It's about the women. Southern women are more gentle natured. They are more passive towards advances from men. Midwestern women are more bold and assertive. They act aggressively against obvious advances, thus you have to be more subtle towards them. When I was single, I lived in both the Midwest and in the south, years in each. And southern girls are a LOT easier to talk to.

The real truth is that the Southern man is carelessly fearless sometimes, which results in most of us dying young. So the only way we've managed to continue to exist is to reproduce younger. The only way to do that is to be more direct with women, and have kids in your teens and early 20s, because in your late 20s, you'll probably take a bet that would hurt your pride if you didn't take it, and you'll die proving the neigh-sayers right.

It's not about "fear". Southern men have bought into the idea of Southern charm. They assume they are charming, they work on their charm, etc so have the confidence to be direct. Midwestern men are polite. They don't pursue, they hover, and look for chances to be helpful. They aren't sensitive to rejection, nor scared, really. If you think you are scaring them off, what really happened is they didn't mean to be rude, and you acted like they had been, so they stopped.

Natural born Texan here, but I'm having a bit of an identity crisis now, at the age of 33. Was I supposed to be born in the Midwest? 😅 The polite to a fault thing has been my go to...well, forever. I never like being too direct and was always cautious to not offend or cross any lines. Maybe just because I was raised by a single mom who would punch my teeth in if I did something overly insensitive or rude towards any group, but especially women. My mom is 5'3", but she was a death row correctional officer for a decade while my brothers and I were growing up; once we started outgrowing her before puberty, she had to get increasingly more aggressive to maintain control. If there wasn't anything nearby to grab, she'd throw fists. Seemed harsh at the time, but I get it now, and am grateful for it.

Midwestern women, in my experience, more likely to be put off by men who are very direct, UNLESS they have a southern accent. Then you become more mysterious and attractive to them. Midwestern women are very much like deer as well and seem quick to kill the conversation with men that are direct because it comes off as a little desperate, them, I think. You gotta treat em like cats. You gotta sorta get their attention and then back off a bit and let them come to you. That's my experience as a midwestern man, anyways.
