Because of this video I nearly made a huge mistake. I can't stand any kind of hiss coming from my equipment. So I bought the yamaha HS7s from Thomanns. I just had a nagging feeling that I should at least try the Eris E5s so the next day after placing my order for the HS7s I bought the E5s. My experience was entirely different from yours. The Eris E5s are dead silent. I hear no hiss at all. The HS7s are dead silent also. To me they are both excellent monitors. I decided to send the HS7s back but only for one reason. The E5s fit much better in my space and I like the fact that they are front ported. They are about 4 inches from the wall and the HS7s were right up against the wall. Not a good thing for rear ported speakers. I'm happy that my E5s are hiss free, front ported and just the right size.

The Yamahas have a much more present midrange, which is the best quality a monitor can have for mixing.

I just got the Presonus E5's. First thing I did was connect up via RCA phonos. Result was annoying hum noise. It sounded like computer electrical noise or some kind of interference. So i switched to XLR balanced connectors (my audio interface is unbalanced, so I had to route an M-Patch 2 passive volume control box). I now have near silent monitors. There is some white noise if I stick my head up against the tweeters, but it's quieter than the ambient background noise in my house. This is with the monitors and the pc plugged into the same power outlet. I think probably the unbalanced connections on this monitor are susceptible to noise in various circumstances. Conclusion: don't write off the presonus monitors - I find them quite detailed and revealing, especially in the all important mid range.

You get white noise and hum from using unbalanced cables. Don't use RCA plugs for monitors. Use stereo phone connectors or xlr. They have better interference protection.

About the Erises: Not sure if you mean white noise, a continuous hiss, or interference, which is random bursts of noise, or hiss or scratchy noise that changes in volume when, say, you move cables, or someone walks around the room. Other commenters have talked about interference and possible sources of it, so I'll discuss white noise. If it's white noise (unchanging hiss) it's probably because Presonus cheaped out, saving maybe 20 cents a pair by using cheap, noisy op-amps such as 4558s rather than NE5532s (the industry standard, every piece of recorded music you listen to has probably been through 50 of them). Or it's a design problem with the pre-amplifier, which is unlikely, since they have been doing preamps for a while. But perhaps the level control and/or high control are direct coupled and there is a DC current through them. The problem would be made worse by the cheap op-amps. Again, this would be cheaping out, because DC blocking capacitors for the controls would add maybe another ten cents to the cost of the amp. Another possible source of hiss is if they are using a cheap IC for the power amplifier. There is a major faking problem in China in this part of the electronics industry, with cheap ICs re-badged as good ones. A source of interference that would sound like white noise is the switch-mode power supply that must be in the same speaker as the amplifier. Again, perhaps they saved a few cents by not enclosing the SMPS in a grounded aluminum case. Other sources of "hash" (white-noise-like interference) include uninterruptible power supplies, computer power supplies, or general poor condition of the mains distribution network in your area or in your building - solution: a mains power conditioner; and nearby cell-phone towers or FM transmitters. The solution to that last problem is to move away.

Im not sure if youre doing this; but make sure your speakers are plugged into an entirely different power source (wall mount outlet or stip) than your computers and mixers. I always make sure to have all three plugged into different power sources to eliminate frequencies being shot into your equipment due to lack of efficient conditioned power.

I bought Eris one month ago. Have to send them back. Bass was just mess. Maybe it´s a air movement problem. Some music sounded nice but other were weird. For example Lukather guitar sound was really weird in some records. Can´t do job with them. So I ordered HS7, same price range and wish the best. Got these yesterday. Really amazing they are compared to eris. Eris sound like 300 € speaker, Yamaha like 1000€ .In this video if i remember right , says that there is noice in Yamaha. No any noise at all. The cables should be TRS balanced cables or xlr.. Not regular instrument cable. Totally silence with trs. I´ve studied a top music school and played top bands, teaching 25 years and ears are pretty good.This is the first time that I review something, but like to help if someone is wondering what to buy. Don´t waist time with Eris 5. Yamaha have 6,5 woofer so no need for sub usually. I dont need anyway.Maybe Eris 8 are better, don´t know... My searching is over:)

Re the noise - You might have electrical noise on your home supply that's getting through (switch-mode power supplies can cause this, like most electronic items use nowadays), and maybe the more expensive Yamaha's have better noise suppression circuitry. Might be interesting to try the E5s in another building to see if there is any difference.

