Great video again guys. I absolutely love my 2020 SL5 Domane with the following upgrades. I have the Aeolus Pro 37 TLR rims, 28mm Conti GPX 5000 TR's, SRAM Rival AXS eTap, ENVE SES AR Road bars (38mm), Zipp Service Course Bar Tape, Selle Italia Model X Green Seat. I am 59 in good shape and don't race but am always wanting to improve my speed and performance. I do admit I periodically wonder if I should I have bought the Emonda or is the Domane more my jam. First world problems I suppose lol. After having the bike since 2020 I have evolved to only wanting to road ride. My bike weighs in at 20.9 pounds built up this way. Not the lightest but I am no pro so there's that. I've always said too many people focus too much on a couple of pounds when they could eat better and shave the weight instead. I have a lot of climbing here in upstate NY and after only road riding for 2 years I can have an average moving speed of 15-16 mph on a 30-35 mile winter ride with 2000-3500 feet of climbing so I don't think the Domane is holding me back terribly. It is a better bike than I am rider if you know what I mean. I guess the comfort helps me ride stronger, longer so that equals speed in a way. I also absolutely love the hidden down tube storage and clip that goes under the seat for the light to keep the bike clean looking without a seat bag or light strapped to the seat tube. I have never test ridden an Emonda and maybe it's best I don't. Not in a position to lose money on the bike I have just to spend more money for a bike I don't. My wife says I'm never satisfied with what I have. She is right but that is the obsession I have with the sport. I guess there are worse things to be addicted too lol.

I have dozens of friends in New York, the NYPD Cycling team, and all over the east coast; several have to Domane and love it. @@GetOutArizona Great videos guys! its the best video i found on the 2023 SL5 comparisons. After watching a few of your compare videos, i think the Domane edges out both the Emonda & Checkpoint as i do mostly roads here in Upstate NY (same as Jeff), but some of the roads are a little rough in the back roads of the country (little gravel & not smooth), that my current older Specialized Allez hasnt been able to handle that great. 2 questions:1) there are a lot of hilly roads where i am at- would you still recommend the Domane in the SL class compared to Checkpoint and Emonda? 2) not sure how familiar you are with the Allez (circa 2014), but would you consider it a significant upgrade (due to carbon, comfort, etc)?

​@@rjames5128 Great question, James. Thank you for taking the time to ask. 2014 Allez, that's going back a bit, lol. So, I know a majority of the NYPD cycling team and more than 200 riders from the Tri-State area. The ones that have purchased the Domane have bought the SL5, except a few that sprung for SRAM AXS and the SLR series. None of them are disappointed, and they ride wherever the day takes them. I have the Checkpoint SL5 but will also have the Domane SL5 by mid-Summer. I plan on using the Doamne for all my road and canal riding needs. I hope these answers were helpful to you, James. Good comparison this guys. I’ve got an Emonda SL6 Pro and a Domane AL5 as a wet/winter bike. I think I prefer the Domane’s geometry overall but I’ve had the first ride of the year on my SL6 and you can really feel the difference between the two but I still think the Emonda is a great bike, I’ve just put some Bontrager Elite 50’s on it as well so it’s a fast bike.

Considered the Domane because i was nervous with all the comfort talk that riding 20 miles on the Emonda would be brutal..... but i really really really want that extra speed potential.

I think you would be surprised at how fast the Domane is. As long as your rides are shorter than 40-50 miles, I don't think the Emonda would give you comfort issues as much as you would think. Great video guys. I’m an owner of a trek domane sl5 2022. I’ve upgraded the wheel set to Zipp 303s with 28c Pirelli zeros to improve speed and weight. But I’m really regretting buying a domane over the emonda. I’m only 34 so shouldn’t of gone for comfort 😂. I rushed into buying the domane because of the shortage of road bikes in my local trek store. If I was to swap for a emonda now I’d lose quite a bit of money 👎🏻

Hey Michael, sorry for the delay in responding to your comment. I spent approximately 12 hours traveling back home yesterday and didn’t have an opportunity for a complete answer. That being said, you are never too young to enjoy the befits of comfort an endurance bike offers, lol. Seriously though, a lot of people went with bikes that were the second choice due to shortages, but you have built an awesome bike, my friend. If anything, I would purchase a preowned Emonda to complement the Domane or even a Madone if the budget permits. This way, you have two great bikes to choose from, depending on the ride and mood. I want to ride for 1-1.5 hours per day during the week and 4-5 hours on the weekends… all road, no gravel. I keep hearing that Emonda are pretty uncomfortable on century rides and double centuries but would appreciate others’ opinions

Great question, Alex. Thank you for taking the time to ask. I personally start to feel the differences between the two bikes at the two-hour mark. At this point, my preference would go to the Domane. I have two friends that prefer the Emonda, though, for all their riding needs. However, they both have a thinner, more bikers build than I do.

I came from a chinese brand racing bike that I have been riding for two years and I recently bought the EMonda with a offset seat post. The emonda feels so relaxed IMO and it doesn't feel aggresive at all. I'm also wondering why people would buy carbon frames/carbon handlebars for the stiffness and yet use isospeed.

