As someone who occasionally makes an attempt at properly playing an acoustic guitar, I have to say that the guitar player in this session does it right. He throws in little lines and flourishes without ever overstepping his bounds or interrupting the subtle sensuality of Isobel and Mark's duet. Kudos.

"The female˝ has a name: Isobell Campbell. You just have to read the title the video to know that, so next time if you call him by his name you can do the same with her. About your tonal complaint: the original song has the same relationship between both voices, and considering that the song was written, produced and arranged by Isobell Campbell (aka "the female") I think she has the right to sing the way she prefers it.

This is a good song, BUT 1) it needs a vocal coach to give it more dynamic, there needs to be highs and lows but still maintain that subdued feel, it's tricky, they need a vocal coach to take this song to the next level. 2) it needs a better sound guy/mixer, at some parts the music should take dominance and at others the vocals should, its tricky to get right, requires upper level expertise. This is a good song, but I got a feeling, if the cover is done right, if its redone by a celebrity, then it's gonna get way more attention than this version, which is unfortunate because it's theirs, it just needs some adjustments. And lyrically, in both parts, they should cut: Is it any wonder Is it any wonder I lay awake all night Is it any wonder Hoping someday soon I see the light Then it would be a shorter song, because right now it's too long, people are "changing the channel". 3mins tops, get people in the mood, cut it off, leave people wanting more. 4 mins, not sexy. 3 mins, sexy.

Thanks god they didn't have a vocal coach, so they didn't have to sing this the way the commercial artists do, with those exercises of absurd virtuosity. The way they mantain it low and subtle is fantastic. And thanks god as no celebrity is covering this! Celebrities just ruin other people songs, making them sound all the same. The funniest thing about your post is how you give orders to people as talented as Isobell Campbell and Mark Lanegan, "they should cut this lyrics", "they should make it shorter", etc. As I wrote in a previous comment: this song was written, produced and arranged by Isobell Campbell, so I don't think she needs artistic guidance or musical direction.
