SOUNDPROOFING MY DEFENDER (update) - Worth it?!

Hello and welcome back to The Doctor’s Garage! In this video I talk about fitting soundproofing my TD5 Land Rover Defender and installing brand new exmoor trim carpeting. Land Rover Defenders (Particularly the TD5 engine) is known for being loud in the cabin especially off road. I stripped out the interior trim and cleaned it down to bare metal. After this I installed silent coat and dodo matting before finishing it with the exmoor trim carpet set. This can be a bit tricky if you have insulation underneath and in this video I talk about where I found it difficult.

First step is to finally get that medical degree and then get done with my specialization in order to save up some money. I reckon I still have 6 to 10 years left. Meanwhile I'm just saving up ideas for my future landy's mods😆 I didn't really consider insulating it until now, I hope that will make a difference, thanks doc

Hello Sir... Greetings from Germany 🇩🇪 Hope everybody is safe and sound... May I make a suggestion..? Get a ORE corner protection for the seat boxes on BOTH sides 👌 So the edges don’t come of or crumble while you getting in the car ... cheap install and HUGE BENEFITS!

Nice job, it’s a pig of a job to do but when you do it right it looks fantastic. I also used silent coat products on two of my Defenders now and it makes such a difference.

Thanks for your comment Gary- Would like to but I don’t know if I could cut the curved roof out... don’t know if my DIY skills have it in them. I did the rear quarter glass- in fact uploading a video of me doing it this weekend

@@thedoctorsgarage it's not to hard to cut them out with a template but I found that don't used the cheap brit part seals as rubber to hard. If you fit the alpines in then you can put a headliner in and would finish the interior off with all the new carpets you have and going to fit.

Looks sweet. I have a bone stock 300tdi that needs a few little mods. I still have the old steel wheels but have boost wheels for the future. What size tires did you go with? And do you need to have a lift kit to run that size?

Hi Liam thank you- appreciate the support. This was 1 pack originally of the 2mm Mat Bulk pack. I think to properly do a defender you would want 3- can never seem to have enough!

Thanks! Yes of course - it’s actually an Exmoor trim one and came in the interior set but looks like you can buy it separate here. Great video, thinking about the carpet option myself. Couple of questions; water in the footwell - do you have any leaks and how are you dealing with water in the footwell with the carpet and sound deadening? Did you have any issues with the Exmoor carpet with the additional sound deadening?

Hi N Noddy- I sorted the footwell leaks before fitting the carpets and deadening- the main area of leak for my was the air vents that open on the bulkhead- I basically keep them tightly shut now and have an extra layer of foam to seal them so they close sealed. Re: the carpets I had a little bit of excess but nothing too bad and it was easy to fit around the sound deadening to be honest - had to make a few more cuts here and there

Heatgun/hairdryer first to warm the glue and a piece of fine string or fishing wire under each letter worked well for me 👌🏻 hope that helps

Great update on the car 👍🏻 I’ve currently just removed my bulkhead and fitted it with the removal bar, think it’s the best mod I’ve done so far as it’s given me more room. Would you consider doing it ?

@@thedoctorsgarage I used the Bearmach removal bar. It wasn’t to bad just took a while with quite a bit of planning. You need to take the sides off in order to bolt the top of the bar into the side plates. But definitely worth it as it seems to have double the room inside the Defender

Hi Stef- it’s a great idea as picking tyres is a nightmare-will so a video soon. I love the Cooper STT pros despite everyone saying they were going to be too noisy!

If you get damp under all that the floor will rot and get smelly.

All that matting is great if your car is 100% leak free, if it isn't you'll end up regretting it..

You’re right- and I’m still not 100% convinced it is as my windscreen seal is dodgy....until it’s sorted it’s garaged - I’ve plugged so many leaks so far!
