Space Engineers - Leak Finder General (Hard Survival)

We're on a quest for airtightness but we have a leak to find and plug up. You'll never guess where it was!
It's about time we got our Space Engineers survival base airtight so we can properly shelter from storms and conserve energy. The only problem is, we didn't install an air leak finder mod yet. Will traditional leak finding methods work?
I have Permadeath turned on, Jet pack and Auto Heal turned off, and no 3rd person view. We're using daily needs survival kit...on Pertam, it's super dark, and the risk of failure is very high. Join me on the pain train.

I know! I had no idea that the screens were leaky. Wouldn’t have occurred to me.

That was painful , I’m sure it was a lot of insane hrs on that one wow sorry for your pain. LCD screens well we won’t make that mistake again

I don't know if I'd call it "cheaty" to use the air leak scanner. Airtightness is such an important part of the game, and by default it doesn't give you any particular way to know if a block is airtight or not other than t&e and the use of logic which, in the case of LCDs, doesn't make a huge amount of sense, since one of them IS actually airtight, and the light panel is airtight on its backside, so why wouldn't that work? Anyways, good show finding it, and you're 100% correct; I was shouting at you that you needed a vent on the outside.

Great way to look at it! I definitely wouldn’t have found the leak in a tolerable time without the scanner. Haha the vent thing was kinda obvious. Doh!

You could probably inset the hatch door as part of wall

Would still need to protrude as the airlock is 1.5-2 blocks thick and the wall to the grass side is a half block at that point. May be able to change that soon as part of a recent addition to the build…. Maybe

I was talking at my screen that the pipework holding the turrets was the leaky box type. Then I was saying that Keen should add airtight through, angled, T-Junction and cross pipeworks (boxed). My dog is utterly confused. haha. I wouldn't call the airleak test 'cheaty' - its the same as walking around your home with a square of toilet paper, checking for drafts around windows and doors lol. It does look 'cheap' though. If 'smoke' could be added to the spray gun, it would 'look' better. So it would stay as a spray effect cloud for 5 seconds if no leaky or moves towards the leak if one exists, for 5 seconds. It would have a better 'feel' about it, walking around, spraying a cloud, following the cloud, spraying some more, repeat - until the leak was found. Sod coding that though, so leak test for the win. I don't see the difference between the automatic component build manager and the leak test, in terms of 'cheaty'. Superb episode as always, one potato is better than no potato chap 👍

Haha very good points! I like the smoke idea so I’m just going to tell myself the leak scanner is a low effort proxy for that. 😁 Tbh there is a lot I would have done differently if I’d decided on pressurising the base early on… like placing a regular 6 way conveyor or cargo container in place of the turret T junctions, I’d also have placed an additional straight conveyor to space the turret away from the wall to avoid the build limitations…. Might still do that later.

@@Psy-Prime Yeah, a single straight to 'poke' the turret out further would have been my choice as the collision area is massive for turrets, compared to the visuals. I normally end up with a sloped 3x3 'mount' for turrets, looks huge but allows airtight building under and around it - with a sorter or container in the middle. It is a little frustrating 'simple' airtight bulkhead fittings do not exist in the base game for pipework, meaning you have the extra calculations for 6-way blocks for every bulkhead pass through. I guess the full vent blocks reduce the 'waste' by one and in reality, for single player, the 'hit' would be hard to notice. I have no idea why it sticks in my noggin, it is really a non-factor.

Why didn't you add a 2nd row of small cargo containers in the back? Samw with under the turrets. No leaky conveyors and ammo storage for if pipe network is disconnected.

That’s not a bad idea for the long term. I’m keeping to what’s necessary for now and taking no risks while I’m not in the most flexible of situations. Making changes involves risk, and I wasn’t exactly abundant in materials when the framework was set out. There will be plenty of room to expand later if needed.
