@fcake-v5y I hate when trailers spoil the movie. Remember Invisible Man from a few years ago? ***Spoilers ahead****** The damn trailer showed us the special suit the man was using to be Invisible, so we know the whole movie that he's real and can really be Invisible. The movie would have been way more intense if we weren't sure if his wife was telling the truth or if she was just nuts. But the whole time it was just about if the other characters would believe her or not. Bad marketing!

While I understand the frustration with the original ending I personally feel that was the point of the entire movie. The family was so obsessed with politeness and not being percieved as insensitive that they let these people walk all over them. I personally love films like The Stepford Wives, Rosemary's Baby, and The Vanishing with grim unsatisfying endings that serve as disturbing warnings to the audience. I feel like modern audiences tend to feel like there needs to be this sense of closure and triumph at the end (the bad guys lose or get comeuppance in some form or at the very least a singular main character makes it out ok), hence why remakes/American and English speaking remakes tend to alter the endings. And while there's nothing wrong with wanting that (as it means the audience is invested in the film and cares enough about these characters to want them to make it out) I do love endings where the audience is supposed to be left disturbed or disatisfied with what happened. However, I'm looking forward to the remake and hope I get to see it soon. ❤

Nice to hear that the remake was so much different than the original. Like you, I was really surprised that a remake was coming out. The original is so much about the Scandinavian politeness (I´m Swedish, so it felt pretty close to home :)), and I was wondering how that would translate. When I saw the original I did not feel like ever watching it again - I think I was really scary and so uncomfortable. But I think I will watch this one, but I might give it a few years first. I just saw this last night and I really enjoyed it! The tension was so palpable I remember a few times where I could feel my heart beating so hard. James McAvoy is also a treasure as always. One of my fave things about my showing is I think that people who went to see this at my theater were not used to watching horror or bloody thrillers cause the moment where a hammer is involved people audibly gasped out loud which made me laugh as someone who has seen way more gory things. My theater also was laughing too. I have not seen the original yet but I'm definitely gonna give it a watch. I'm glad the films are different enough so though there are similarities I can still enjoy the experience of watching the original.

I actually enjoyed it after going in quite cynical. My take is that this film is actually much more a Black Comedy than a thriller and is certainly not a horror film. I am fairly sure the film was intentionally funny and once I realised this then I got much more on board with it. While the first film is this slow descent into hell this film justifies its existence by being an entirely different experience. Although as i am from and watched in the UK, this is the British perspective. Lots of the Britishness, especially of McAvoy's dialogue and performance, resinated as very humorous for us and out cinema thought the film was hilarious. The first film goes The Vanishing and this third act goes Scream. At one point in the third act, I think it was when a molotov was lit lol, I actually muttered "this film has gone off the rails" haha. But I enjoyed it and was entertained, even if it was stripped of its deeper meaning to give the US their lighter ending. Although I think the very very ending and the final shot was actually very very good and cool. Despite the first hour being a lesser almost shot for shot redux of the original, the back half became a completely different film and in the end I relented and found myself accepting that I actually thought the film wasn't bad. I would give the original a strong 7/10 and this remake a pretty strong 6/10 as well. I was pleasantly surprised with it. Also I forgot to mention the greatest part of the remake that makes it work and that is James McAvoy giving an immaculate performance that is equal to that of a Nicolas Cage or Dennis Hopper performance (and I do NOT take saying this lightly in the SLIGHTEST!). Anyway sorry for the ramble, this may look like a lot lol but somehow I wrote the longest review I have ever written on Letterboxd for this film haha. I guess it got me thinking, not necessarily about the film itself but in comparing it to the original. Yh I wrote a lot more on my Letterboxd.

So the ending is different?? SPOILERS FOR ORIGINAL. I'm guessing they get away...which makes the movie sort of null and void. The thing the made the original so disturbing was the ending. It was soooo bleak Have you seen "the nightingale??" Same actress in this film and she is amazing in that
@levischorpioenАй бұрын
Yeah if this has a happy ending, then there is zero reason for the film to exist. Honestly, the fact that both families speak English as a first language kinda renders it pointless too. Even as someone who could understand one of the two couples in the original (me being Dutch), the paranoia of never knowing if something said in private was translated correctly when asked about it, the paranoia of never knowing if someone’s talking shit about you in a language you don’t understand, it all adds to the atmosphere. Do away with that and you basically just destroy most of the film’s tension.

I recently watched the original film in preparation for this release so both are fresh on my mind. I agree the remake is more intense. You mentioned sound design, there were multiple times I jumped due to an unexpected shotgun blast or another sound source that came from the darkness. I would love to hear the reactions from viewers who have not watched the original. Part of the suspense for me was knowing how the first film ended and wondering how they would get…there. The comparisons to Funny Games is apt, I actually like the remake due specifically to the performances of Watts & Roth. A comparison I was thinking of was one that I’m sure not a lot of people saw, “Straw Dogs”. SD (especially in the original) deals with a passive, impotent male dealing with culture of male toxicity. I love the original Dustin Hoffman version and felt the remake was a fair, modern update on the theme. Likewise I enjoyed this remake and am still trying to land on which I prefer, because as you pointed out, both are unique. Thanks for the review and the content.

