Synthetic oil and mostly highway trips (so at full operating temp) definitely helps to get that far! I agree that certain engines IF built right and taken care of right will go a long time, but there comes a point where you see too many cars going through 3-4 engines on people for it to not be the fault of the manufacturer as well. That being said, my one and only Hyundai had 680k on the clock (km) on it's second engine and original trans (2nd clutch). It was a diesel H1 with the Mitsu based 4D motor though. I was attracted to the fact that it has a full-sized spare (a deal breaker for me) and that it comes with a 7 year warranty. I'm selling it with 2 years of the factory warranty still remaining. I'm very impressed with the tyres and brakes that comes with the Kia Sportage. I just put on 4 new tyres today, the first tyre change in 92,000 km! All my previous tyres on other vehicles only lasted 62,000 km! I've never had to replace the brake pads. The mechanic told me that there's still plenty of brake pads left. I've never had a vehicle in the past that's lasted >92,000 km without a brake pad change (my wife's a nervous driver so she's always on the brakes).

The conrods are press fit in style so they don't need circlips to hold them like freefloating rods. My friend who's a kia/hyundai service tech says his shop is down to 1 and a half hours on subframe, engine and transmission drop on almost all their fwd/awd models because they do so many of them. Their motors just don't last even with oil changes at the correct interval and any extension to the interval just shortens their life even more. I've also been told by the same guy that the aftermarket oil filter scene for these engines isn't trustworthy and that is contributing to engine failure, even if you do the change yourself get filters from a dealer.

Thanks for sharing an interesting and informative video. I've got a 2016 Kia Soul (base model, 1.6 L, 6-speed manual) with a GDI engine. Even though I'm not a "typical" Kia owner (and actually check & top-up my engine's oil and have it changed regularly), I gained a new perspective on the importance of frequent oil changes for Kia GDI engines. Apparently the GDI engines are more prone to oil issues than the 2000 Hyundai Elantra (wagon) 2.0L engine that I owned in the past.

a very good show & tell explanation...thank you now...I AM an average Kia owner, '23 Soul with mpfi 2.0, and I do check my oil...every 2-3 weeks! I currently have 9.7k miles and am approaching my 2nd oil change...dealer urges a 5k mile OCI using expensive full synthetic 0w-20 oil which is under utilized for such a short OCI I can understand why owners push extended OCI's on these...when you spec full synthetic 0w-20 full synthetic and urge 5,000 mile oil changes, people get upset when charged $75-100+ per oil change! 5,000 mile rated oil falls in the category of 'conventional' or 'synthetic blend' and the oil changes usually cost less; spec full synthetic oil and urge OCI's for 5k miles is a waste of money & resources...full synthetic oil is formulated for higher mileage OCI's; 7k miles is still low, but better than 5k miles! even Subaru's 6k OCI is low for the capability of the oil! respec the engine for 5w-20 conventional or synthetic blend & 5k mile OCI's are justified!

I've got a 2014, hyundai accent with the 1.6 GDI engine. You must change the oil every 3 to 4k miles and use ONLY OEM oil filters from the dealer. They are designed to deliver oil quickly during startups. These engines have WEAK oil pumps and its a must to keep cleaner oil in them and these oil filters. I have 180k miles and use around a pint of oil between 3500 mile oil changes.

I think the only bad design in this engine is the Gasoline direct injection and skipping of some extras. Otherwise its a simple solid design if taken care of it can run a lot.
@Peppermint1 Жыл бұрын
To eliminate the carbon build up problem, Hyundai decided to run very rich fuel-air mixture at cold starts (both summer and winter). This has unburnt gasoline coating the combustion chamber which stops carbon build up on intake valves. Downside, unburnt gasoline also leaks into the engine oil past compression rings, causing engine oil dilution - the engine oil is loosing its lubricating properties. This is mostly a problem when doing mostly short trips when the oil doesn't get hot enough to have gasoline evaporated.
@dbzownz12345 Жыл бұрын
would "warming up" the car for 5-7 minutes + 5 minute drive help to elimate that? My trips are short to work, so all I can really do is warm her up prior to driving. I could also use my other car for my short trips & use newer Kia for night job more driving
@Peppermint1 Жыл бұрын
@@dbzownz12345 Hi, no, it will not be enough. In fact, letting the engine idle means engine is running on lower oil pressure (the lower the rpm, the lower the oil pressure, the oil pump works with the engine rpm). So lower oil pressure + diluted oil = not good. For short trips, the easier thing to do is change oil no longer than 4000 miles and use synthetic 5W-30 (note, if changing from non-synthetic to synthetic on high mileage car, the engine will start consuming lots of oil for the first 10,000 miles or so, need to check oil level every day at first). If using car very little, change oil every 6 months. A second problem with these engines is they run at very low 1000 rpm at specific cruising speeds such as 20, 30 and 45mph. At 1000 rpm the oil pressure is very low increasing the wear on connecting rod bearings. If driving at speeds allowing 1000 rpm, downshift manually to keep the rpm above 1500 rpm. Note the engine failures are only for GDI engines made from 2011-2019. I will upload next spring a video with a trick to save these engines, I did discover a trick to stop the oil dilution.

@@Peppermint1 thanks for the info. I've heard the newer Theta II engines are better overall, but I always plan on oil changes of 4k or less. First is 1.2k (some say 500 miles is best), 3k next, & 4k therafter. IS this a good idea for brand new car voyage on oil changes? thanks.
@Peppermint1 Жыл бұрын
@@dbzownz12345 I think it's a good idea to do an early oil change on new cars. New engines have various assembly lubricants that will get washed by the engine oil, so an early change will help remove these residues. May also help remove wear particles on new engine during break-in. Most these particles will get trapped inside the oil filter, but smaller ones may accumulate inside the oil, so a first oil change around 1500 miles may help with these. I would also suggest remembering the brake fluid change every 4 years even when driving low miles. This will help extend the life span of the brake caliper as I noticed Hyundai is using low quality caliper piston seals, which start sticking after 7-8 years. In fact, the brakes are a weak point on these cars, brakes are made by some Korean company, may see my other videos about brake quality on Hyundai and Kia cars. I'd use Dot 4 synthetic brake fluid (for European cars) on these vehicles

I'm amazed at the failure level reported in the US. Here in Australia they are generally considered a very reliable product. Our service requirements are 10,000km for the turbo petrol engines and 15,000km for the NA petrol and Diesel. Most of our KIA and Hyundai models are Korean made with some European produced. I have noticed there is a distinct quality difference with the US built Toyota Highlander or Kluger as it is called here compared to the Japanese made Rav 4 and wonder if the Hyundai models built in the US are using inferior quilt materials.
@Tingtong-gg5oe2 жыл бұрын
The fail rate in America is because they manufacture it themselves Kia and Hyundai and they have different engines fit for them in America. But Kia and Hyundai primary market is in asia and Europe . They get the cars from either European plant or Korean and the cars are some of the most reliable in the word. The problem is only in USA their plant and engine type is different from the rest of the world but it’s not with everyone most people in the states are satisfied with the brands.

The directed injection system tends to allow gasoline to get in the pan and dilute the oil. That combined with the very thin 5-20 oil used in these engines is what diminishes the oils ability to lubricate. Extended oil change intervals do not help this situation. 10-30 and 10-40 oil is allowed by Kia and is a better choice than 5-20.