I have a pair of Eris 5 as secondary mix speakers. They are so good they may as well be my primary pair for final mix check. No white noise on idle whatsoever and perfectly silent at rest with power on.. The Presonus guys were being polite with you for sure, and I could almost guarantee they intimated that there was something in your setup causing it if there was deemed to be no fault. With all due respect, that doesn't look like the ideal setup. There are mains cables crossing audio cables at 90 degrees (just having balanced cables wont help you there in every case), very close proximity to two monitors and who knows what else.

watched a vid a few minutes ago on the presonus eris monitors and he had the same problem with the white noise, but he resolved it by moving his wifi router ( maybe not the router, but he definitely mentioned some kinda wifi thing ) farther away from the speaker and the white noise went away. However, I think i'm gonna go with the HS7's. Thanks...great to see a comparative review, so very helpful.

+Black Raven Films I got the HS7, but even with HS7 I got a low frequency buzz from the speakers. I had the level on my HS7 set to +3db boost which if I remember right is 70%. But I figured out that the white noise and the buzz problem is in the signal chain. So what I did was instead of boosting the db on the speakers I turn them to -3db or less, and then turned the sound card output louder. This lowers the speaker noise floor and boosts the audio level going in the speakers. However after using them for a while even when there was no buzzing I found that HS7's had incorrect representation of lower frequencies, I measured the freq. response and found that they only go down to 100hz and then there is a steep drop. Even tried them in different rooms, to see if room was the issue. Finally I sold them and I'm not sure if I would even go for HS8's for bass, as Yamaha's product representation is false.

I especially noticed the lack of low end when mixing sub bass or even low kicks, so I would not recommend them for mixing hip hop. Havent bought any new speakers yet, but I have worked on m audio bx8 d2 and got good results because of the 8 inch speaker. So I might go for those, They are quite cheaper, but thats because of the lack of room controls in back. And kevlar speaker material is better in my opinion.

Those monitors have to be raised a bit higher because monitors deliver sound directionally so the centre of the woofer has to be in line with your ears for optimal monitoring. Make sure they are equal distances apart and from your ears or the listening position with each target each ear. Left monitor to the left ear and right to the right ear.

I respect Adam's feelings/opinions on the noise level of the noise from the tweeters of the Presonus E5's. However, in fairness to anyone who may be viewing, I think it would be helpful to know that on the E5's in my room, I measured less than 1db of noise at 1 ft from the tweeter. For Adam, this was an issue and that's fine. However I think for most people, this would be an absolute non-issue. FWIW.

I watched another review on the E5's where the guy initially had the same issue with white from one of the monitors but discovered it was caused by his wireless router being too close to the monitor. Once he moved the router the noise disappeared. I myself own a pair and have no issues with white noise. The fan noise from my Mac Pro is more of an issue. Soon to be resolved when I receive my iMac;-)

If they're unconnected from any source, that white noise is probably coming out from the internal (cheap) power amplifier (or cross-over), not the tweeter itself. It's difficult to fix it without "re-engineering" the internal components. Nice choice with HS7.

I wish I had watched this video before I bought the E5's + Sub8. After using a pair of Celestion KR2 + Yamaha A100a amp for 25+ years I decided to do some upgrade... and I was shocked by the noise level of these things. My KR2's were dead silent after 25 years of daily use, even with volume up, the sound was perfectly balanced and clean. The Eris E5 + Sub8 are noisy even when not connected to anything (think of 3 speakers humming in a small semi-treated room). The E5's are ok in the mids but not as clean as my dinosaur KR2 and the highs are not defined, you have to boost the highs but it still lacks definition. The Sub8 is also muddy and lacks a lot of definition, I wish I had bought a pair of HS8 and I would be way better off. If you are considering the E5's + Sub8 for mixing you can forget it. Nowadays whatever is sold as "studio-grade" has to be taken with a big grain of salt.

Yamahas are the best mixing monitors in their price range. I think the lack of bass on the HS5s can actually be a benefit. That said, you would definitely need to check your low end elsewhere. You should probably be doing that anyway. That said, the HS7s are the perfect mixing monitors if you could only have one.

i have been using presonus eris5 daily for almost a year now for mixing, producing hiphop music. gotta say the ear fatigue is so real lol. for the eris5 I can describe that at some point i does sound flat enough to hear all details, but it doesn't sound tight and clear. its more like they made all freqs equally louder and flat so you can hear details. its so loud to pinpoint any details in the mix that's why it cause ear fatigue. not long ago i got a chance to listen, comparing hs5 and eris5 at audio shop. hs5 even tho it lack the low end. they are flat alright but also sound tighter and clearer to hear details. no tricks to my ears. im saving up to change to hs5 then hs8s subwoofer later