As a person who tries to be always be kind and usually keeps myself from judging others, I was not impressed with the original. To me, it was a ridiculous snuff film in disguise trying to take itself seriously. And before people start saying: "but that was the point!" If wanted to watch something that warned me against being a doormat, I could watch a children's movie for that. And you know what? That children's movie would actually be MORE realistic than the original. From what I heard, it seems the remake will EMBRACE the ridiculousness of the original and that the characters are actually realistically braver. So I might actually like the remake more.

Saw the remake today. Definitely a chance for James McAvoy to bring his own form of madness. I remember when there used to be multiple suspense thrillers that came out during the year where an established actor/actress could play a truly homicidal role. I guess that trend kind of burned out in the 2000's, but I would love to see it make a revival. The ending was very different, and I was okay with that. The original film has such a tragic end that this Hollywood version seemed to go for the perfect happy ending. I can see why the comparison to "The Vanishing" is being made. I gave it a score of 6/10. The original I gave a 4/10, but that was because of the tragic ending.

Why hasn’t he made this incredibly punchy, unrelenting ending?'” Watkins told SFX Magazine. “But I would argue, with my characters and their journey, I’m following through their journey in terms of agency and how they would react,” he added. it just makes me so angry to see the guy argue that he's doing a good thing by completely altering the core of the movie itself just because he can't understand the cultural difference between his american view and the original movie's danish point of view. if you can't even respect the cultural differences or the reason for the original being the way it is then don't bother remaking it when a remake should at least have some respect for the original material, just go make your own movie

I enjoyed the original. Its a literal gut punch. Hence the remake would address unrealistic points(culture)about what people would actually do.

I thought the same! but it takes a different angle

But but, just like a Quiet place, Barcelona, tho. Seems like Netflix or studios are changing continents' same premise but diff outcome

Damn, the original literally terrorised me and I almost wish I hadn't seen it😂 so I was hoping this one wasn't interesting at all, but now I kinda wanna see it... lol

I loved the first half of the original...and the second half of the new one

I saw the new remake yesterday. It was really funny in the beginning, then got really uncomfortable and ended out ridiculously stupid - i loved it. I think it's fine to have two different versions of a movie. All the highbrows can watch the original and hate the new version and dummies like me can appreciate both versions for their differences

I watched 2 disturbing movies today, so I gotta head on home & poo my pants😮 Jk😂😂 Others can say what they will, but James McAvoy always plays a sinister villian so brilliantly!👏😱🌟

It was an okay film for me. I mainly watched it because of HaltCatchFire alums Scoot and Makenzie. I forgot that the 2022 was about Dutch/Danish people. Was there a reason why the 3 Danish people were made fun of in this film?

Seated now. Very reluctantly in an empty theatre for the remake, I saw the original at a midnight Sundance film festival screening upon initial release. I love the original, I’m scared I’m going to roll my eyes during this remake.

I hear the trailer gave lots away. I have stopped watching trailers almost fully in the last few years I think, at least for horror. I loved When Evil Lurks, loved it and found the trailer to spoil everything in the entire film when I watched it after seeing the film.

Wait hold up. This movie is a remake?! I had literally no idea

I finally watched the original a couple of days ago after seeing the trailer to the remake when I watched Alien Romulus. I've seen a lot of the disturbing films you have showcased etc but my god I really wasn't prepared for this one. A real slow burn with one hell of a finale! I think I'll definitely be checking out the remake in the cinema.

The trailer made me irrationally upset because it gave so much away. I’m glad to hear it’s different enough but I’ll wait for VOD 😅

I usually never get upset over remakes. Yes, I think most of them are unnecessary and bland and it makes me sad that we are apparently losing the ability to create original stories anymore, but this one... This makes me mad. And sad. Just watching the trailer - where they gave everything away - raised my blood pressure. Like, really? The kid with the tongue? In the trailer? Wow. And I'm going to go ahead and assume that the family fights back here, which takes away everything from the original. There, we are sucked into this pit a darkness and despair, it was honestly one of the most frustrating, horrible and gut wrenching endings I have ever scene, and in the remake - they changed it? Then just write and original story! Don't try and ride on the success of the original, it's just rude. I enjoyed hearing your thoughts on it, though, thanks for taking us along!

I loved (if that’s the right word 😵💫) the original, and from the trailer it really looks like they ruined everything I liked about it. I’ll probably still watch it for Mcavoy, but this film was so unnecessary to me when the original was so good. People pleasers like me very much get that film!

The original the both Dutch parents were naive from beginning to the end. I watched the trailer for this one the mother looks suspicious from the moment they say hi to host family. Maybe the acting is off or it is miss direction and not a "women's intuiton" and the father is the only gullible one. I like McKenzie, she is incredibly actor specially*Halt and Catch Fire* and *Station Eleven*. And Iam excited to her in big screen again.
@spookyastronautsАй бұрын
It's the danish that are the naive in the original, I think Mckenzie is great in this. it highlights her character in a different way.

My problem with Americans, is they don't think anything else exists outside of America and for some reason they got the best of everything 😂 yall need to travel outside of the us sometimes and start watching films from other countries

I couldn't get into the original one, as a father. One sign of some creep messing with my family and i shut it down immediately. I would believe i cam be stuck in an Abigail situation 100 times before this
