Jean Shinoda Bolen, MD, is a Jungian analyst and clinical professor of psychiatry at the University of California, San Francisco. An internationally renowned lecturer and workshop leader, she is author of The Tao of Psychology, Goddesses in Everywoman, Close to the Bone, Like a Tree, and more. She is also a fellow of the American Psychiatric Association (APA) and a past chairperson of the Council of National Affairs of the APA.
In this podcast, Dr. Bolen joins Sounds True founder Tami Simon to reflect on her many years as a writer, teacher, and activist, and how doing our "soul work" becomes the path to self-actualization, connection, and contribution throughout our lives. They also discuss our innate capacity for love and awe; becoming a whole-brain person; speaking up as a key aspect of individuation; gratitude and appreciation; the dandelion effect, or how seeds of beneficial ideas are carried to fertile ground; navigating liminal times; the predicament of "just doing time" with our lives; connecting with loved ones we've lost; becoming more familiar with your "dark side of the moon"; the metaphor of the millionth circle; and more.

Sounds True was founded in 1985 by Tami Simon with a clear mission: to disseminate spiritual wisdom. Since starting out as a project with one woman and her tape recorder, we have grown into a multimedia publishing company with more than 80 employees, a library of more than 1500 titles featuring some of the leading teachers and visionaries of our time, and an ever-expanding family of customers from across the world. In more than three decades of growth, change, and evolution, Sounds True has maintained its focus on its overriding purpose, as summed up in our Mission Statement.

I so like her insight, being the grain of sand including the whole, confirming that we are her to learn and serve, and that we do move on. Love jungian, and love how through her years she has continued to be open minded ❤

Thank you Dr. Bolen for putting this out there because it DID put into words what I am feeling. I recently made an appointment with a therapist to help me figure out what I am missing. Your saying "soul work" is exactly what I think I am missing. It is also what my partner is missing. Long story short, thank you for putting this out there. It definitely touched this lost person.

This is such a wise wise woman. I'm humbled and grateful to have found this podcast. She also reminded me of the late Elizabeth Kübler-Ross, who would not leave this world until she had her last book which was sort of autobiographical done.

My older brother came to visit my mother and I when he past away. Then he would visit me twice a year for 4 years to tell me what was going to happen in my life. He was preparing me for a major life transition. Then later in life I had 5 friends parents visit me after they past away, and asked me to relay messages for them. There is most definitely life after death, from a perspective of energy, no one actually dies. Passing over is just that, a transition from one state to another.

🌿I moved from Marin Cty CA to Helena MT, lived on the Great Divide 10 mi west of town, and met India Supra many times at Feathred Pipe Ranch.. She is the strongest memory of a woman there actually expressing the Divine Feminine.. Your circles and other Divinities have increased our openness and courage to find HER...THANK YOU, Dr Bolen! I have followed your work for over 30 years. I too am an awakened octogenarian! Your talks on Psyche&Eros energized, informed and empowered my work as a Holisitic Health Transpersonal Therapist here in New Mexico. Sending Blessings to you for all that you have done, AND for all that you have YET TO DO! Avanti!
