Sadly, how Sirius escaped, was only explained in the books (in which we also find out that Harry's dad, Sirius and Peter became shapeshifters to be with Remus when he turns into a werewolf, and they wrote the magical map too), but Sirius escaped by turning into a dog and get through the bars of his cell. His motivation to break out was a newspaper article (he got the paper from the minister of magic, who pays visits to askaban sometimes) in which he saw a picture of the Weasley and recognized the rat on Ron's shoulder as his old friend, and he was afraid Peter could harm harry. Dementors can't see, they felt Sirius' thoughts becoming "simpler" when he was a dog and they thought he became mad and faded, like all the other prisoners. Askaban is on an island, so as a dog, he swam to the shore. As a dog, nobody was able to find him, because Peter, James and Sirius became Animagus in secret (it is somewhat illegal to do it without the ministry knowing what form you take when shape-shifting). Also, James was able to turn into a Stack: his and Harry's patronus. Lily's was a deer, fitting James'.

One of the things that was left out of the movie but was in The Prisoner of Azkaban novel is that James Potter (Harry's father), Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, and Peter Pettigrew were the original inventors of The Marauders Map. That is the reason why Professor Lupin knew how to use it. When the original Marauders were students in Hogwarts they were all best friends. When James, Sirius and Peter found out that Remus is a werewolf they decided to become Animagus (wizards that can willfully magically turn into an animal just like Professor McGonagall can turn into a cat) because werewolves don't attack other animals and Remus' friends didn't want him to be alone during the full moon period. This is why the map reveals the weird names when you use the "I solemnly swear I am up to no good" spell. They were the nicknames of the Marauders. Mooney is Remus Lupin because he is a werewolf. Padfoot is Sirius Black because his animagus form is a dog. Wormtail is Peter Pettigrew because his animagus form is a rat. And James Potter is Prongs because his animagus form is a stag. Dumbledore knew about Remus' condition and how Remus became a werewolf when he was only a very small child. So he had the Womping Willow tree planted and had a tunnel put in so that Remus can hide in the Shrieking Shack during the full moon cycle. 🌜🌕🌛🐺🐶🦌🐀🪄🌳🏚

Clearing some things up at the end… Lupin was not helping Sirius into the school, they were best mates from school, but Lupin thought Sirius was guilty all the way up until Peter surfaced on the map. He was actually heartbroken for 12 years thinking one of his best friends (Sirius) had betrayed his other two best friends and murdered them (Peter and James). The marauders map was made by Lupin, Peter, Sirius, and James when they were at school. They were Moony (Lupin), Wormtail (Peter), Padfoot (Sirius), and Prongs (James). Peter was absolutely in the thick of the friend group and it was a huge betrayal. So much is cleared up in the books. It’s amazing the movies are so good when so many more little details are glossed over from the books.

The one movie I love and at the same time am disappointed with is "Half Blood Prince". The history of the Gaunt Family, Tom Riddleʻs evolution and the Prince stuff is so interesting and its all left out of the movie. It makes the items in movie 7 confusing if you havenʻt read the books.
@emilythorne4119

@89gummybears SPOILERS: to me, half-blood prince is the worst movie because of how much they left out of the books. It missed the whole story of the prophecy and how Neville could've been the chosen one and how Harry only had the power to defeat Voldemort because Voldemort chose to go after Harry, therefore choosing him as his equal. The backstory of the Gaunt family, Tom Riddle Sr., Tom Jr. applying at Hogwarts, and so much more was sooo good in the book but gone in the movie. Not to mention Harry and Ginny's relationship was so much better in the book. They took a book full of rich and enticing backstory and made a movie of cringy teenage drama and half-explained plot lines. HBP is my favourite book and least favourite movie. I will never not be salty about it 😂

@@emilythorne4119 I am 100% in agreement with you that it is the best book but worst movie. The end sums it all up for me. I don't mind movies taking liberties. They have to condense so much down. And their decision to only include stuff about Harry in the movies makes sense. However, you still have to keep the characters and their personalities the same. SPOILERS!!!! For the movie to not have Harry frozen at the end... I will never get over that. Goes against his entire personality to just wait there willingly while everything unfolds. I understand some things just can't be visually represented and some things have to be cut for time. But the Snape replacement for that scene baffles me to this day.

@@PeacockJac I’ll admit I never read the books but when I was a kid, I used to think that the 6th movie was the worst but after rewatching all the movies a little more grown up, I actually appreciate it for what it is. I guess if you’ve read the books and you know what’s missing, then it would be a drag though. The one thing that is blatantly obvious (even for me) is the “half blood prince” mystery is almost entirely glossed over, which is a shame because Harry Potter imo is at it’s best when there’s a mystery that’s slowly unravelling through the movie. Anyways, that is to say I now think the 4th movie is the worst lol up until the third act, it’s rather poorly written. Plus the characters all feel off. Especially dumbledore.

