In the 90's, the SPAWN hype was real! Among that hype, we got an animated series on HBO that seems to get eclipsed by the movie. Here are my thoughts on the animated series TODD MCFARLANE'S SPAWN! #SPAWN

I'm not interested in a live action movie, I just want more of this show.
@jamesmallone3 жыл бұрын
Call me selfish, but given the option, I'd prefer a cartoon revival over a new live action movie in nearly EVERY instance. (obligatory shout out to Young Justice fans - here's hoping next season delivers the goods!) New Batman movie, complete with a new version of Catwoman, Riddler, Two-Face, Penguin and Joker....or a revival of Batman the Animated Series. Take a wild guess. (And I'm not even as big a fan of BTAS as most) At least the cartoons actually have Batgirl, Robin and Nightwing in them. While on the topics of Batman, you know what was cute and charming? Scooby Doo and Batman: The Brave and the Bold. I could go for another one of those. Gargoyles live action movie? Nah, just give me the real Greg Weisman-headed S3 in animated form, thanks. Before Lexington's VO passes away if possible. Asner would probably have to be replaced no matter what, I think he's probably too old to do Hudson. Justice League sequel or Justice League Unlimited revival? JLU all day every day. TMNT 2003 over ANY new version of TMNT that's not directly based on the IDW comics. Teen Titans/Titans.....is an anomaly. I'd prefer Titans, Go and Teen Titans co-exist since they all have different styles, approaches and goals. I don't actually think there's much in specific that needs to be done with TT that wasn't already done in the original 5 seasons, but fans want it so I'll chime in with that. Plus, Jericho, Cheshire, Wonder Girl, Miss Martian, Bunker, Solstice, the return of Red X....you could do some cool stuff. Beast Wars movie? DO WANT....but I'll happily sacrifice it for a continuation of the Beast Wars cartoon. Hell, throw in a S4 of TF Animated and Prime while we're in at, and, you know, G1 didn't even GET an ending in tv form outside of the Japanese version...if friggin' He-Man can get a continuation, G1 could. Reboot.....what I wouldn't do to get the real ending. Even if it was just an animated movie or mini adapting the official webcomic ending....even that would be marvellous.... Sonic.....actually I can't wait for the sequel to the live action flick, and they're set to film in March. But I know fans want a revival of SatAm.....which I haven't streamed yet. Outcome clearly, ask again later. Resident Evil.....is currently doing both. Good for them. Live action Zelda? Maybe a new cartoon would be the better approach. It shouldn't be hard to top the goofy original cartoon... Star Wars? Bitch please....let the movies die. Kill them if you have to. Marvel's a major anomaly. Pretty much everything I'd rather have as MCU at this point. Maybe Spider-Man if they wrap up the movie version first. EXCEPT X-Men. A revival of ANY of the X-Men cartoon shows we've had would probably be preferable to having to start all over again in new live action movies. Plus I never thought X-Men was ever capable of reaching it full potential in movie form anyway. Big Hero 6 is of course also excluded, but that one's actually still on tv right now.

Adding onto what Jeremy said about The Clown: I loved his true form, Violator. I also love as to why Violator/Clown messes with Spawn so much. It's not just because he's an asshole, picking on the one he's in charge of. In one line of dialog, Violator (as Clown) rants to Spawn about how his Clown form isn't just a disgusting disguise. It's a punishment bestowed on him from Malebolgia, because Spawn won't hold up his end of the deal he made with Malebolgia. So Violator/Clown is legit pissed at Spawn for getting him in trouble, and all his taunting and bullying is him lashing at Spawn, and for him to do his job. Makes for a unique archenemy dynamic between Spawn and Violator.
@marcusmcneal74533 жыл бұрын
Good point I almost forgot about. The series did a great job at making everything nuanced. Clown could have been a throwaway thing, but they gave him good motivations for sowing chaos and trying to push Spawn towards the forces of Hell.

The legal story surrounding Angela from Spawn is really complicated, but I'll try to summarize it for anyone curious. When Todd McFarlane founded Image Comics, he set it so that every character is owned by their creator, not the company. Then Spawn merchandise started selling really well and Todd wanted to make more, including Angela merchandise. However, Neil Gaiman wrote the story that created Angela, making him the owner. Neil offered to trade the rights to Angela for Todd's partial rights to Miracle Man, but Todd instead created a long lawsuit instead. Neil eventually won with the help of Marvel, so as thanks he gifted the character to Marvel. Angela is now Thor's long lost sister.

About Angela, if I remember correctly; a couple years ago, there was a legal dispute between Neil Gaiman and Todd McFarlane over the legal ownership of Angela. Gaiman sighted that in a previous agreement With McFarlane that because Gaiman created the Angela, he owned the rights to the Character. However McFarlane later claimed that Gaiman's work ws a work for hire case and that he was actually the one that owned Angela and all chareacters that he co-created with Gaiman; in addition McFarlane hadrefused to pay Gaiman for his work on Spawn. The legal dispute was later settled in 2012 where Gaiman got full rights of Angela before selling the charcter to Marvel in March of the following year.

I have seen the Spawn movie and is a guilty pleasure, when I was a kid I was in love with Spawn how it looked, the design of the other characters, the enemies, the animated series was so great as you said it gave another layer to the Spawn mythos, and that line from Cogliostro´s was funny, I think I'm gonna say it from now on, as always is great to see that you have passion for what you review, stay safe Jeremy.

I just rewatched the whole series. God damn, it brought me to tears. This is one grim dark and sad show. I watched it ages ago when I was a kid originally. It's a damn tragedy that the show was cancelled. Season 3 was amazing and I felt like the show was just getting started. Jesus h.

One of the best animated series ever. Purely because it exists and is the most 90s thing ever. Love it. Reaction channels really need to get on it. would be a big hit on their channels, they just dont know it yet.

About Angela, the same thing happened in the comics, and it was a licensing issue. The character was written by Gaiman (kudos for you, Jeremy), and went to have a short-lived own publication. But this was something classical in Image and other indie publishers in the 90s, authors would invite and use characters from friends or business partners like a shared universe, the same way that Mike Mignola used Freedom Torch on Hellboy's very first issue, and then he never showed up again.

Only thing I wish it had more was him using his guns. He’s supposed to be some mercenary CIA guy. Season 3 felt like everything was starting to turn around for spawn, but cliffhanger rip.

Loved Spawn as a kid in the 90's and you're right, Todd basically taught me how to draw haha. I saw the show back then (only a few episodes) and liked it, wasn't until I was like 20 something that I saw the series in it's entirety and I think it's pretty outstanding and holds up really well. Way ahead of it's time. Was always right up my alley (pun intended).

I'm glad you did a video on Spawn the animated series. I was re-watching it again and I completely forgot that Angela appeared in the first season and then did show up again (I think it may have to do with the fact that Neil Gaiman came up with the character and then had a legal dispute McFarlane. So Gaiman made an arrangement with Marvel and then character became an Asgardian)