A lot of people complain about the lack of bass on the Yamaha hs5 but people dont know thats basically the magic of the design of the speakers. Lets put it this way...if you have a well treated room with bass traps or your room doesnt resonate bass frequencies like most of home studios rooms , they will lack bass. But if your room have no bass traps and your room resonate like 99% of the home studio rooms then the same room will resonate those low frequencies and there you go ...you now have the bass the speakers originally were lacking. Thats the problem a lot of people use them in well treated rooms and they were designed specially for the home "room" studio owner in mind. I actually had the HS50M and changed them for the HS7 now I noticed theres a lot of low frequency pressure in the room even with bass traps. So I know for sure the HS5 will sound much better in the room due to the lack of low frequency. Something to have in mind.

I own both the Yamaha HS50 and HS8 and their accompaning 8" subwoofer. As a long time keyboard player who plays a lot of classical pipe organ as well as all your typical synth VST's, even the HS8's with the Yamaha sub don't have enough low end for me, so I take the Yamaha subs 'sub out' and run it into a KRK K10s 10" sub and that works great. Now I've been looking for a 4th set of studio monitors (I also have Tannoy PBM 6.5s) and the Presonus 5's and a Presonus 10" sub has been on my radar, so I'm going through youtube reviews of the Presonus right now. As far as the Presonus hiss goes, I've never had a set of active bi-amped studio monitors that didn't hiss when the level on the speaker back is turned up (I've owned the KRK VXT6's as well) To get around the hiss I run all my monitors volume levels at around half way, and turn up the levels on everything else i.e. my DAW, synthesizers, iPads, etc are cranked. Are you saying the presonus have hiss even turned downed past half way?

Would've loved the hear said white noise. How much is a couple of dBs? Asking because I've been around a few sets of the PreSonus', and never experienced any noise beyond what little any speaker will output once turned on. And in a big head to head test of a lot of speakers, they absolutely _wiped_ the floor with the Yamahas - switching from the Yamahas to the PreSonus' was like pulling wool out your ears, as the soundstage opened and "new" details appeared. Also since you know a pro soundguy, I would suggest you have a serious talk with him about placement of speakers with rear firing bass port. Because the setup you have here in the video, will have wildly out of control frequencies, as well as ambient- and clutter noise. Neither the speakers, nor the setup, is at any point suitable for critical listening, mixing, or any of the sort. I know I'm too late with this part, as you'll probably have used them for over 1 year now. But it's worth considering here that the Yamahas are at best average compared to the nearest competition. They are some of the most recommended speakers, by people that have absolutely no understanding of the difference between front and rear firing bass ports. And probably haven't done a single critical test between speakers in a suitable enviroment. But rather just chosen the Yamahas on recommendation and the fame of the NS-10s - which incidently was famous for being crap speakers, which made them good for reference listening, *not* good primary monitors.

I have E5s, and after watching this I tried to get everything as quiet as I possibly could to check my monitors for tweeter white noise. I could hear some white noise coming from the tweeter on one (only one) of my monitors. In order to hear it, I had to put my ear right up to the tweeter. If I sat at a reasonable distance from the speakers (which in my studio is only about 600mm or 2'), I couldn't hear it. Maybe my hearing is going, maybe there's something different in the environment between our two spaces. This is in no way a slight against the Yamaha which I believe are excellent monitors and I would have considered them except that where I am they are a more expensive option and at this point my budget was fixed around the Eris E5 price as a maximum and I am very happy with the Eris. As you say, they have a great sound. If I could ask Black Raven, did the white noise get worse over time or was it fairly constant from the start with both sets of E5 monitors you tried? I'm interested to know if I should keep my ears open for any changes in the future.

Actually if you keep your volume way up and not playing any music or sending any sort of signals to the speakers, you will get that audible white noise. It's not just only Eris is at fault. Doesn't matter what brand of monitors/speakers you use. I was hoping you will say that Yamaha don't do that but you didn't say that. I have M-Audio, I have Eris and I get that white noise when I turn up the volume and not playing anything. Its normal for any speaker to do that. Keep in mind, the amp volume is pushing power to the speakers and it has some sort of impact on the tweeters. Unless, you use any gate/hush device in the signal chain to keep it dead quite. Also, if you leave you volume up and suddenly clicked to play a music, that should deaf your ears out or damage your speakers/monitors very easily. NOT a good idea to keep you volume up when you are not playing anything. Normal practice is, turn your volume down when not in use. IMO.

