These guys were out in the Ocean all day to get this fish. This fish was speared on the last run of the day. They got two for the day. Obviously this was the biggest one. They were given to the Locals in NZ to eat. It was not sold for Profit or even to recoup costs. A whole village ate fish for a week. A true Legend. Thanks Butch for the Video. And thanks Gunther for a once in a lifetime shot. All caught on Vid.

@ Taylor Dawson: I've done both, trust me this is much harder than bagging a buck. Shooting a big fish like this requires expert level skills. You have to 1) be comfortable diving 10, 15, 20m+ and stay steady comfortably down there as you scope and zero in 2) unlike the buck you have to be able to get close to the fish, which is not easy for big open water fish like tuna, marlin and trevally 3) only a headshot will do, if you don't kill the fish i.e. headshot bye bye speargun. It'll drag you like a horse if you don't let the spear gun go.

i agree with the the conservation aspect of what some people are saying and agree that tuna in general are an overfished group of fish but you have to realize spearfishing is not the problem. when spearfishing there is no by-catch, no waste, and honestly look these guys took one fish. even if they had taken five thats extremely responsible especially when compared to the thousands taken by commercial fisherman. awesome video and great catch, only problem is youll never out do yourself now!

Willownss, I love spearing, it's a a wonderful feeling as a person that eats fish to be able to go into the ocean and catch your meal. I don't appreciate the industrial methods employed to catch fish but that in a way is also necessary. The saddest thing is that nobody is regulating themselves, that and the by product of fishing with nets make fishing sad. A few guys that grouped together and caught 1 fish which they are likely to eat isn't that bad compared to the souless commercial trawling.

That was the first shot placed on the Bluefin Tuna. You can tell this by a) the single spear holding onto the fish b) no other lines/guns floating above the tuna that would show its being held on already Great shot and great footage.

I doubt it. The famous $100,000 tuna you're probably thinking of was bought for many times it's normal value by a couple of crazy sushi chefs. A google search tells me that the average price per kilo for bluefin tuna in Japan is 8000 yen. Which means this tuna is probably worth about 22,000 dollars.

Hey Megalops You almost had it, the tubing is electrical cable! I dont know how high the voltage is but it kills the tuna on the spot. The meat is then unspoiled and of high value. These guys are making money in a very interesting way ( selling to japan probably) Sadly these large tuna are on the decline worldwide. Great vid.

the price often fluctuates wildly and can go from more than $400 per kg all the way down to $4 per kg in a season - it's only the first and finest fish of the season that fetch the top end prices and within a couple days the price is down to half that and after a few weeks you're unlikely to get more than tens of dollars per kg - source: my memory of what I heard a bluefin tuna fisherman say (I play hockey with the guy) I'll actually ask him current prices this year when I see him this weekend

totally depends on the quality of the meat. but i suspect with a instant kill like that, there is no stress to the fish (no burn to the meat) and since its speared in the head, none of the eatable parts are disturbed. Then it would depend on how they handled and stored it from that point on. Cut the gills to bleed it out and ice it as soon as possible. Even with proper handling, it depends on the fish itself, diet, fat content, water conditions, where its caught.

@scoliva I am actually a fisherman. A sustainable fisherman. The statistics of catch and release fishing could be argued all day; deep water fish have a 60% mortality rate while shallow water fish (such as rockfish) have less than a 10% mortality. Properly handling fish and using the proper equipment greatly increases their chances of survival. The fact that you are purposely avoiding is the status of the bluefin tuna...

@pmtad You are right, it is schools of fish. I am not necessarily against spearfishing; I hope to spearfish invasive lionfish sometime in the future. Spearfishing is sustainable in some cases because you can selectively catch fish. My problem with this video concerns the threatened bluefin tuna displayed in this video. Most people understand that the industrial methods of fishing are more destructive than spearfishing. However, spearfishing amounts for a significant..

