Man. Being named Alice in a horror series is just a fast track to having a bad time.
@TheCrimsonElite666

The ultimate irony is that Alice is best known for a pair of fairy tale books that are one of the few times where the original fairy tales aren't dark and depressing. I bet Dorothy Gale from Wizard of Oz looks at Alice in bitter emerald envy because the original Wizard of Oz books had horror elements, so you'd expect more horror adaptations of those (at least adaptations beyond Gale Stay Away From Oz and Return to Oz). But strangely, when the Japanese aren't literally demonising her by depicting her as a demon, Alice seems to be a magnet for horror.

Yeah it always made me feel a tad odd that Alice in wonderland/ through the looking glass inspired so much dark or gruesome media when the og books are quite wholesome ( albeit weird and dream like. The og illustrations can at times strike a vague uncanny valley effect. Namely how every figure is so exaggerated and odd compared to Alice's toned down/ down to earth design).

@@strawberrydoll7042 There is a bit of body horror when Alice takes the Eat Me cake and the next illustration is her neck suddenly elongating (and that also happens after she eats part of the mushroom that Caterpillar was on). There's also the fact that she gets trapped inside a tight space at least two times after she grew bigger, which can trigger a bit of claustrophobia. Then we have the Jabberwock, which looks both disturbing and silly, though the poem it appears in is meant to be a giant parody of Anglo-Saxon poetry. Finally there's a bit of violence where the White Queen cuts herself and bleeds before her shawl comes undone and cuts her. While the books are largely light-hearted in tone, especially when compared to other fairy tales, the potential elements for horror are there.
@strawberrydoll7042

@TheCrimsonElite666 thats one of the reasons I suspected other than notoriety that Alice gets at least quite a bit of horror media made out of it. Other then some getting the horror of twisting something childlike and fairly innocent there's also the angle of many aspects of the story being at least somewhat disorienting/ uneasy in feeling ( a lot thanks to the illustrations)

@@TheCrimsonElite666 Oh yes, I still remember the lady who kept a cabinet of interchangeable heads, sort of the Oz version of Bluebeard (and reversed). And while I adored the Glass Cat as a kid, as an adult I've seen way too many glass frogs to think a cat-sized version would be less disturbing.

Hello, little theory time. Egg symbolism always catches me because of how varied the meaning could be. Rebellion, fertility, fragility, all subjects that could be represented through eggs. Though, with the other subjects being touched on, I think the eggs represent some issue Mother has with fertility. The emphasis on her being Mother, not mom, the need to have a daughter even after her original daughter's death, the focus on the extreme feminine expectations of eras past; it all makes me think she had had fertility issues either in her marriage or throughout her life. There is also the very intentional voicing choice of having mother sound more masculine. How that plays in to it or what that could mean is unknown to me, but it is still interesting.

I love that you said this. I can confirm that the egg was an intentional choice because it is a symbol of fertility! I also wanted her to drop the egg on the stairs, and it cracks with the plate the same way that the daughter’s head does. So it also resembles fragility in that sense!

The fact she calls Alice "my little doll" multiple times makes me think she only sees Alice as a girl living in a dollhouse, which is why she imagines her as talking even though she's _dead silent_ and why she seems to be trying to live vicariously through her, just like a child would. This also ties back to what you said about her childhood with her mother, where she wasn't treated too well so she clings onto something that made her feels safe at home, like her dollhouse. Plus, this could also be why people ignore her when her house is burning, since she's done this before for something that didn't happen, but she sees it through her lens as now everything's falling apart the house's structure is coming down. If that makes sense... x

I think the eggs are a really interesting symbol, eggs can often symbolize fragility, motherhood, and change. I also find it interesting how the eggs are sunny side up- very ironic since the whole video is just things getting worse and worse due to the mother’s inability to change or accept that her daughter is dead and her family is broken.

