also the reason I enjoyed the without busting episode more than this one, where the limitations left them pleasantly surprised and having fun (which arguably makes a difference to the playing, therefore the sound). I may not be the biggest Edge fan, but holy hell, his tone is one of the best I've ever heard, and it really should be approached with respect!
@edpack43905 жыл бұрын
I also agree - but with such a broad catalog it's tough. BUT - this leaves some room for them to "explore" his tone further...and they could even do this with other artists. :-) One of my "practice" songs on youtube is the live version of "Until the End of The World"...and would like to see them "bust the bank" for that rig...and others. At least the amps are consistent...so that helps!

pretty sure, based off the past videos you could put something together in your head. Mexi Strat, Marshall combo, reverb pedal, phase 90, and maybe a tremelo. If you ha the budget you could do the fender reverb/tremelo combo pedal.

I often wonder what the secret sauce in the sound of the various true 90ies speed shredders is. You should do a series, exploring: Tony Macalpine, early stuff Vinnie Moore, early stuff Jason Becker, the lot :) ... Keep up the good work, guys

As Miles Hunt once said ' we all had delay pedals, The Edge never got anything else' :-)

Nice video guys, but I think you could have gone with a dual guitar setup, maybe a strat and an explorer. You could also do this in other sound like episodes, mainly the by busting ones, so you have a more versatile setup( kinda depending on the artist)

Nice episode. I think you got even closer this time to sound like U2. Slipknot by busting is still my biggest request. :-)
