I also have emetophobia, but it's more about others who vomit. I tell people "you could throw a grenade in a room or have someone in a room throw up and my reaction will be the same". When I get sick, I don't get afraid of myself, but I project my phobia onto others and I have to isolate myself entirely in order to get sick and I get severe anxiety if I'm not alone. I know it's irrational but it started in 1st grade and I struggled for many years! My brother got car sick growing up and my dad lived 2 hours away and we visited every weekend. You can imagine how much anxiety I had every Friday and Sunday

I’m grateful to you, Jess and her partner for spreading awareness about OCD and Emetophobia. I would like to add however that it’s okay too if you do want to push towards recovery or improvements in your condition. I have had OCD, Emetophobia and an eating disorder for most of my life (Emetophobia 30+ years and ED 20+years). Only now am I realising how amazing the human brain is. I’ve been reading so much about neural rewiring and neuroplasticity. By constantly challenging our thoughts and exposing ourselves to triggers I am starting to believe that things can change quite dramatically. Of course it takes time and a whole lot of commitment - and I’m nowhere near ‘recovered’ yet BUT for 30 years I’ve truly believed that nothing could get better… I just wanted to share this because we are all on our own journeys and some people are okay with living within the walls of their phobias/thoughts (I’ve been this way most of my life too) but there is also hope for people who want to change or improve. Hope it’s okay to share this. Full respect to Jess and her partner and love and compassion to anyone going through similar things.

Phobias are based on a fear of loss of control. People just choose their poison. This is why phobias are sometimes transient. This means, that when one phobia is overcome, sometimes its replaced with another. They are not treating the actual problem. This is why you have to focus on allowing for the "loss of control". In order to do this, you have to give up on the control of any given situation. The safety net that will always be "in your control" is that you are allowing for the loss of control. This will give your mind the "safe space" it's seeking without having to run from the situation.

She's not perfect now, but she's about 90% better, and much more functional. She can think herself out of most triggers for her pretty quickly, and most of the things that made her feel sick and worry about throwing up, no longer trigger her. It took several years to get to that point though.

I used to be emetophobic as a kid. Now I couldn't be more the opposite. I think the turning point for me was the last time I threw up which was when I was 12. Up to that point I'd always seen vomiting as the worst thing EVER but that time it wasn't so bad. I didn't feel that overly nauseous and unlike previous times, I just let myself throw up instead of trying to hold it in (which is another reasons why the previous experiences were so awful). I think the fact that the experience wasn't so bad lessened my fear and from that point onwards the fear just subsided to the point where I could say I'm on the other end of the spectrum now.