The director Alfonso Cuaron is amazing. The camera work is brilliant, the look and feel of a more Medieval feel than the last two bright colours is perfect. The music is nice and folksy. There's a lot of style to it too, with lingering camera shots and pans in and outs, it never stops nor is it every stationary; it's a very curious camera. The colour tones are interesting too. Lastly, Alfonso captures the feel of being a young teenager and gets the cast to get a few tender moments here and there. I also love the recurring motifs of mirrors! Just so much personality to the whole film.

The movie really just didn't explain enough about what happened between the Lupin, the Potters, Sirius and Peter Pettigrew. The Potters went into hiding from Voldemort with the Fidelius Charm. Dumbledore offered to be the secret keeper but James felt it would be an insult not to trust his own friends (Remus, Sirius and Peter). He picked Sirius who was his best friend. But Sirius convinced James to select Peter instead, because Voldemort would never suspect Peter to be the secret keeper. Peter was considered the weak link in their group. Nobody but James, Lilly, Sirius and Peter knew that the Secret keeper was changed at the last moment. Even Dumbledore thought that Sirius would be the secret keeper. Peter betrayed the Potters. He was already the spy for Voldemort inside the Order of the Phoenix. Once Sirius found out that the James and Lily were dead he instantly knew that Peter must betrayed them. So he went looking for him. Peter, once confronted staged his own death by creating a big explosion, killing 12 muggles and cutting his own finger to leave proof behind that he was indeed dead and transformed into a rat. Sirius was found at the crime scene, laughing and the ministry thought that he killed Peter Pettigrew and the muggles and was immediately sent to Askaban, without even a trial. 13 years later, when Sirius saw the picture in the Daily Prophet showing the Weasley's in Egypt, he recognized Ron's rat as Peter and he knew that the real betrayer was still alive. The information about Peters whereabouts and knowing that he could prove his innocent helped him to transform into the black dog. The ministry did not know that otherwise they might have guarded him better. The Dementors didn't notice the change either. Because Sirius was so skinny even as a dog he manged to slip through the bars. He swam all the way to the mainland (Askaban is on an island) and confronted Harry at the beginning of the movie. When Harry took the Knightbus he moved to Hogsmeade and tried to enter the castle using one of the secret passage ways to find Ron's rat and reveal the truth. Hermiones new cat instantly knew that Ron's rat was not a rat at all but a human being. That's why she always attacked the rat. The cat even befriended Sirius in his form as black dog and both worked together and tried to reveal the truth about Ron's rat. In the book Peter faked his death a second time but was later found by Hagrid. When the three visited Hagrid, he revealed the rat to Ron. At the same time Lupin looked at the map and saw that Harry, Ron and Hermione entered Hagrid's hut but left it with another person (Peter). This was the moment were Lupin realized that Peter was still alive and that Sirius probably was innocent and framed for the betrayal and murder. The moment when Harry saw Peter Pettigrew on the map never happend in the books. It was an invention of the movies. My theory is that only a member of the Marauders (James, Peter, Lupin or Sirius) could see each other on the map. For others they were hidden. Because you have to wonder: Why did Fred and George never realize, that Ron slept with another person (Peter) in his bed ? :D Some background information: Lupin's father one day insulted Greyback, a vicious werewolf and so Greyback attacked Lupin as punishment. Lupin's parents tried everything but there was no cure. As a werewolf Lupin had a terrible childhood, being a lonely child and having no friends whatsoever. It was even unsure if he would ever be accepted at Hogwarts. But luckily Dumbledore was headmaster and he was open minded. He allowed Lupin to come to the school with certain precautions. Lupin was sorted into Gryffindor and became friends of James, Sirius and Peter. To make sure that Lupins condition would not be a danger to other students, Dumbledore installed the Whomping Willow (the big tree) guarding a secret passage to the Shrieking Shack. Lupin would go there at full-moon to transform into a werewolf. Having no one to bite or attack Lupin had to injure himself. The screams were so loud that all the inhabitants of Hogsmeade were terrified by the noises and thought that the Shrieking Shack was haunted. Lupin was so ashamed by his condition that he never told his friends, fearing that they would leave him once they knew. But in the end they found out anyway and were super open minded about that. They wanted to help Lupin. So they became Animagi, which meant that they could transform into animals (Sirius = Black Dog, James = Stag, Peter = Rat). But they did this without informing anyone. Usually you have to register at the ministry. As animals they could accompany Lupin. Werewolves only attack Humans, not animals. And as a black dog and stag Sirius and James could control Lupin.

