Mar del Plata (1960)
The 23rd Mar del Plata International Chess Tournament was held in Mar del Plata, Argentina (1) from March 29th to April 15th. Among the longtime participants of the event and the field of Argentinian masters, four grandmasters were invited to compete. Bobby Fischer was participating on behalf of the United States for the second time, while the Soviet Union sent David Bronstein and Boris Spassky to represent them, and Fridrik Olafsson journeyed from Iceland. While neither player was new to international chess, the 17 year old Fischer and the 23 year old Spassky drew a great deal of attention to themselves by dominating the event, both of them tying for first place with 13½/15. Spassky had defeated Fischer in their individual encounter and gone undefeated, but Fischer's results were not lost on the Soviets who perceived him as a potential challenger to their long reign in international chess.

I love how pathologically focused Fischer was that after this defeat he devoted his entire attention for months to "refuting" the King's Gambit theoretically. I don't think Fischer's defense is a refutation, just a very strong defense, but it does make white's game much less fun.

I found an old chess openings text my grandmother owned. Having an unhealthy affinity for playing the kings gambit, I went in the index to find the corresponding section. After seeing a Spassky v Fischer game was included in the chapter, I furiously riffled to the page, and, to my astonishment, momo had folded the corner and marked it with a star! It was a bit uncanny, but surely not a coincidence, as impeccable taste is clearly a family trait.

Antonio, I'm surprised you didn't mention that this game was the reason for Bobby's 1961 article "A Bust to the King's Gambit"! He was apparently so upset by his defeat that he analyzed the opening thoroughly and the article is a major reason why the King's Gambit fell further out of top-level play. Fischer concluded that after 3.Nf3 d6 black wins by force. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King%27s_Gambit,_Fischer_Defense

It is games like this that made me decide that the King's Gambit is my favorite opening. It is such a sharp opening for both sides and makes for so many opportunities for beautiful games (and obviously the beauty can only come from blunders and mistakes, the paradox of beautiful chess). For years I was a d4/Queens Gambit player, now I usually go for e4 into either King's Gambit of the Italian Game. I lose just as often, but the games are so much more fun and exciting.

After this loss, Bobby published an article "A Bust to the Kings Gambit". I am just very curious why he avoided 1.....e5 in their 1972 match but instead switched between Alekhine or Sicilian. I mean he could have the chance to prove that the Kings Gambit is busted. I am pretty sure Spassky would venture on it if Bobby would reply with 1....e5 as Gary Kasparov himself said: "Boris Vasilievich was the only top-class player of his generation who played gambits regularly and without fear ... Over a period of 30 years he did not lose a single game with the King's Gambit, and among those defeated were numerous strong players of all generations, from Averbakh, Bronstein and Fischer, to Seirawan. -I mean, it would have been exciting to see if Fischer could prove his claim. And I think, no Grandmasters had their views about it why Fischer avoided 1....e5 against spassky even if Bobby was an expert both in Ruy Lopez and Italian game.

The interesting thing about that nxg4 and nxe4 line is if black captures the rook right away on h1 instead of Qe7+, you play Qe2+ if bishop blocks you have Nf6+ Bh6#, and if queen blocks you have Nf6+ Bc7+ and Nd5+ winning blacks queen and this is still better for black, practically better for white though.

10:56 I, as a great 1500 rated player, would try to play qg3 as black and if he takes the bishop, I would try rd4 to distract his queen from protecting the mate. Then if he takes one rook I mate him and if he takes the other rook, I take queen, he takes queen, I take rook, he takes rook with the knight and I'd try to save the -2 by practicing some woodoo on him. But he would definitely be an idiot and take the wrong rook. That's all I can see. In case you wanna tell me I'm inaccurate at any point, nobody asked. :D

The picture of Bobby smiling is kinda sad not gonna lie, considering that this would be the last time where he would be feeling this way.

he was happy to see bronstein and spassky...but after this, the russians started cheating / colluding to hinder bobby..not surprised he became jaded.

@@CallOn84 it wouldnt surprise me at all...sociopaths tend not to have many mates. Fischer was along with morphy and Kasparov in the top 3 of all time...but he had the social skills of a turd in a swimming pool.

wait why show an already covered game, when you could've shown their other games, like the famous grunfled game where spassky played g5, and beat fischer

Found Re5. Not hard to find, once you know white has a win. Fischer was young and no doubt nervous but a surprising blunder just the same.

1:18 is that a threat? Not a trace of doubt, he just announces it. You WILL enjoy it.