These are two great questions, my friends, and thank you for taking the time to ask them. Firstly, I am happy to hear the Emonda fits you so well. Different frame sets will accommodate different people differently. As far as the use of carbon fiber on the frame and handlebars in conjunction with the ISO speed. The ISO speed is meant to act as a pseudo-suspension for more aggressive terrains. This allows the rider the benefit of additional comfort on longer rides. The stiffness of the carbon fiber helps additionally by reducing the low-frequency vibrations that have a cumulative effect on the rider over water distances. Not to mention greater power transfer for maximum efficiency. I hope these answers were a benefit to you, my friend. Thank you again for taking the time to watch our video and ask your questions. Going to buy 1 of these 2 bikes in a few months. My first real bike is a 2023 trek fx2 disk and am looking to add to or upgrade. I will test ride both but had a question. What do people mean a bike is faster? Is it based on how agressive the rider position is? And if so is that due to wind and aero or is the angle you pedal at affected?

Typically, it's the geometry of the bike, the aggressiveness of the stance, and the ease with which it pedals and rockets out of the corners. For example, the Madone SL7 is a ridiculously fast bike. If you pedaled that bike with the same effort you would a Checkpoint or Domane, you'd notice it. I love my checkpoint, and I'm sure I will love my Domane as well, but I will own a Madone SLR 6 so I can go wicked fast with my roadie friends. I hope this answer is helpful to you, my friend. I currently ride a 2015, Domane. I’m looking at switching to an Emonda. I’ve been fine with my Domane and I am not against getting another one, but I am interested in a lighter bike and more help with climbing. The roads where I ride are a mixed bag of occasional smooth asphalt, rough asphalt, and heavy chip seal, so I appreciate the comfort of the IsoSpeed at the seat post. I’m concerned about losing that comfort, but I am not sure of how much difference I will notice if I switch to an Emonda. Depending on my schedule and time of year, I typically ride between 200 and 350 miles per week. I’m feeling slightly overwhelmed by this decision. I wish I could predict how my body would feel following a 90 to 100 mile ride on the Emonda compared to the Domane. Any feedback would be appreciated.

My friend, I apologize for the delay in my response. Here is my opinion. Since the Emonda is no longer available and carbon, I would be leery about choosing that over the Domane from a comfort standpoint based on the type of terrain that you ride. Now, if you can find a preowned Emonda that is carbon fiber, you could put a slightly wider tire in it to help absorb some of the low-frequency vibrations. However, I can tell you that the new generation Domane is so nice that I would be hard-pressed to choose anything else at this point. I hope this helps you in making your selection. My question is: how much faster is Emonda? Let's say on Iron Man (180 km). Will I gain a few minutes, half an hour, or more?

Given the variables at play, how much faster would be subjective and difficult to predict. Who is the rider? What kind of shape are they in? Is it their best or worst race day? What are the conditions? Are they ideal with a tailwind, or are they horrific in every way? When Brandon and I talk about a bike being faster, we are referring to a few factors, which include efficiency, responsiveness, weight, and of course, the most important one, the rider’s capability. An average rider will be more efficient on an Emonda, which in turn equals a time saving, but their returns will be limited to some of the above-mentioned variables. I have several bikes, and some rides are just slower than others because of the ride, conditions, me, etc. I do apologize for my soliloquy. I assure you I am not attempting to be ambiguous with my answer. This is a factual statement when we say the Emonda is a faster bike than the Domane. How much faster depends on all the variables I have stated above. If you are capable of riding in an Iron Man, I am confident that your gains will be more substantial than mine could ever be. So, this is a great question, and I thank you for asking. The riders I know, who wanted additional speed from their Domane, changed out the wheelset to something lighter and more nimble. According to them, this helped the climbs a great deal. However, for the riders, I know that own both, they said this still did not change the fact the Emonda, overall, was superior out of the corners and climbing. Both groups agree, though, that consistently over 50 miles, go with the Domane. Constantly under 40 miles, go with the Emonda. That gray area is personal preference/choice. Hi guys! Thank you for the video! With 2 sprint triathlons completed on a mountain bike, I am fairly new to the sport but am looking to make my first bike purchase. I am stuck between a domane Sl5 or a straight up road race bike to use in future tri’s. My fear is putting a lot of money into my first bike that is fast and will allow me to shave a few minutes off my time, but will not be able to handle the day to day abuse of the beat up roads I ride on. Any advice you guys may have?

First, thank you for watching our video and taking the time to ask your question. Both are appreciated. Here is what I would suggest. Purchase a Domane SL5 and then buy a wheel set for speed but use the stock set for everyday use until it's time to replace it. When race day comes, swap rims, kick some butt, then go back to the everyday set. I personally know a couple of riders who do this and are quite pleased. This is also the route I will probably take unless Trek gives me a Gen 7 Madone, lol. I hope this answer is helpful for you. Again, thank you for the support and adventure safely.

No, the Emonda definitely rides faster than the Checkpoint. However, the Checkpoint is on pace with the Domane with the same tires and rim set. Hey daze, thanks for watching and asking your question. Typically we say that the best upgrade for an entry-level to intermediate-level bike is a better wheelset. This, in turn, includes new hubs. A performance hub set will offer lighter weight, optimum performance, and increased durability. This translates to greater efficiency, which leads to an optimal ride experience. Of course, there are other mitigating factors to this equation, but starting with your wheelset/hub set is a great place to start. I hope this answer is helpful to you.
