If you could only choose one softbox or one umbrella which would you choose for dramatic portraits with a black backdrop? Would this change if you had a white backdrop? (new photographer)

i'm going to setup a small home studio in a small budget.i have a cheap yongnou flash.i want to take dramatic male portraits.which softbox should i buy?60x60 or 60x90? does it make any significant difference? and which will be more versatile? please reply...and thumbs up for your contents

How much of the subject are you planning to photograph? The 60x60(24"x24") is good for headshots/head&shoulder portraits but, in my opinion, way too small for anything more (waist up 3/4 and full length shots). If you're planning to shoot more than headshots, umbrellas are far cheaper than soft boxes for the size. Large "shoot through" umbrellas are very budget friendly, but offer little control of the lights direction/spread. Conversely, a "bounce" umbrella(where the light fires into the umbrella and and bounces back out) with a diffusion panel will allow greater control over the spread of light.

Why do you use TTL in that case instead of manual mode?

While I personally am almost exclusively a full-manual metering guy, I like to show TTL in use simply because lot of people like to shoot that way. I prefer to be inclusive and open to whatever works for people!