+Joshua Pinter You'll definitely want a sub, even with the HS7's. The HS7's certainly produce audible bass, down to 45 Hz, but a subwoofer is where the magic happens. Modern mixing focuses heavily on bass clarity and you'll want to stay on par with the pros. Even if you're not mixing Hip-Hop or EDM, it's important to have that extra precision of a sub woofer. Hope that helps!

Man, I just met you, but I already owe you a beer or a soda, if you prefer: I am trying to find some nice speakers to replace my old m audio sp8b, and I was already interested by the iris e5, thanks to its great specs. Then, I also noticed the yamaha hs series. But at only 55hz for bass frequencies, I thought the hs5 might have been too weak for my needs. The hs8 bass response is great, but the monitors are way too big... so I was left with the iris and hs5. But now, thanks to you, I won't be buying the iris e5, that noise sound would have made me crazy and want to commit suicide. And the hs5, like you say, proves I was right about the eventual weak bass. so there we are. I will certainly go for a pair of hs7, perfect, size and response frequency/bass wise. A huge huge sincere thank you, from the other continent.

Artkidtek I suggest you do your research for them. I bought HS7, and they were lacking low freq. They were deffinately not playin down to 43hz, at best 70hz with a drop starting at 100hz. I tried them with a sub and it was a mess. Personally I wouldn't go for HS8, as I fear I might sell them in a few months.

+kristaps 5645 HELP ! I am trying to get the right pair for a very basic set-up, but don't want to skimp on the speakers. Elsewhere the Eris E5 was valued as the best for its price range (here € 298/pair), which would haven been great - if it wasn't for Black Raven Films review...Next in line were Yamaha HS 7 as the first serious contender (here € 387/pair with stands). I always that that the much more expensive HS 8 (here € 589/pair) would be THE speaker to reference everything below € 1.000/pair..but discarded for price in favour of the HS7. After reading the review and the comments, I started thinking of HS 7 plus the HS 85 (here € 444) as an even better - if pricier - combination ...which you have just shattered as well. So back to the beginning - what is there in the € 300 - € 500 price range that is "right" ? I need neutral monitoring for recording amateur. But I am not deaf. Not yet, anyway...

+kristaps 5645 funny you should say that - the M-audio BX8 D2 was my first choice...very reasonable priced over here ( € 285), but I got to read so many bad reviews...mainly about white noise, lack of natural bass, etc.. I understand that size matters, but so does quality. What would you pick on bang for the buck ? HS 8 (€ 589) or BX8 (€ 285) ? I understand about mathematics...but do you get three times as much joy out of the Yamahas ? Or is it "just" double ? It is the price relation that will really do it, I guess..beggars can't be choosers .

Not sure where you placed your amp or audio interface also. You could argue "this does not happen with the Yamaha" that's ok, evey studio monitor is different, some more sensitive than others but I can gurantee you mine does not produce any noise, not even with my ear close to the woofer or twiter.

Man, I'm glad I see this review. You talk about white noise, and that's exact what it is. The Tannoy reveal and JBL LSR's have this too. And every budget monitor with a Class D amplifier will have this anoying white noise. It is there because class D amplifiers needs very expensive filtering at the end of the signal line to avoid this white noise! ! I have a UCD180 high end class D amp and there is no noise at all. Dead quiet. But I had to pay for that! When you have budget monitors with class A/B amps this noise will not be present

The HS7 sounds clear cause it's brutal honesty there, but the fullness is absent. I compared the HS7 with the big brother HS8 and the difference in depth was huge in my mind, but then again the H8 occupies alot of space and that was an instant showstopper for me anyhow. I'm mixing some voiceover recordings and the rest of the time it's just your normal desktop usage like youtube, mp3 files, web tv and some ripped movies. I think the HS-series will be too hard on my ears for that, so as a hybrid speaker (studio monitoring and hifi) they won't cut it. My search continuous...

Please Help Me Out!! ..Anybody! I am thinking of buying the HS7 next week. Can I 'cut off' the low frequencies on these monitors so i can mix better .. I heard small rooms cannot handle low frequencies well. I have tiny tiny room(7ftx7ft). I have no other space than that for now but i might move to a larger space in the coming years therefore, i want to get a 7 inch instead of a 5 inch. So, does it help if i cut off the low frequencies on monitors?
@ChrisBessy
@ChrisBessy 2 жыл бұрын
sory for the 4 years LOL ...... with bass on "zero" the sound is very flat. You can adjust bass on -2 or -4dB ..... but it's not CUT the bass. Thus on -4dB all the bassline is less volume. You can hear a little the bassline to 43Hz. Thus it's less bass, not a cut. (for example on my eris you can cut the bass). But no worry, the HS7 is flat with the bass.