Harry's power is emotion-based (hence 'blowing up' his aunt without a wand), the stronger he feels about something, the more he'll put into it. As for Lupin, his father worked for the Ministry, advising on Magical creatures. He was their expert. One day a group of hobos were brought in in suspicion of the murder of two children. Hidden among them was a werewolf called Fenrir Greyback. Fenrir was skilled enough to convince the officials he was nothing but a homeless Muggle (non-magical) and they were in the process of walking him out when Lyall Lupin yelled at them that he was a werewolf. The officials laughed at him and called him crazy and in fury Lyall yelled something like werewolves were "evil, soulless, deserving nothing but death!" Once the officials got Fenrir outside they were going to wipe his memory, but Fenrir had some accomplices who helped him escape. In retaliation for Lyall's statement, Fenrir sneaked into their house during the night and mauled 4 year old Remus (the scars on his face). Lyall was able to save his son, but he was bitten and turned the next full moon. Sirius escaped by starving himself and then slipping through the bars of his cell and swimming to the coast in his dog form. As an animagus, the Dementors didn't affect him as much because an animal mind is simpler and doesn't really feel the effects of a dementor.

The fact his parents would constantly move around from village to village to hide Remus' condition in case someone got 'suspicious' and never let him socialize meant he never had the chance to learn all those skills we learn growing up. I mean the fact he first latched on to Peter before James and Sirius joined them in the compartment on the train, shows he'd turn to anyone who paid attention to him, good or bad. Sirius thought this was an obvious move as they were best friends, so he suggested entrusting Pettigrew with the secret, deadly mistake. When everything goes down Hagrid is the first on the scene, and then Sirius who offers to take Harry, but Hagrid refused on Dumbledores orders, so Sirus lent Hagrid his motorbike went off to track Pettigrew. The encounter went off on the street, Pettigrew claimed that Black was the traitor and then blew the whole street killing 12 muggles and leaving a severed finger behind.

Harry was INCREDIBLY sassy in the books from the get-go, much like he is in this film. He's actually my favorite character in the books partly for that reason, and because he's SO nuanced and relatably imperfect, and just trying to figure out his way through life. He's not remotely a placeholder protagonist or audience surrogate; he's arguably the best and most strongly-written character in the whole series. Movie Harry is much more your typical, noble "hero" protagonist by comparison - not without his flaws, but I feel like the movies barely explore that side of him compared to the books. When it comes to stuff that got cut from the books, the focus is usually placed on subplots and backstories; but one of the big issues with adapting a series like this is that there's all these thoughts and internal monologues that Harry has, that don't make it onto the screen in ANY form - which means a TREMENDOUS amount of Harry's character is missing in the films. And so much of the story is told through the lens of his perspective in the books, that it causes the story to take a bit of a different shape in either medium. In the films, Harry just kind of seems like a well-mannered kid who obviously isn't perfect but is always trying to do the right thing. Obviously he does do some very good and heroic things that not everyone in his position would, but where that tends to be the central focus of the movies because they only have so much time to spare, Harry's heroic acts and virtuosity are just a fragment of the content in the books. The rest of it is just about his experience of life and the world around him as he grows up, including making mistakes and learning how to have relationships with others (not just romantic) - something far more relatable to most people than some righteous battle against an ultimate evil, which is why the books are so beloved.

As much as I love this movie, I’ve noticed that a lot of the context relies on you reading the book, this one more than the former movies. The main key with the dementors is that they are attracted to suffering, so since Harry has lived a life of abuse, they are really attracted to him and will try and snack on him any chance they get.

Lupin was turned into a Werwolf when he was still little. He could only go to hogwarts because Dumbledore planted the whomping willow over the entrance to the shed. Lupin would go there on full moon nights so he couldn’t harm anyone. Sirius, Peter and Harry’s father trained to become „illigal animagi“ ( because every animagi has to be registered at the ministery of magic and they didn’t do that) in order to turn into animals so they could stay on Lupins side because werwolves only attack humans.

Not only is Ron my favorite character, but out of the main trio, Rupert Grint has always been my favorite actor. He's the one I had the most hopes for. They dont really talk that much about it in the movies but the "Marauders" for the marauders map were Harrys' dad James, Sirius Black, Peter Petigrew and Lupin. When Lupin was a student Dumbledore knew that he was a werewolf and that on the occasion of the full moon would need to be somewhere he wouldnt be a danger to anybody. James, Sirius and Peter learned about his affliction and each became animagi so that they could stay with him during his transformations. They would move him stealthily through the castle through a secret underground tunnel that came up under what would later become known as the shrieking shack. The reason it got it's name is from all the howls and roars and other caucophony of noises people would hear coming from it while Lupin and the others were inside. Also, fun fact, Harrys' patronus is a stag because that was his dads' animagus form.

