As Southport grieved in shock following the brutal murders of Bebe King, six, Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, and nine-year-old Alice Dasilva Aguiar, misinformation about the alleged killer's identity flourished online.
Far-right rioters took to the streets shouting "we want our country back" and throwing bricks at a local mosque - provoked, it seems, by false statements on social media claiming the killer was a small boats migrant with a Muslim-sounding name.
Now the judge in the trial of the 17 year old suspect has named the boy as Axel Rudakubana, in an attempt to quell unrest.
Hannah Barnes and Rachel Cunliffe discuss the tragedy and the "disgusting" riots that followed - including the role of social media.

In Leeds the police ran away. In London.Southport, they immediately attacked with dogs and riot shields and made the situation worse. In Leeds, the council immediately gave in to demands to return the abused child to their family as a response to the riot, essentially rewarding the behaviour. In London/Southport, the government simply calls them "thugs" and wants to declare them as terrorists instead of considering why people are angry.

I find it a little strange that the clampdown that our PM wants to talk about is on people throwing stones. If the police released more information the general public wouldn't jump to conclusions. The Manchester airport incident is a prime example. It took the police a number of days to release the video of the police officers being attacked. Prior to that all the public witnessed was the video of one officer kicking someone in the face. This is why I make it a point to greet muslims with a smile and hello if we make eye contact; I want them to know that not everyone is a racist and I want them to feel comfortable and to feel this is their home too. My parents emigrated from central Europe in 1954 and 1964. Both came here to 🇺🇲 aged 20 and 22. I was born here. Yet by some they (and to some extent, myself) are still treated as outsiders by some, even though we don't look or dress any differently than the majority around us. The rumor was completely false , but that doesn't matter - it played into people's prejudices enough to get an angry mob going. Turns out the murderer was a Welsh-born Christian, but police had been reluctant to reveal his identity because he is a minor.
