Funny. My stepdad is a former PJ. He sent nearly three years in Vietnam and was the very first Air Force member to attend the Green Beret Recondo school. He was also the last PJ NCOIC in Vietnam who closed the PJ section in Danang I think. One DFC and 13 Air medals are some of his decorations. He has been a hero to me since I was five years old. I remember those men as being larger than life and now as an elderly adult still believe they are. The sacrifices made by our military personnel and their families is hard to comprehend unless you’ve walked that road. God Bless each and every one of you. Because of you, we have the lives we have. I’m afraid that point is going to be emphatically made over the next few years. Footnote: He may have been responsible for some green feet appearing on the side of a certain A-1 flown by a certain Future MOH winner that landed him the coveted position of closing down the section. There was never any proof, just ill founded suspicion 😏

Did some training years back with Navy Special Boat guys in their Mk 5 SOC boats. We were doing zodiac launch and recovery ops and such. They told us how it was working with Army SF (us), Navy SEALS, and MARSOC. They said the Army SF guys brief what they're going to train, and then train to their brief. SEALs will do the training and if one guy drives the boat onto the Mk 5 ramp, then every SEAL in the boat is considered "trained." The Marines train until they hurt someone.

I'm a civilian pogue, so no one in the the special ops cares much what I think, but an old pal of mine was retired U.S. Army Special Forces. He used to rib the Navy SEALS by saying that their badge should be a representation of a holster with a hairdryer in it! By implication, not the 'Budwiser' or trident. He would always pause to pay tribute to Navy Corpsmen, though, and remind listeners that one had saved his bacon back in the sandbox. He would always go on to say that they did the same in return and it was always good fun, no big deal. When you are in the fraternity, you can roll that way... but when the bad guys show up, they're united to kick butt and take names. Very cool as a military historian to get an occasional peak behind the curtain. Stuff you would never see/hear in civilian life.

What makes them special operations, and what exactly distinguishes them from other infantry units?
@frankm29115 ай бұрын
Not SOF but certainly SOF capable and support SOF all the time incl assaulting and holding/ surrounding objectives while SOF incl the unit do the specialty work. Highly motivated, fit, disciplined, better training better equipment. It all makes them better.
