When I first heard the news that Steve was playable, I thought people were playing with me or that he was a Mii Costume in the same vein as Sans and Cuphead, both of whom were over-hyped and overshadowed actual playable characters. I was surprised that he was actually his own fighter.

A little history behind the anime characters in SSF2: They're a holdover from when it was just a tiny personal project like the other fan games here. It's been in development for 12 years and counting at this point, and Ichigo was one of the first four characters programmed in the very first playable demo, which was released to the public on Christmas 2007. Yup; a fangame that's still being updated today predates Brawl's release. (The other three characters in the first demo were Mario, Kirby, and Lloyd; all of which played VERY different way back then.) More anime characters *were* planned at the start, but the roster plans were completely revamped in 2010* and most of them were axed. Goku and Naruto had already been programmed by that point, though, so like Ichigo, it wouldn't have been fair to people who mained them to remove them. The only anime character that wasn't planned at the very beginning and started being designed later in the game's life was Luffy, who was the single most requested character in the fandom by a factor of 10. To be fair, SSF2 doesn't have the ghost mechanic that's pretty unique to the 3DS, where each screen shows whether the ghosts are vulnerable to that player. Instead, the four sides of the stage are warp zones to the other sides.

In Super Smash Flash 2, the heroes of all of the Big Three in anime/manga series (Naruto, Bleach, and One Piece) are all playable characters. So one could have Naruto, Ichigo, and Luffy all team up to take on Goku in a 1v3. Good thing he can't go to his more extreme transformations, as that gives his opponents a chance.
