The big question is...Why was the movie called 'Glitter'?
@JuriAmari6 жыл бұрын
Nicole Batista it’s because of the streak of glitter Billie wears in her performances/outings after she gets famous in her own right. It’s not a stage name and the reason why she starts that fashion trend is never explained. At least with (an IRL example) Michael Jackson’s glitter look you get an adequate explanation - he loved his mother’s glitter jacket and often borrowed it for performances, which then inspired more distinctive looks further into his career. This movie doesn’t even give that! It just puts it there with no introduction to the idea: who did that? Why does she do it? How do we distinguish it from a makeup mistake vs a purposeful statement?
@JuriAmari6 жыл бұрын
I think they were also trying to give a vibe similar to Sparkle with a 1 word shiny title and one of those bottom to the top stories. Billie starts off as a backup singer and then becomes famous in her own right within a big concert at the finale after a bout of tragedy.

Oh god, I had forgotten about the telepathic songwriting scene. Even at 17 when I saw this in the theater (dragging in two unsuspecting straight friends who I don't think ever quite forgave me) and thought it was a good movie, that scene took me out of it. What bothers me the most about "Glitter" is not even its many clichés and vanity project symptoms (because bad films made by superstars surrounded by yes-people was already nothing new by then), but how badly it managed to fuck up a basic story of someone succeeding in the music business. Billie goes from nothing to having one single (which probably didn't get a video because they walked out of the shoot) to... selling out Madison Square Garden? In what, a month? That sounds like an outsider's view of how "overnight success" in music happens, not how it actually happens, and the movie has no excuse for that when it's *made by an actual music superstar*. Worse, one who was herself a star who rose exceptionally fast, and even then it took about two years from her being introduced to Tommy Mottola to the release of "Vision of Love". I'd forgive the saccharine stuff about the mom, but not the film's bizarrely surface-level understanding of how a singer becomes famous.

I actually like the soundtrack of this movie. I know the movie itself is crap, though.
@Musicradio77Network8 жыл бұрын
+amyrat151 I actually have the soundtrack, but there was one song on that album was a remake of a 1983 dance classic "Last Night A DJ Saved My Life" which was first done by Indeep, and then one of the songs from that soundtrack was also a remake of Cherrelle's 1984 dance classic "I Didn't Mean to Turn You On" which was later became a hit for Robert Palmer 2 years later in 1986. The soundtrack was good. If you look back at soundtracks to bad movies, take "Xanadu" for example, it was a really bad movie from 1980 with Olivia Newton-John, they also had a soundtrack to a bad movie and had two of the songs from that soundtrack including "Magic", a big hit for her, and then "Suddenly" with Cliff Richard, and the title song with the Electric Light Orchestra. I guess 1980 would be a bad year for movie musicals. "Xanadu" was bad, "Can't Stop the Music" was garbage which was their attempt for a feature film with the Village People, and of course "The Apple", that was really bad, because the movie was set in 1994, the songs aren't that great. I rather take those movies any day now than watching this one. And don't forget "Hannah Montana: The Movie", that was bad, and Todd in the Shadows did reviewed it not too long ago. They also had a soundtrack to that bad movie, but some of the songs were good, but they throw in two country songs by Rascal Flatts, and one song by Billy Ray Cyrus. Those three songs were good, but the rest of the songs from soundtrack aren't that great except "The Climb" which was her first single and it became a big hit.

I don’t think Mariah singing so bombastically is inherently a problem but relative to the songwriting on her albums, it can sometimes be seen as over singing, if only because the songs don’t always compliment her singing style well. By this, I mean that often, her voice will completely overshadow every other element of a track when ideally, the latter should reinforce the former. Basically, the problem isn’t that her vocals are too skillful but that the songwriting can’t keep up, and so the songs often end up sounding lopsided and clumsy