Did you know that Stockholm Syndrome, is technically not a real thing. I say technically because it's not an official psychiatric diagnosis and it's highly controversial among the psychiatric community as there's not nearly enough academic research to confirm or deny its existence. But trauma bonding is a better way to look at it in my opinion rather than Stockholm Syndrome. And the history of how it even originated was because a male psychiatrist foisted it onto a woman because the police and prime minister of Sweden couldn't take accountability for their mistakes, which police fired at innocent hostages and didn't try to calm the situation but instead rather escalated it. And when this was brought to court that's were Stockholm Syndrome came in to play it's part, because they didn't like the fact that the hostages felt safer with their capturers because they tried to protect them from firing shots. Honestly I say look into the case for yourself to learn more information on how it came to be because its interesting

I've been seeing a couple of other comments on the theory related to the eggs, and I wanted to add what I got from the symbolism behind it as well. I do think the theory of eggs being related to the mother's possible infertility could be regarded and the emphasis on her femininity as well. I personally saw a contrast when it came to the scene where she was talking to Heather's mother that connected my thoughts. I saw eggs as being a symbol of fertility as well, but in more of a sense of biological factors. That in a sense, traditionally, a mother sees her own daughter as a part of them, because she was created from her own eggs, and in a way, it strips any kind of impression of love and compassion because you are simply seeing your child as a biological component of you, which could also explain the very 1950s aesthetic, because it relates to a traditional style of love that was often encouraged, or is otherwise known as "tough love" that the child is simply just there because it is your purpose as a woman in a nuclear family/ American dream sense to have a child. In a sense, stripping her daughters identity to being simply biological feels like it is implying her daughter as a reward, that she is a mother, and her purpose as a woman traditionally is to be a mother and a wife. However, she failed to be a wife with her ex husband, so she clings to the identity of having her daughter. It also reminds me of the concept of "a mother is her daughter's first hater" because of a traditional ideal that women will always be in competition, even if it means that it's with their daughters, therefore implying the mother's impression on her daughter to keep her skinny and her makeup preserved, even when she is dead to project her idea of worth onto Alice. That as well as the implication of eggs in a woman being a limited recourse that eventually runs out as the mother ages, it may also be an implication of this withering sense of womanhood/ motherhood, where her purpose is fleeting and temporary, as well as her beauty, and therefore resembling a sense of conditional love that she has for her daughter, which can also be seen in the mother's strictness and punishment towards Alice. The reason why I brought up Heather's mother, is because she has milk in her basket, which feels more symbolic of the connection between an infant and it's mother, because feeding a baby is often seen as a bonding experience. Heather's mother not only refers to Alice's mother as her "mom" which is more endearing than being called mother, but she shows concern for Alice and her well being. Heather's mother in my opinion is more of an example of "motherly love" that shows that she views her purpose as a mother to be compassionate and nurturing, as opposed to Alice's mother viewing motherhood as simply a "biological reward". Alice's mother then makes a comment on the milk being fattening and assumes that Heather must be overweight from her choices, which can imply this idea of "tough love" even further, that most parents see a parent comforting their child for too long or too much as a bad thing because it takes away the sense of respect your child will have for you. That if you are not an authoritarian in the relationship with your child and prove to them that your ability to love them and comfort them is inherently conditional, then your child won't fear you enough to respect you. This could be implied when Alice's mother comments on Heather's possibility of being overweight, that she is inherently spoiled and greedy.

