Great video man! I made a similar comment to kpaceguy - I think a more apples:apples comparison would be the AV8805 as they have the same DAC’s, whereas the 7706 has a lower SNR DAC (AKM4458). The 8805 and the AVM70 are pretty much on par in terms of specs, but on paper, the AVM70 is a smokin deal for $1k less than the 8805, and with a first class room correction software (even though it doesn’t work currently). For some, the OSD of the Marantz unit alone, may just be worth it. I run the 8805 and haven’t found the “gotta have it” jump to another unit, not yet anyway. Great video as always!
@chriswyatt98683 жыл бұрын
I agree. A better comparison would of been the AV8805. I also own the AV8805 and so far after two and a half years still don't have an urge to replace it. I also like the Marantz look over that new Anthem.

The AV7706 has a similar DAC chipset as the Anthem MRX 540-1140 AVR's. I'm not too surprised that the AVM70 edged out on clarity and channel separation as it has a superior multi DAC implementation. A better challenge would be the Marantz AV8805, Rotel 1576MKII or NAD M17v2.

That seems to be a logical comparison, especially with the release of the Marantz AV8805A. Moreover, Anthem just raised the price of the AV70 by $300 and did not include any new features. The Marantz will only process 13 channels at any one time though, whereas the Anthem processes all 15. It’s for this reason that I’m looking to upgrade from my 8805 to an AVM 70, as I’m already at my max speaker count with the Marantz (9.2.4), and want to move to 9.2.6 - which the Anthem will allow. The only viable alternative (in the U.K.) would be the Trinnov - and I can’t justify that outlay on what is, to me, a minor hobby - besides which, I’ll have had enough of building yet more speakers! 17, including subs, is more than enough! - though can’t recommend DIYSG speakers highly enough!

Late update here, but I noticed at 2:20 that the Anthem microphone is pointing backwards, toward your chair, instead of pointing forward as it is supposed to be. There is a white decal/dot on the microphone that indicates where you point it toward the front of the room. If you did do your measurements with the microphone in the wrong orientation as shown, you/we should disregard your measurements and totally disregard your overall assessment and review resulting from that setup - Or - perhaps this photo was just for reference, and you did indeed have the microphone set correctly. Nonetheless, the picture indicates incorrect positioning.

Are you able to make any observations or comments even though AVM90 is not yet released (and that it may be delayed from March to Fall later this year)? My opinion on the matter is this, if money is no object the AVM90 would be my choice, if money is an issue the AVM70 I am sure will give you 80 to 90% of what the AVM90 gives you.

Got a MRX 740 and had the same problems, plus, going back to do a new calibration I was told by Anthem, required a "system reset" thereby losing all my saved settings. I have one glitch I haven't been able to figure out. Occasionally when watching TV channels, the voice track disappears entirely, both on main programming and commercials. I tried different profiles, and different theater settings to no avail. I suppose this could be the Verizon STB but rebooting all equipment corrected it the last time I experienced it. I am comming from Marantz, bought the JBL Synthesis SDP-55. And also calibrated (mostly manually) an Anthem 740. This is how my list goes. 1.JBL since I am used to Dirac, its more detailed and I like it, also the pre-amp is a awesome. But yes it waaay more expensive. I have never heard sourround sound like this, only on a trinnov (yes its better). 2. Anthem 740, wow here you get ALOT for the money, what a beast, what a performer! 3. The Marantz 7-series peramp is dissapointing in my opinion, its not bad. But for the money I say Anthem delivers way more then it costs! The Marantz is easy to operate, it does what its supposed to. But I cant go back to it and enjoy it. Nice video been looking forward to it :). And btw ARC is not bad for being in a beta, its does a pretty good job as it is now.

Very nice comparison but to me it’s unacceptable to spend my money on a buggy product with so many shortcomings such as Anthem. The very slim difference in sound quality are well outperformed by a much more robust platform with buttoned up software and OSD found on Marantz. I bet that the sound comparison will change after calibration. I have always witnessed great differences in my system which I tested when upgrading items before and after running Audyssey with big improvement after calibration. Even my wife noticed and learned about the importance of it. Definitely not sold on Anthem and fully agree with your comment on their failure to deliver. So far I haven’t been impressed with any of what I consider second rank pre/pros such as Arcam, Anthem, Monoprice, Emotiva, etc. All of them commanding high Dollars for subpar buggy products. Ultimately we’re pursuing better sound which in my opinion is achieved through a combination of many variables where working software, polished OSD and room correction play an essential role in our user experience.

Well the Anthem AVM70 is a very nice unit when mine was working for a month. The auto update worked but mine "glitched" on the firmware auto update and does not turn on anymore. Anthem will warranty it but I have been (since 4-23-2021) trying to get the papers from Anthem on the RMA but emails & phone calls are becoming no response on emails or Covid 19 recordings on the phone que. Warranty maybe an issue here guys? While it worked I had all 15.2 working and it sounded amazing. Anthem told me it would be 4 to 6 weeks for this to be fixed but I have already lost another week just trying to get the paper work returned to me?

Does the Anthem have an analog pass-through? On my Marantz 7703, that can be accomplished by connecting LR through the 7-channel bypass LR inputs, which seems to get around the digital processing, and it thereby sounds decent, even if it bypasses the subs. On my older Onkyo this can easily be achieved via “Pure Direct” mode, which sounds better than the Marantz, subjectively. Thoughts on this? So sad about the missing tape loops on these newer units, BTW. I’m sure I’m not the only one.

I have an old Marantz 7010 from about 5 years ago, pushing my Golden Ear setup and my dual Rythmik FV18s. I have been thinking about pulling the trigger soon on an AVR 70 with a new set of amps... you’re pushing me inch by inch that direction. But its going to be expensive to make the jump from a receiver to separates, as I am also going to have to buy a new AV cabinet to house it all as well. Anyone have the experience of how big a jump it is in channel separation and clarity between the Marantz AVRs and an Anthem pre-pro? You said the difference between your Denson and Marantz Pre-pro was pretty significant.

Question. I watch TV a bunch on my system but hesitate to look at Anthem or Audio Control because of the Marantz quickly going from the different audio formats on TV. Marantz handles it flawlessly and quickly. Is that your experience as well with the Anthem unit? Very slow to change audio formats? I heard XMC-1 Emotiva is very slow as well.
@SpecOfTech3 жыл бұрын
Actually my Anthem operates quite smooth now, there were some bugs in the beginning. Switching between inputs happens quite quickly, and without issues. If you are looking for fluid operation, I would stay clear of the Emotivas. They do sound fantastic, but their firmware is buggy and slow.

I was considering these two brands to upgrade from when my new home finishes getting built in June. I was already leaning towards Anthem from the start, now this helps confirm / solidify my selection going forward as Audio Advice really loves the Anthem as well. Since I’m having a home theater room being build from scratch, I’m in no rush and ARC should be ironed out by then as well as other bugs. My only question on the HDMI 2.1 upgrade path, how will they handle that? Force you to buy a whole new unit? Or send it in for the hardware upgrade to the board? Or will it be modular in a way for self hardware upgrade? They know we all want it, and talking Full HDMI 2.1 with 48 Gb support, not the halfassed version that caused issues with Xbox on Denon and other early HDMI 2.1 units.
