Cool! Jack Jones, the singer, performed with John Farnham's band for quite awhile - and coincidentally sounds similar enough to him that most of my friends and I think of him as a "baby Farnsey"

There was a commercial on the tv back in the 90’s with jack Jones singing (not on screen) and I used to think it was John Farnham 🤣 can’t remember the ad though 🤦🏼‍♀️ (not the Qantas ad though as he’s seen in that one)

They had a song 'Hold Me In Your Arms', I think it may have been their first single, and everyone thought it was John Farnham. No one can be John of course, but this guy was about as close as I've ever heard, even John thought so. I forgot about this song, great reaction.

Irwin Thomas (aka Jack Jones) the lead vocalist here , was a member of Farnsy's band for a spell... John often referred to him as his 'son'... their voices were very similar and Irwin is still killing it playing gigs today. Southern Sons was a fantastic band - the guitarist Phil Buckle also played in Farnham's band and co wrote a heap of his songs.... talented bunch for sure...

Jack Jones was discovered by John Farnham and he took the band under his wings as his support act on at least one of his tours. As others have said, Jack then played guitar in John's band for a bit (although Brett Garsed was his main guitarist- he's the Rambo look-alike).

Jack was not discovered by John Farnham. He played in a Van Halen cover band in Melbourne called Hans Valen, with Southern Sons drummer Virgil Donatti. It was Virgil's suggestion to bring Jack Jones into THE STATE as they were then known, and on doing so renamed the band to Southern Sons. The rest as they say, is History.

Dude, you have yet to put the pieces together! The singer here is Jack Jones (real name Irwin Thomas), amazing singer, and an even more amazing guitarist. Jack Jones and Michael Paynter whom you have also reviewed, both say JOHN FARNHAM is their singing idol/God etc. They both sound very similar to John Farnham, all three are incredible singers.

My number 1 favourite song by southern sons would have to be Always and ever. Other favourites are: Hold me in your arms, You were there, Heart in danger. Not only was Jack Jones at one point, apart of Australian singer John farnham's band as lead vocalist and lead guitarist, but he also performed with another extremely talented Australian singer Rick Price

Jack Jones is a brilliant singer and not unlike John Farnham. I remember he used to do spoofs of John singing on TV and I believe the closest sounding to John that I have heard. Hold me in your arms brings out his voice so well. This band is so underestimated but truly impressive.

They were actually a band called “The State” prior to being Southern Sons, and Phil Buckle, the guitarist was their singer, but didn’t want to be a front man. At their audition for singers when they were forming the band, Jack Jones, aka Irwin Thomas, showed up as a 14 year old. Obviously he was too young, but had him join at 19, after The State had already had two ep’s (I believe). The band broke up after two albums as the rest of the band really wanted nothing to do with the pop world they were in and were happy writing and being session musicians. Virgil Donati , the drummer, is one of the world’s most renowned drummers still, Phil co-wrote a lot of songs with John Farnham, and Jack has gone on to still perform solo today.

Southern Sons had three albums actually, ZONE was their third and it went mostly unnoticed as the band had split by the time of it's release. It is however an excellent album with a few killer tunes, including one where they are joined by Colin Hay from Men At Work. Worth checking out if you can find a copy.

I was wondering how long it would take you to discover them. Lots more brilliant songs by them to check out. Lots of people say Jack Jones (Irwin Thomas) sounds just like John Farnham and they can’t tell the difference. I’ve always been able to tell the difference immediately, but I do understand why they say that. There are similarities for sure. I think a factor in that opinion becoming so widespread was that Irwin impersonated John on a comedy track called 5 in a row by D Generation, and he did a pretty damn good job of it. There’s a video of it on KZbin if you want to check it out. I just watched it and I still know all of the words which is a bit scary 😂😂
