To everyone who had never heard of this war, just remember that this campaign was mainly the reason why the Korean peninsula got divided into North and South, and remains so to this day. It was also probably payback for the Russo-Japanese War decades earlier. Remember that the Soviet Union, and by extension, Russia - is *not* merely a European country (like France or Germany), but a huge Eurasian landmass of an Empire that needed to protect itself on whatever front it had to.

Ryan lex Do you even know where Russia is? It's not just some really big Scandinavian country... It's a unique geographic entity in it's own class. Vladivostok is right across from Japan, and Volgograd is not far from Iran.

Sure but the vast majority of Russia's population is in the European part of Russia, the Asian part is sparsely populated.

Dmitry Volkov No, completely different cases. Because with Western European empires, all lands they had outside of their own cores were colonies, and not integral parts of their countries. Russia and its prior imperial entities is different and "special", because Vladivostok, Astrakhan, and Tashkent were just as genuinely part of "Russia" as St.Petersburg was. .
@Suite_annamite
@Suite_annamite 8 жыл бұрын
Dmitry Volkov I live in Canada, and that's still different because the natives in Canada and Australia never had their own organised political entities, so Canada being an "extension" of the UK may be "artificial", but not inaccurate. The Americas, be it Canada or Chile, were creations of European imperialism, and did not exist of genuine places beforehand, like Africa and Asia. ie. It is natural for a person of British descent to conquer and found a place like Canada, but "unnatural" for them to be a in place like India, which was already a thing and not simply a western invention.

The attack was payback for the Japanese aggression against the USSR in the 1930s, most notably their attack on Soviet forces in Mongolia in 1939. The battle of Nomonhan. According to several historians, this was the most important battle of WW2 in the long run, because they Japanese were left so impressed with the Soviet army they refused to join the Nazi invasion in 1941, which most probably would have brought the USSR to its knees. Instead the Japanese decided to attack South-East Asia for oil and other raw materials, and bombed Pearl Harbo. This brought the US into the war, not just against Japan but also against Germany. The battle of Nomonhan was incredibly important and deserves much more attention.

+David Harrison Actually the Japanese used horses to invade China and elsewhere. My favorite part of their cavalry was their bicycle troops. They really had bicycle cavalry! Anyways, a lot of colonial troops all around the world still used cavalry in WWII. Even the US had to reform its cavalry into armor in 1943, otherwise armor and cav were different until then.

Zhukov is pronounced more like "Jukov" instead of "Zukov" in Russian. I'm not sure though, but I'm Chinese and our Pinyin spelling of Chinese names are pronounced that way, and I think the design of Pinyin might be somewhat influenced by Russian. You've messed up quite a lot of them in other videos by pronouncing "zhan" as "zan" and such....whenever you see a combination of "zh" in Chinese names, it's pronounced like a J in Janurary, the H is not silent. I don't blame you though, I've spent several years in US for college and everyone make that mistake....it's natural for a native English speaker. BTW really love your videos :)

Actually, the Chinese "zh" sound that you're referring to it's represented in the IPA as /tʂ/ and its Russian analogous would be something more like /ʒ/ Basically, Mandarin "ch" and Russian "j"

@Phrenotopia
@Phrenotopia 8 жыл бұрын
+BenkethePirate Interesting! I had no idea it would even have been that attractive... It sounds like the Japanese made the wrong bet. But perhaps the difference was that there was too little infrastructure in Far Eastern Siberia for quickly extracting these resources, whereas the Western Pacific were both more developed and gave the Japanese control over trade routes. Still, Siberia would have been more attractive in the long run. What do you think?
@BountyFlamor
@BountyFlamor 8 жыл бұрын
+BenkethePirate the Japanese were preoccupied with China already at that time. In fact, they drew men and materiel away from the Kwantung Army in Manchuria after Hitler had invaded the Soviet Union so the Japanese could be reassured that there would be no Soviet invasion of Manchuria anytime soon.
@Phrenotopia
@Phrenotopia 8 жыл бұрын
***** I found below interesting link... Apparantly, the Japanese did not have enough manpower and oil (because of the embargo) to conquer Siberia. Also the lack of infrastructure made it very hard to penetrate: www.quora.com/If-Japan-had-attacked-the-USSR-in-1941-instead-of-the-United-States-at-Pearl-Harbor-would-the-USSR-have-been-defeated

Japanese ground forces were poorly equiped, they had terrible tanks and armored vehicles (with thin armor and none of their guns could penetrate soviet armor) and used ineffective tactics, the Soviets would of quickly beaten them without any real effort. During that period most of the Japanese resources were in the Navy and air force.

Yet the Soviets did not bomb peaceful cities for no reason whatsoever. The only reason Hiroshima and Nagasaki were bombed was to scare USSR, but it's impossible to imagine how can one even think about commiting such an atrocity. Say what you want, but Stalin would've never done that. He even prohibited artillery strikes on many European cities, such as Vienne, just to preserve architecture and history.

It's also interesting to know that the reason why the soviet successfully defeated the japanese offense was because a german comunist who was undercover in Japan have been able to make one of his allies get the map of the japanese attack, he passed it to the Soviets and thanks to that intel the soviet destroyed the japanese, the soviet and british intelligence have been so crucial for the winning of the war

@BountyFlamor
@BountyFlamor 8 жыл бұрын
Jabzy the one you drew looks like a Type 3 Chi-Nu. As I said, the Japanese only built this kind of 'large' tank like the one you drew in the latter stages of the war and were kept as a reserve for an Allied invasion of the mainlands or never got past the prototype phase. in all their campaigns during the war, like the one in China, the Japanese only fielded light tanks or even tankettes, i.e. hardly more than armoured cars on tracks. at Khalkin Gol, the Japanese fielded these tanks: Lt. Gen. Yasuoka Masaomi, IJA, Commanding Officer, 1st Tank Corps[29] 3rd Tank Regiment[30] Type 89 I-Go medium tanks - 26 Type 97 Chi-Ha medium tanks - 4 Type 94 tankettes - 7 Type 97 Te-Ke tankettes - 4 4th Tank Regiment[31] Type 95 Ha-Go light tanks - 35 Type 89 I-Go medium tanks - 8 Type 94 tankettes - 3 some extra fact: this was the first major engagement in which the Japanese fielded tanks in the first place. the 1st Tank Corps was the first of its kind, the IJA's pride and joy, and they had to watch it becoming totally obliterated by the Soviets. after this lesson they acknowledged that their tanks were inferior but did not conclude to upgrade them but instead that they lacked fighting spirit.

You didn't mention the speculation that the reason that the Americans dropped the Atom Bombs so quickly - as opposed to giving the Japanese more time to come around to the idea of surrender - was because they were afraid that the Soviets would gain more influence in the region if they participated more in the war against Japan.

I kinda wish Japan were able to retain majority of the land they took in China, mainly for one reason: Would that land have been governed by Japan, we would have most likely seen only 1/3 of the current global pollution output we see in our world today.
