In the first 3 minutes of the video, it becomes evident like you are a total professional on this. You know the terminology and technicisms involved in these issues. Very grateful.

Thank you very much for this video. It's really inspiring! I have a question about the word politician. I wonder which letters of the word "politician" the syllable division tɪʃ represents? Is it tici or tic? Thank you very much for your help.
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent Жыл бұрын
Hi Jack - You're very welcome! I'm so glad this video inspired you! :) I'm not entirely sure how the spelling of "politician" corresponds to the syllable breakdown, but my instincts tell me that / tɪʃ/ is represented by the letters "tic". I could be wrong, though! :)

Hi Julie, what should be the standard speed per spoken word? I cant find the answer online. Should I try to keep it at 60 speed or is that to slow for conversational english? Thanks for your help!!!
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent3 ай бұрын
Hi @missdmx - Thanks for your question! There is a wide range of what is considered "average" or "standard" when it comes to speaking rate because there are a lot of factors that can affect rate. But I was taught that "slow" might be around 90 words per minute; "average" might be 180 words per minute (range from 120-220); and "fast" might be 240 words per minute. And just one note: The numbers I've written here don't reflect "beats per minute", like you might see on a metronome. To get the "words per minute", you literally talk for a minute and count the number of words you say in that minute (or you can talk for 2 minutes and divide that number by 2, or 3 minutes and divide by 3, etc.). But take these numbers with a huge grain of salt - there is a lot of variability with speaking rate, and a lot of it comes down to personal preference :) I hope this helps!

I teach English myself and this exercise will be so good for my students!! May I ask what dictionary you refer to to look up the IPA?
@SanDiegoVoiceandAccent2 жыл бұрын
Hi Miho - Thanks so much for your comment! Please share this video with your students - I'm so happy that you think this will help them :) I write a lot of my IPA transcriptions myself because that's sometimes more accurate than using a dictionary. And hey, if you think this video would help other people, it would be great if you wrote a Google Review about it: g.page/r/CRKVA27p84i0EB0/review. This would help others to find my videos! Thanks! :)
