I give you a year of diving in places like this and you will be the shark whisperer. You will be able to recognize shark behavior better than most and realize the encounter you had with Sir Tiger was special that most never get to experience. Keep diving! BTW....your videography is awesome!!

Absolutely agree, it was awesome!!! Something you will remember all your life. Good that you kept still and in a vertical position. Sharks also afraid of bubbles. All these three things works for you well. Normally sharks do not approach directly, they make circles around, starting from several meters in diameter. This particular approach to you is very rare!!!

1n 1985 was diving off the Jettys in Panama City with a friend who was a dive instructor with 5 open water students doing their skills. The tide started going out pulling all the dirty water out of the bay, 5 feet behind these students that were facing us a 13-foot hammerhead cruised right behind them. He never turned his head or gave any acknowledgement that he even saw them. None of the students saw him, thank goodness, because no doubt we would have had a punch out or two. We quickly gave the thumbs up to get them out of the water. Biggest hammerhead I ever saw in some 35 years of diving and the closest.

Good fun with good people and some absolutely beautiful bottoms. 😄❤

At least it didn't 'make contact'...ever see the vid of that veteran sea urchin diver who dove for over 30 years at the Farallon Islands? He filmed himself as a great white shark just came out of the gloom at literally 'point blank' range, and just bopped him on the top of the head and swam off; The man's seen hundreds of white sharks over the decades (he ended up getting bitten by one in 2017). Let's just say if that shark wanted to do some harm, it was on top of him with virtually no time to react.

Fine speech and visual close to this episode there, guys. Loved it. Someday, soon enough, I'll provide an answer to the challenge in a far differing way. Yet, for now, a few words - suggestions - 1: Dude, you know this - check your six; always. 3-6-9 then you know where. Repeat. Took care of X & Y SitRep, there, but even on land gotta look up and down. You're a diver with a real scary reminder now. Nuff said. 2: I will be watching for it. Find the boat loan. Spear it, Animal. Never stop chasing it till you dine well. 3: Need more crazed chickens about to eat the camera. With deep regards and grins, you two, B Swift 😎🤙

Double check with your welder to make sure that they properly heat treated that part after the weld. The whole part needs to be heated and slowly brought back down to temperature so the stresses of the weld can be dissipated. The welding process without heat treatment can harden most metals making them actually more prone to fracture under loading, losing the parent materials original degree of flex and give (think lexan vs plate glass). Combine any of the usual voids that can occur in a weld with an overly hardened parent material and you will likely lose that weld or crack the quadrant itself. No matter what, you should probably prioritize a longer term fix for that because it may be a ticking time-bomb.

Sheet to Tiller! In An Emergency with a down Auto Pilot. And using the emergency tiller.. Wind Vain steering can be setup with the emergency Tiller, and a couple of bungee cables too the Lee ward side, as the elastic, and a sheet from the main boom through a block on the windward rail, then too a half hitch on the tiller. Lots of trial an error to get it right. Not a bad idea too setup a system when you do not need it couple of cam cleats and depending on your emergency tiller how many blocks to need too make it work, but have used it has a wind vain system for years on my Cape Dory 25 in the 70’s. You can technically make it work on a wheel helm but takes more work..

Engine bolts. They are hardened steal and stronger than normal hardened bolts. Find longer ones so you can use more nuts and washers. I seen this on other sail boats. Once you see those start snapping look at your gears behind your steering wheel. Those usually go about the same time. Sailing Thomas went through the same thing. He had a new setup made for his auto pilot connection and even moved tings a bit to make them stronger. He ordered a new steering gear also which was much thicker than the original one.

I was born and raised in Hawaii and have been surfing, fishing and spearfishing most of my life. I grew up on the North Shore of Oahu in a beach house right at the world famous Banzai Pipeline surf spot! The ocean is what my life has revolved around throughout my life!! I moved to kona on the Big island of hawaii in the mid 70's, and around 1980 I made my dream a reality and had a custom Force 30 fiberglass fishing boat designed and built to my specs for commercial fishing!. Love the videos and the adventure and self sustained lifestyle you guys are living on the ocean!! When I saw the part about the tiger shark encounter, I just wanted to mention how big some of the huge tiger sharks were that I've encountered on my boat in some of the most remote areas off the big island where few boats ever would go and I'd be all by myself where some of the most incredible fishing I've ever experienced was! I noticed that the tiger shark you guys encountered was referenced for size by showing how wide across the top of it's head was. A 15 ft. tiger shark is certainly very large, but I came across a school of around 15 tiger sharks one night while at anchor, because my friend and I had caught a really big Pacific Blue Marlin between 800 and 1000 pounds! We couldn't get it in the boat even with a double block and tackle, so we tied it off the side of the boat, and began the long 1&1/2 day journey back to kona. We had to anchor the first evening, and I pretty much knew that it would likely be eaten by sharks that night. Well that's what ended up happening. But there was one at first, then a second enormous tiger shark and they were swimming right up to the transom of my boat where a light shined into the water, and just stopped on the surface behind the prop and rudder. I could reach over and touch their heads!! Back to that size reference, we'll these two tigers were so big, the top of their heads from basically one eye to the other was from my corner rod holder to the center rod holder. My 30 ft boat has a 10 ft. beam, so the top of these two huge tiger sharks measured 5 feet across, or wide!!!! They were enormous!!! Both did the same thing, and dropped just under the surface and swam from the transom towards the bow. I quickly called out to my friend and told him to carefully go up to the bow of the boat and that I would yell out when the sharks tail was equal with the transom. So I asked him, "where was the head when I called out?" He looked at me in shock and said it was at the tip of the bow!!!!! I've been diving with and doing professional underwater photography and cinematography of sharks and marine mamals for many years, working for marine biologists and national geographic and Discovery Channel. I know the marine biologists say tiger sharks max out at about 18 feet in length, but many of them recognized that people like myself who have spent most of my life at sea, are the ones who encounter and see some of the most amazing things that few have ever seen!!! Just thought you could appreciate just how big a tiger shark is that has a head 5 feet wide across the top!!!! And, yes, it wad 25-30 feet long!!!! I took a lot of pictures that night, but out of respect for the Hawaiian cultural beliefs where sharks are considered "aumakua" or family guardians, I have shared them with very few people!!! I saw 2 others that big over 25+ years commercial fishing, and they are spooky!!!! Glad you are ok!!! Really depends on how sharks are behaving, as often they are just curious and attracted to fish and blood in the water. Live the dream!!! Aloha from Hawaii D.L.

Didn’t get to read all comments but spear fishing always eventually will have a shark story or two and mine involved an 8 ft bull shark in gulf out of Carrabelle Florida in 45 ft of water . He came out of nowhere and had my fish stringer with 2 grouper and 6 big spiny lobster. He had what he came for and I didn’t argue with him. Love your channel and do miss spearfishing . Keep on chasing tail!

I was hoping for some GoPro footage of the shark! Long Island is no joke for sharks. I'm sure you know that though. We were literally run out of the water by a shark at Glenton's reef. We speared one fish and the next thing you know I've got a shark on me. We retreated to the shallows with coral heads all around and wouldn't you know, I look down and it was at my thigh. We kept backing up eventually onto the rocks and the thing kept coming at us all the way to very shallow water. Even our friend Presley Pinder was shocked at the behavior. What a day.