Here's what I'd do if I wrote Glitter: 1. Have another love interest. To me, Billie Frank meets an old childhood friend named Lloyd Stevens who's got a metal band and is a pro wrestler and is played by Chris Jericho. Billie and Lloyd have a much more fun relationship and we get an alternate ending which I'll explain in my last idea 2. The time setting will be in the late 90s or early 2000s which makes better sense of the clothes, trends and music 3. Have normal and less "in your face editing" 4. Have a video game adaptation on every game console at the time of 2001 including a GameCube and Xbox launch title 5. In the start of the movie, a young Billie met a young Lloyd the same time Billie's mom Lillian was performing at the bar and Lloyd's mom is also a musician but a rockstar instead of an R&B singer. That's how they became friends because both their moms are musicians and they inherit their mothers' talents 6. Billie has an inner conflict on choosing between Dice and Lloyd 7. Lloyd is a fun carefree metal head and a larger than life wrestler that entertains his many fans and has a healthier relationship with Billie 8. Billie's Foster friends also met Lloyd when they were young and even they preferred Billie to be with Lloyd instead of Dice 9. Dice sees Lloyd wrestle and isn't impressed as he's not only jealous of Lloyd's popularity and taking Billie away from him but also he's not a fan of pro wrestling 10. Now there's the movie's two endings. Spoiler Alert for those of you who watched the original Glitter. The first ending is the same as the original lukewarm and bittersweet ending. Billie stays with Dice and Timothy shoots Dice and Billie performs on her show dedicating to Dice and reunites with her mother. The alternate ending is more uplifting and also action packed. Billie stays with Lloyd. Timothy shoots Dice but only in the arm and survives but Lloyd fights Timothy and saves the day. Timothy gets arrested and is sent to federal prison meanwhile Dice redeemed himself and thanks Lloyd for saving him and accepts Lloyd being with Billie. Dice remains friends with Billie and gets hospital treatment and watches Billie's performance on Pay-per-view in the hospital. The performance has Billie bring Lloyd as a surprise and they do a rock ballad with a little R&B and metal to contrast the two characters and once again Billie reunites with her mother but Lloyd's with her and they are engaged with rings and Billie is pregnant with twins. It's a proper happily ever after where Billie is married and having kids with a new man while being a singing sensation. That is my version of Glitter. What do you think? Is it too cheesy? Is Chris Jericho not the right choice as another guy for Mariah Carey's other onscreen love interest in Glitter?

@@edwardphilibin3151 She should've gone with Tina Turner's What's Love Got To Do With It? . That song would actually fit the mood of the movie and make sense within its context because its about finding your own way and being true to yourself. Failing that maybe Private Dancer would've worked too. That being said I also feel the same way about whitney huston's cover of I Will Always Love You, only in her case I find that she severely over sings it and that completely takes away from the real emotional weight of the song. When I hear dolly's version it almost moves me to tears because she sells the emotion of telling someone that she truly loves that she has to leave them forever, when I hear whitney huston's version I think "musical stunt casting" and when I hear mariah's version I want to shove gauze in my ears.

It's not so much "goodbye forever" as its a deeply heartfelt "thank you from the bottom of my heart for everything you've done for me and I'll never forget you". The story dolly tells is that she wrote the song just before she told porter that she wanted to move on to the next step in her career and they finally had the conversation then she played the demo for him and he was moved to tears by it. After regaining his composure proter told her that she was free to go on the condition that she would work with him one last time too record that song because he knew it would be a hit and wanted their last collaboration too be something that was as beautiful as possible. He said many years later that of all the hit songs he worked on that one meant the most to him because while it was the swansong of their cloaborative efforts it was also the beginning of the blossoming dolly's career as a solo artist. 16:23 He walked up TO the gun before getting shot with it! You all saw that, right? Yeesh, this was less a movie and more of an ego stroke for Carey. Even more so than Christina Aguilera's "Burlesque".

The film itself actually was not that satisfying,for its script&transition&pace,or more fundamentally,for characters' poor acting skills.However,as a mariah's fan,I appreciate the soundtrack so much,though kinda style was different from her previous ones to a certain extent.

Okay. This is a weird movie 😕

You'd think that after this spectacular failure that Mariah Carey would have come out of it humbler and more mature. Nope, one successful album later followed by a bunch of mediocre ones and she was right back to being completely up her own ass. I don't think her vocal skills are overrated but her personality just strikes such a sour note for me and makes it hard for me to enjoy any of her music.

My feelings exactly. She's a technically gifted vocalist but she's so arrogant it's damn near impossible for me to take her music seriously.

@@Missjunebugfreak How is she arrogant?
@qty13153 жыл бұрын
@@Missjunebugfreak Thinking on it, maybe her arrogance is a defence mechanism? Looking at vocal forums, people with wide ranges that like to show off often receive the most criticism. Mariah probably had to deal with people her entire life telling her to stop showing off her range, oversinging, and a bunch of other criticisms. If no one will support you or motivate you, then you have to do it yourself. If no one loves you, you'll just have to love yourself extra hard and ignore the haters. Unfortunately, that leads to narcissism when it goes too far. It's why the most talented artists are the most toxic and have the biggest egos.