On Snape and his relationship with Lupin, James and Sirius: it's complicated, without spoiling much Snape does not like them and in the books it's said that Snape gave the lesson on werewolves because he hoped the students would realize they were being taught by a werewolf and that they would tell their parents. Being a werewolf means that you are an outcast of the society and can't really get a job so Snape was trying to get Lupin fired, which is why he also tried to make Dumbledore believe Lupin was helping Sirius. The whole thing with their relationship is explained better in the books but the movies do an alright job of telling the basics, all you need to know that Snape hated Sirius, James, Lupin and Peter and that shows how he acts with Lupin and Sirius here as well as how he talks about James to Harry.

35:00 ish - Just a note about Time Travel. Its not quite the same as the MCU or others. Usually, Time Travel is treated as creating an alternative reality where the future will now change based on the actions you take. In this case, you will never return to the point in which you first went back in time. Not unless you do so intentionally though a device, such as the MCUs device. In Harry Potter, there is no branching timeline. They stay within the same timeline and are literally traveling through time in that same timeline.

About Snape - I feel like there's quite a difference between Movie Snape and Book Snape, at least to the extent we're shown in the movie scenes directly. In the movies it's mentioned briefly (esp. through Neville), but in the books it's very clear just how badly he treats his students in general (with the exception of Slytherin). Great reaction! If you were wondering why the boggart was shifting so fast, it’s because there was multiple people in the room. Therefore it’s hard to focus on one person’s fear; it’s the reason you always have one person at least when you confront a boggart. Also when James and Lily went into hiding, there were enchantments placed around their house to prevent Voldemort or his followers from entering. They selected a Secret Keeper, a witch or wizard designated to hide a secret by means of the Fidelius Charm. The secret was embedded in their very soul. Once a Secret Keeper was selected, the person who told them the secret would find themselves unable to pass the information on again, as the Secret Keeper was the only one capable of revealing the secret, whether orally or written. The Secret Keeper could tell as many people as they liked, but they must do so voluntarily. The secret couldn't be blackmailed, bewitched, or tortured out of them. They wanted to select Sirius, but he felt it would’ve been to easy for Voldemort. So they selected Peter Petigrew, unaware that he’d deflected. When he gave them up, he sealed their death. As for how Sirius escaped, while in Azkaban he saw the picture of Ron’s family in Egypt and spotted Peter Petigrew. He then transformed into his animagus form and escaped, since the Dementors were unable to recognize him in this form. 🧔🏻‍♀️🧑🏻🪄🦌👻

First two movies, Sir Richard Harris, was Dumbledore. The remaining movies was the actor who played Gandelf. Which passed a week or two ago.

Man Snape is so different in the books. In movies they have made him much better.

Agreed. They tone down his cruelty & just make him mysterious & somewhat mean.

I don´t know. I like Alan Rickman´s potrayal but I think I like complex and grey book version more.

You guys really have a knack for asking perceptive questions and noticing small details, it makes your reactions really fun to watch! I've been watching the show "Vikings" lately, and wanted to recommend you guys add it to your watch/react list. Since you enjoyed GoT, I think you'd like it. :)

Here is where our story begins it's darker turn in preparation for the next one, and in that one - play time's over.

35:38 : in the books, Dumbledore explains to Harry that those who loved us but died never truly left us. That's why James was with Harry that night, through Harry's Patronus, which he shares with his father who was a stag Animagus as well.

10:06 in the books the dementors were actually checking every carriage, but im assuming for pacing reasons this wasn't shown in the film!! small detail but something i remember from reading them 10 years ago 😭 also pretty sure many students got 'attacked' but harry was the only one that fainted

Something made more clear in the book but not the movie: the identity of the Marauders who made the Marauders’ Map. Moony, Wormtail, Padfoot and Prongs. Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrew, Sirius Black, and James Potter. When Remus was turned into a werewolf (Moony), his three friends wanted to watch over him on his full moon nights, but couldn’t, because he’d attack them so long as they were human. So they each underwent the ritual to become an Animagus, to accompany and watch over Remus while in animal form. You’ve seen Peter and Sirius becomes a rat (Wormtail) and a dog (Padfoot), James could turn into a stag (Prongs), hence the form of Harry’s patronus. Just some of the sort of mischief they’d get up to that their map helped with.