Okay, small theory time based just on what's in this video (I kinda want to see how my thoughts change before and after watching for myself): Eggs are commonly known to represent fertility, so I do believe the mother has fertility problems possibly caused by the cigarettes she's been smoking. Smoking can lead to the life rate of eggs being decreased, and because women only have a limited amount of them, it in turn causes menopause and infertility early if you smoke heavily. It could also be part of why she got so angry when she imagined Alice ask why she's still smoking. It's possible she knows that her infertility was caused in part due to her smoking, and she's increased her smoking as a way to cope with it. However, although it makes her feel better temporarily, it serves as a reminder that she's infertile once she's finished the cigarette. It is probably also why hwr voice sounds a bit more "madculine", too, but if we take it symbolically her voice could represent a sort of "flaw" in her femininity that she percieves due to infertility and her voice itself. The obsession with the 1950s style could be because when most people think of a "housewife", they imagine the 1950s style shirt dress, hairstyle, and the like because it's a bit of a stereotype. It's like looking back to the past and seeing the photos of retro housewives smiling with their husbands and children can help idealize the idea, to tthe point where there's even that whole "trad wife" trend going about because of it. So, Mother could very well be in a similar scenario. She's idealized the idea of living a traditional role of a housewife, caring for her children and husband, and filling the "role" of a woman. She is obsessed with femininity, so it'd only make sense for her to latch onto the retro idea that a woman should be a housewife because in today's age many countries have moved past such ideals and into a world where femininity doesn't have such a strict and stable guidline. The past gives her a goal to reach towards, so she goes with that, or it might've been pressed into her head by her own mother, who might've been raised in the days where the peak of femininity WAS being a housewife. As for the obsession with food (which borders on an ED, if not being one) I feel like it's a mix of that idea of femininity and her husband possibly cheating. I mainly think this because she seems obsessed with the idea of the 1950s specifically, unless I'm wrong and there's some 60s in there. During the 50s, the idea of an hourglass shape was in, with articles advertising for women to actually gain weight to achieve that. However, if there's some 60s, the thin and petite body type was in, so losing immense amounts of weight was in then. Her mentioning another woman does make it seem more plausible that her obsession with weight started with her husband cheating on her, though. Or maybe he just found another woman after the divorce, but she hadn't gotten over him due to her ideal family dynamic including a father, so she saw it as such? She's already shown she's prone to delusions, so that might be another option.

one thing i found interesting is, I think, the reason Mother clings so much to being a mother is because thats all she has. sure she has a house, but we never see her have a job or anything like that, and even then, she hardly buys enough food, not even healthy foods like fruits or veggies, we only see eggs and pees. she was a house wife and a mother, her husband left her, problably withou any money (and this is without considering the divorces slip assests or stuff like that), so all she has is BEING mother and i think, to her, to lose Alice (or pheobe) would be like accepting that she was truly lost herself and doest know who she is withou that. and because of this and possibly her childhood, she has these moments of clarity and then goes back to being bitter and abusive

Even though her daughter has been dead for months, she couldn’t take responsibility for her actions and had to blame it on something else. That something else being the fire. This also ties in with the beginning where she blames Alice for not being able to sit still, further showcasing her inability to take accountability. Getting some hard core R/raisedbynarcissists here, with a hint of Criminal Minds. Beautiful work by the original creator (whom I have subbed to) and I'm excited to get another Soupy video this week.

The mother reminds me of a covert narcissist, I can relate because I was abused by a so called mother figure in a covert way. .

I'm curious if her comment about "losing a child" and all the eggs implies that maybe she took Alice because she lost a pregnancy

Mother 🤝 Miss Censordoll from Moral Orel ⬇️ Having a creepy obsession with eggs and motherhood bc they had something involving fertility and motherhood taken away from them against their will (Mother's original daughter and Miss Censordoll's ovaries)

Omg this is so creepy cause I had a dream kinda similar as in the kid died but the parent pretended nothing happened, but basically the father drowned his kids / overdosed them after his wife / their mom passed away from a car crash and he couldn’t handle them not growing up w/ a mom (and if i remember he was gonna kms too but chickened out) but it’s crazy cause in my dream it was a show called “father” instead of “mother” idk if this is stupid to all say I just had to put it out their cause it was soooo trippy while watching this haha

This landed on my feed, and made me realize I hadn't seen the original, so popped over to @productt's channel. And learned two things. First, that it's very clever, using bits and pieces of in-game assets to create new content, and second, it is BEYOND disturbing what adjusting those in-game assets can do in the right--or wrong--hands. Full marks to @productt for making something creepily plausible that still hits just the right amount of uncanny valley.

I love this video and I love this film now because of you, but- I watched the film before watching this video because I wanted to see the film first before watching this and, we both watched the films backwards. The creator also posted the videos backwards but the pinned comment of Alice says that Mother is the part 2. Hopefully maybe Donna will be the look into Mother’s trauma.

12:00 i once fell down 4 flights of stairs that did in fact have landings. the first one i tripped again, the second time i tumbled while trying to get up, and i have no idea what happened on the third landing cause i smacked my head pretty good. (i think i tried to tuck into a ball and just flat out rolled down the next flight.) it hurt a lot.
