A rare episode of Captain Video from 1949.
We have hundreds of vintage tv commercials from the 1940's 1950's 1960's and 1970's. These old classic commercials are from the golden age of television and should be preserved for all time. / misterselfhelp

As a young Kid I remember a massive Blooper on the show. Broadcast live, there was no way to correct mistakes. In one episode a head on view of a console in a spaceship with Capt Video and one of the rangers seated at it, you heard "Look out" and both actors dived for the floor. After about 30 seconds of seeing a prop only on the screen a Flash appeared in front of the console, representing an explosion. Shortly after the two actors got back on their chairs and spoke their lines.

I was 6 years old in 1949 when this aired, and I watched it on our new DuMont tv set, I really enjoyed it as well as other tv shows like Flash Gorden with Buster Crabbe! It seemed to be a more secure world then with people more in tune with each other. It was a magical time for me with a new television in our home. People today have lost something.

1949 was a horrible time period for a lot of people sadly not everyone felt secure.

There's literally a PSA about 21 min in reminding people to not discriminate based on race or religion. They needed to make that announcement because of the horrific discrimination at the time. The world wasn't great, you were just 6. This aired 4 years after the atom bombs were dropped, and the Nazi holocaust ended. It aired just a few years before the US would brutalize the Korean peninsula, and shortly after that ravage Vietnam. This show took place during an age of segregation and lynching. This was the age of McCarthyism. It was a brutal, cruel time. But you were 6. (Also, it's kinda funny to think that people today are all up in arms about "politicizing tv/movies" and the "wokes" when they literally had announcements like this in 1949).

If you saw Captain Video in 1949 your family was one of the first in the neighborhood to have a tv.

It probably means your family lived in New York. About 90% of the TV audience in the US in 1949 was in New York City. Most of the rest was in Philadelphia, Washington, Schenectady (GE's headquarters, so early with a TV station), Pittsburgh (headquarters of Westinghouse) or Chicago.

I watched this show from my familys 1st TV set, " Dumont" brand on the back it had a socket labeled for color adapter I learned later that it was a mechanical affair that was impractical enough, never to be implemented. Watched this from Monkey Wrench road with an RFD address Greensburg Pennsylvania.Station was KDKA out of Pittsburgh

I watched this show from 1950, when my family got their first t.v. set! Younger u-tube watchers might not know that Jackie Gleason started on the DuMont Network, first with "The Life of Riley" for one season & then the "Cavalcade of Stars" or "the Jackie Gleason Show" with "The Honeymooners" as a skit! That's probably why Ed Norton mentioned ! P.s. As a 4 year old in 1950, I appeared on one show, shot live, of 'The Buster Crabbe Show' (network unknown) where he interviewed three boys & then showed on of his earlier Cowboy movies! It was great fun & I still remember it!)

The Star Trek of its day. Perhaps Roddenberry got his idea of a United Federation of Planets from Captain Video.

Unlikely. Roddenberry's greatest inspirations were the sci fi comics and pulps he read in his youth. The closest filmed precursor to Trek that I've ever seen is the classic Forbidden Planet which has a crew similar to Kirk's and even the plotline would be at home in classic Trek. Series like this were considered "juvenile sci-fi" and it's unlikely Rodenberry would've given this more than a glance - if he ever saw it at all.

Captain Video started off screening western movie segments, edited action sequences. The captain was more of a host until his own storylines grew. The western in this episode is Range Warfare from 1934, I think.

They did the same thing on Howdy Doody, where they'd cut away to an old movie for about five minutes. They did it to save money. It was five or ten fewer minutes they didn't have to put money into the show.

DuMont was a low-budget network, and the old movies were used to pad out the time when they didn't have enough of a plot

I, Edward Norton, Ranger Third Class in the Captain Video Ranger Academy, do solemnly pledge to obey my mommy and daddy, to be kind to dumb animals and old ladies in and out of space, not to tease my little brothers and sisters and to brush my teeth twice a day and drink milk after every meal!

Ok. But this little "ranger" wanted to suck his big fat you-know-what. And... after having sent in over two hundred boxtops from some god-damn shit-ass cereal, all's I got... was a message from Hoody Duty to come and sit in the fucking Peanut Gallery. No wonder, I'm so fucked up. How are you dear? And..... I don't really give a shit how you are. I own Silver. Ever day. And, thank God. I'm rich. Blessings.

I was 11 years old and now I can't believe I watched and enjoyed this garbage. It's not like I was a stupid kid. I was an enthusiastic reader of books like The Hardy Boys, Bomba the Jungle Boy, Black Beauty, Call of the Wild, etc., and my grades were top notch (except for the D in "conduct"). It must have been the novelty of moving pictures in one's living room.

At 19:57 I get the feeling that Dr. Pawley really means it. He ain't fooling around. I love the way the Western Special Agent takes care of the bad guys at around 22:00. I wonder what movie that was. I'd like to see the whole thing. The Video Ranger (Don Hastings) is still around as of 2022. He's the brother of Bob Hastings, Elroy Carpenter from McHale's Navy and Archie Andrews from radio days.

in 2020, it's better known for the Honeymooners than for its own existence. However, yes it was a real series and was one of the only hits for the Dumont network, the long forgotten 4th network.