At the low end price of $15 lbs = $ 8,250.00 At the high end price $22 lbs = $12,100.00. Not bad for a few hours of work. Not sure how long it took him to get it up and onboard the boat.

at the high end 15 bucks? Yeah right that's actually on the high end especially they're probably doing this during the season which means a lot of people are bringing in Fish which drags the price down. if you don't get your fish in first thing I've seen lower-quality Tunas go for as low as 5 6 bucks a pound
@chrrev1
@chrrev1 6 жыл бұрын
on japanese market that would go for 100k
@JonSmith-yq1dw
@JonSmith-yq1dw 6 жыл бұрын
christian revuelta no it wouldn't that would be about $180 a pound dressed at 550 pounds of fish. those articles you see where these giant tuna go for insane sums of money is not the it is clickbait articles that very unreputable news sources like BuzzFeed put in their title to get people to click it since they have no idea about any of the culture, background, what the fish are actually worth, they wouldn't even know the difference between three types of tuna if I put them out in front of them let alone know what to look for in fatty content if I had them all laid up in front of them. in the Japanese culture the first nice fish of the Season that comes in there are certain high-end Sushi chefs that pay a lot more than what it's worth because it's considered a good luck symbol and their name will be plastered on the internet everywhere in these type of BuzzFeed articles and their name will be put in with a title such as one of Japan's best sushi chef or sushi chef blah blah blah whatever his name is. believe me I understand these fish and the market so for you just to throw out $100,000 tells me you have not the slightest clue. Plus they didn't even clean the fish there. all you seen was the pictures of the fish whole. there's no way you can judge it's fatty content and quality just by looking at the fish like that and even if they did cut it up took a tube of flesh out to look at the fat it still would be difficult to know exactly where it would grade without looking at it in person and also knowing how those skills work and what the different grades are and what to look for. when you bring a tuna like that to the Docs they do a few different things to see how the meat is. Weather if it's damaged make sure it's not been out in the sun too long and spoiled to see the fatty content see how the meat is a lot of different things. On the East Coast you could bring in a for 500 pound tuna during season and the price of what you're going to get per pound has a lot of different variables. Fish that are brought in Just That season opens gets a little more because there's not as many coming in at that one time and obviously exactly how much fish are going to come in that season. After that they test it and do a few other things. I've seen tuna during the later parts of the season and that aren't very fatty and of not great quality go for as low as 5 6 7 bucks a pound and the higher-rated quality fish at a beginning of a season go for 25-26 a pound but again that's nowhere close to almost $200 a pound. Again as I stated above in my comment what the reason that you see these really expensive fish get sold in Japan has a reason that these blog news channels don't bother to try to figure out why. Also again you would have no clue of the fatty content and quality of the fish until it was cut open and it was not cut open in this video. It would be like me holding up what appears to be a random sized bar of metal in a picture 50 feet away and you saying oh that is definitely gold and I know the karat of it and I know what the weight of it is. there's no way you can know that unless you had the piece of metal in your hand so you could weigh it, test its Purity and if it's big enough x-ray it to make sure that it's not a cheaper metal that a little bit of gold has been wrapped around.

"We're encouraging more and more people to eat fish. When in fact, the problem is that we're running out of fish and the oceans are dying. There's simply not enough fish in the oceans to continue to feed the ever expanding population of human beings. And what that means is that if the fish disappear the oceans die and when the oceans die civilization collapses and we all die. " - Paul Watson (Sea Shepherd)

The Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus) is a large migratory fish found in the western and eastern Atlantic and the Mediterranean Sea. Bluefin tuna is the source of highest grade sushi. Bluefin tuna fisheries are near collapse and the species at serious risk of extinction if unsustainable fishing practices in the Eastern Atlantic and Mediterranean are not stopped. A temporary ban on the global trade of bluefin tuna would allow the overexploited species to recover.

There are 100s of exercices. I'll name just 1 of the simplest that you can start doing right away,and everyday without even bothering much. That is,as you are walking down de street, imagine a point to wich you want to hold your breath to(a tree,a bus stop,some parked car,a store,some person walking slower than you on a distance)when you've chosen your "target" think(I'm gonna make it)-and believe that) take 3 slow deep breaths and then hold your breath to the desired point.Keep your pace.

There's no point in lying. It's very obvious that you're not a fisherman. The majority of catch and release fisherman don't do it right, in which case 43% of released fish die within 6 days if not handled properly. This man should be an ambassador for sustainable fishing. If everyone fished like him, the issue of declining fish stocks wouldn't exist. Surely you agree with that, but then I'm thinking you won't.

Nice fish! I had heard it's illegal to catch blue fin tuna on spear though...not hating, just asking. There was another spearo who got a thousand pound one off the coast of Nova Scotia or something and there was a big thing about that.

That's a good shot. Can you explain your tactics? Did you incorporate any deflection shooting technique? Have you speared any giant trevally. If yes, how would it compare with tuna? Cheers.
