The CHSPT2ULTRA does call for a 50 amp breaker. If you had the CHSPT2SURGE then that would be a 15 amp breaker.

that what i used , a 50 with the ultra. i had room on the side of the service panel to mount the eaton surge protector . this way no need to extend the wire. shorter the better as in the instructions.

Per Eaton installation requirements and tech engineers the leads on a CHSPT2ULTRA are to NOT be extending by any way under no circumstance. I actually called and emailed them about this because I find those leads to be to short for most installs. But you cite manufacture specs but failed to follow one of them. Keep that in mind for any future installs if your an electrician by trade etc. Cheers

Also with the ATS from the generator being the main disconnect, any panel beyond that is now a sub panel by code. All neutrals and grounds should be separated.

Thanks for your input. The main panel does not be come a sub panel, when there is a main disconnect or ATS on the outside. You can find your answer in section 230 of the code book.

Wrong breaker and the wires should NOT be extended - Per Eaton's Installation guide the CHSPT2ULTRA must be installed with a 2-pole 50 ampere circuit breaker. They also specify that the wires should be as SHORT as possible, and NEVER extented.

One important detail is that the double 15 amp breaker has to be located right after the main breaker, just like in the video. It cannot be located anywhere that you find two empty spots. If the spot is already taken by another double or two single breakers, they or it will have to be moved to a different location so as to leave the spot for the 15 amp breaker which connects to the surge protector. Reason being is that in case of a power surge you want the surge to hit the surge protector first before it hits any other line.

Eaton says the breaker can be located anywhere in the panel. I chose to put it as close to the MCB as possible to do maximum effect for protection. If you have a fridge or freezer next to the panel it is most likely going to get damaged if the breaker is down stream from the MCB.

@@terrydavis5882 Eaton also recommends 12” or less conductor length. I would prefer to put the SPD in my panel but then I cannot see the lights. I’ve seen your video where you install in a panel and Eaton sells a panel with the SPD inside, so it seems like that’s ok. Is it against code to drill through the cover to see the lights? Or do you just ignore this problem?
@terrydavis5882
@terrydavis5882 3 жыл бұрын
@@brucemoose2 There should be a note below the video showing this was a special case. Do not put the Spd inside the panel. You can put it above the panel or below. I use a cover plate listed below the video. I also use a 1/2" offset nipple and 1/2" steel coupling and 1/2" lock nut. You will need to use the closes knock out to the front of the panel on top or bottom depending where you decide to put it. Put the threaded coupling onto the SPD and then the offset nipple. Put the SPD with all the items connected at the top of the panel. Make sure to choose one of the front knock outs. make sure its not close to the side of the panel. There are 2 x 4 on each side of the panel. Then when you have the exact height. Then trace out the SPD and cut it out. you will need to angle it in. Make sure to shut off the main breaker when doing this and where leather gloves and safety glasses. The black and red wire will go to the breaker. If you need further help let me know. Good luck with your project.

Nice job with the surge protection. 2020 code requires a disconnect outside so my sub panel, similar to yours will have arc fault breakers. The two large busses are intended for the clip on arc fault breakers so no pigtails are needed. In my case I had to add a separate ground bus so I would have the dedicated neutral bus on both sides for arc fault breakers. PS you should have a bushing where your lines feed in the top of the panel.

So it will be behind the sheetrock where the owner can’t see the lights to see if surge protector is working or change it out when needed.

Does it matter what side of the panel you install the breaker on for the Eaton SPD? If you're facing it you put it on the right... would the left work as well since it's a double pole?

If you sheetrock around it, how will you change it out when it goes bad? I would've thought it would've been in an access box. I'm not an electrician just thinking about installing one in my own home.

Thanks for your input and concern about the SPD. When install a SPD or replacing one that has gone bad. You just need to cut the sheet rock the same size as the Spd. The cover that is listed below will cover the sheet rock and hide the larger hole that you had to do when removing the old SPD from the panel.

The lights on these are intended to be seen as an indication of when the surge protector is no longer viable. They should never be mounted behind sheet rock or behind the panel cover. Most SPD manufacturers also sell flush mount kits that secure the device in a visible location outside the panel

I was always under the impression that it is not to code to add wires within a main panel to extend the wire going to a breaker, in this installation, the SPD has to be installed in such a manner to be close enough to attach to the breakers using the original length of the SPD wire, am I incorrect?
@terrydavis5882
@terrydavis5882 3 жыл бұрын
When installing an SPD you have up to including the wires on the SPD not to exceed 18". Anything longer will increase damage to items in the house. With the standard length you will still not be able to protect 100% those items that are plug into an outlet close to the panel. I always try to install it as close as possible to the main breaker. Eaton has a kit to install it at the bottom of the panel. This breaker is usually installed on the last two remaining stops of the panel.

First. Bad way to mount this spd. If it gets a hard enough hit they break and you need to replace this one. So you’ll have to cut open the wall and pry it out. There are SPDs with user replaceable modules and the base can be flush mounted. Two the ground wire. Outside should not enter at a hole that low. It should be parallel to the mains coming in and go through the same hole as the lines. And you need to have a grounding bus bar terminal on that ground wire below the meter for cable and satellite and whatever else. NEC 2008. 250.94 Bonding for Other Systems. An intersystem bonding termination for connecting intersystem bonding conductors required for other systems shall be provided external to enclosures at the service equipment or metering equipment enclosure and at the disconnecting means for any additional buildings or structures. The intersystem bonding termination shall comply with the following… And you can’t have that many conductors going into a panel through one large knockout tied together. Are you kidding me. That’s why there are 20 knockouts on top. You separate wires. Otherwise you run the risk of overheating. Looks like a kid installed it.

How is the wiring of the Rolex coming out of the panel legal? All of the Rolex is bunched up tight. As far a I understand it you would have to de-rate all of the wiring due to heat generation. Correct me if I am wrong but I don’t see why you just didn’t use the individual knock-out’s.

A dedicated 2 pole 15 amp circuit breaker is recommended for CHSP devices, but a 2 pole 50 amo circuit breaker to achieve the full published rating of the CHSPT2ULTRA device.
