The "g" has two sounds. A hard sound as in "get", when it's placed before the vowels "a", "o", and "u". However, when the "g" is followed by "ue" and "ui", the "g" sound is still hard, but the "u" is not pronounced, as in the word "guitarra" (guitar), and "guerra" (war). The other "g" sound is soft. It sounds close to the "h" sound as in "house". This soft sound occurs when the "g" is followed by the vowels "e" and "i", as in the words "gente" (people), and "gigante" (giant).

I'm a new student taking Spanish, and I came in late.. I studied my Spanish greetings flash cards, and I suddenly hear I have a quiz on the alphabet.. we had a pretest... I got 15 of 20 wrong.. and I guessed letters about three times each on different questions just to get them right, but I wasn't graded luckily. Then before I gave up searching for the Spanish alphabet, I found this video that clearly explained to me the alphabet, in extreme detail. Thanks for saving my Spanish grade!

Technically CH, LL, RR are digraphs and not independent and different letters by themselves. Therefore, they were removed. About Ñ wich back in the middle age was NN, now it's considered a letter. Thats the reason why starting a sentence with capital LL is written: Ll, since it is two letters, and you only capitalize the first one. Most of the original spanish speakers are not used to, or don't know about this changes, but you can get them right from the start since you are learning now.

Careful, as well as at the beginning of the word, the Spanish R is also rolled when written as RR, between vowels. You will never see a Spanish word beginning by RR, but you will see RR between vowels when Spanish people want to make a rolling R instead of a soft R. PERRO (rolled) PERO (soft)

the V is biting your lower lip, whilst in the B your lips barely touch each other. That's the right way to pronounce them, but we don't pay much attention to it. Even us, native spanish speakers, pronounce them the same way sometimes.

Luana Debbie That is incorrect Luana. In spanish "B" and "V" are both pronounced as "B". No biting lips or teeth envolved, just lips. It has nothing to do with attention. Pronouncing the "v" rising your lower lip to touch the top teeth is an error called "ultracorrección" people trying to hard to sound educated make this mistake. Phonetically "vaso" is pronounced [ 'ba so ] and "base" is pronounced [ 'ba se ]. I am a native Spanish teacher certified by UNAM.

If anyone speaks Spanish even a little bit, if you don’t feel like reading the entire comment, please can go you down past the * and read my question? Thank you! Thank you so much! I speak English natively & was fluent in French (now i am rusty but still can speak and understand it fairly well).,.. anyway I am a new Yorker so I need to have Spanish too so I am currently doing Babbel lessons (app). It’s great! The only problem is I have ZERO Spanish at all, & even the simplest lesson on this app teaches it as if you learned Spanish in grade school and know the basics like alphabet, numbers, how to say “I am” “you are” and the simplest basics but I don’t even know that so while I am picking up some words & phrases, its hard for me to become able to speak conversationally without knowing these simple things. Also, I have a very keen ear for sounds and for languages in general, so I wanted to be sure to I do the accent correct so I don’t speak it with a French accent (I already find myself doing the French accent mouth thing- if you dk, a lot of words in French, and a big difference between French and English is that French speak as if they have pursed their lips and only open their mouth a little or in a small O shape- not a lot like with English. Anyway thanks! You explained it very simply and I understand the sounds now! I’ll use this video to practice * The only question I have from this video.... he says you only roll R if it’s at the start of the word, but when he says, “serpiente”, it sounds like he rolls the R in “ser”. Is it maybe bc it is after a vowel or another rule I should know? Not trying to pick on anyone, I just want to understand and pronounce the words right. Thank you to anyone who can explain.

That's latin-american. In most of Spain C (ce) will take the same sound as Z (as "th" in thanks)... but only followed by e or i: ce, ci; when followd by a,o,u it is pronounced as K. In latin-american, and the south of Spain z and ce, ci will be pronounced as S... Then when he says Z never vibrates in spanish... it is, most probably, just a lie out of ignorance, it does if you use the most common pronunciation in Spain.

Hi there! You should find a video where they explain you the soft and hard vowels. When the "c" is before the "a","o" or "u" the sound is like the letter "k" these are known as the hard/strong vowel (sound wise) so when you have a word such as cereal, cerca, cesta, circo, círculo the sound of the "c" will make the "s" as in side, sort, salmon. Hope it helps. Sometimes is hard to give a reason to why is like this , but that's how it is lol. Good luck with learning spanish :)
