Thanks again for making a great instructional video. I'm a life long stream, river, and lake fisherman. I recently retired in Baja and bought myself a little Mako 17' Center console . I'm just learning about off-shore fishing and love your videos. Lures, knots, etc. You're my go to instructor.

Tks for the tips had be trolling at 4 miles it is very rarely to catch a fish 😅 .
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching and leaving a great comment of value. I always think speed counts when trolling. You really want the fish to chase you down, you are enticing the impulse to feed, which is a primal instinct for fish. Take that speed up a little bit and you should be fine. Good luck and be safe out there :)

Hi Heath, I went sailing in Greece last year with my buddy Martin, who owns a sailing yacht. I took my fishing gear with me and dropped my artificial lures all day for a week in the saronic gulf. You’ll find all kind of species there. I also sometimes put on Water Wolf Underwater Cams where I could see some Mahi, Dorados and even a Marlin chasing my baits but only chasing and watching it, never got a bite. SPEED: Problem is we have a very constant speed of 5 knots during sailing, sometimes 4-4.5. so actually a bit too slow for that typically high speed trolling of 6-9 knots with artificial lures, that you are describing. On the other hand I guess its way too fast for live baits. Can you tell me WHAT KIND OF LURES I should use to catch any fish during the next sailing trip? Maybe a combination of artificial one and live bait (pitch baits?), because we’re too slow to trigger a reflection bite? BIG THANKS!! Phil

Thanks a million for watching and asking a great question. So, sometimes fish don't bite. However, if you can see them and they are examining the bait, then yes speed is a factor. One, thing you can do to avert this, is put either a strip bait, like a bonito strip, or a fresh ballyhoo behind your lure... It'll add some flavor and scent, and hopefully entice the fish to feed. Also, don't use any wire leader, and possibly make you leader longer to space your connecting hardware away from the lure. Thanks again. Wish you the best of luck in your journey's. Tight lines & take care ;)

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Hi Heath, great hint with the bonito strip behind the lure! I got one more question - I would also like to try to troll an entire (dead) mullet without an artificial lure in front of it. I would add some weight (sinker) in front of the mouth of the mullet to make it swim like a lure while trolling . Will it last if we're trolling with 4-5 knots or will the mullet "wash out" and fall of quickly? Maybe the mullet will stay "more water resistant" if I brine (put them in salt and leave them in the fridge/freezer over night) the mullet before I troll them? Thanks again! Phil

@@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing Yeah it looks like a good time. I have not been down to the keys since before Hurricane Andrew my grandmother lost her home in Homestead to the storm, we use to go to the keys all the time prior to the storm. My parents and grandmother now live up in Melbourne (Brevard County) so I spend a lot of time there and fish the lagoon and offshore from Canaveral down to Ft. Pierce. Please let me know if you are going to make it down for the flea market I would like to meet up with you.

Hi Heath the other day I went trolling for wahoo using but didnt had any success just a Cuda. I trolled a shotgun ballyhoo with chugger and a pair ballyhoo with ilander skirts with 32 and 24 oz inline weight at speeds of 6 to 11mph at the edge with depths of 600 to 90ft. did I did something wrong or there are days that they won't bite? pd, wahoo are being caught on the previous days by people in the marina.
@SouthFloridaSaltwaterFishing3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching, sharing your story, and asking a great question. Wahoo can be tricky. You're not doing anything wrong. Personally I wouldn't use ballyhoo and I would troll just the lures at about 14 knots... Don't go any shallower than 150 ft... That's where the barracuda will start hunting. Persistence is the name of the game. Hunting down a wahoo, lots of times you go home with nothing. Just keep at it... This is the time of year to fish for them. Get an early start before the sun comes up. Hope this helps. Good luck & be safe out there. Tight lines & take care ;)
