ive been flying about 2 yrs now. i started the hobby because i was always interested and because of a shoulder injury i couldnt play golf anymore. i purchased a dx6 gen 3 at the start and loved it. i was lucky because i started with spektrum i.e. receivers and such and got alot of horizon planes. the dx6 had to be shipped for service once and i was without a radio for a period. i decided to go to my hobby shop and the dx8 gen2 happened to be on sale. also glad i got it because i have a couple fms planes with spektrum receivers. the dx8 is great because i like to use the lemon rx with stab plus. since some of my planes have flaps, gear so i can use a different channel they also have great customer service on their planes and electronics. for each. yes i was lucjy because the club i joined was 95% spektrum and was guided the right way. it will probably be all the radio i need and its nice to have the dx6 for a spare when needed. the sim cards make them very interchangeable. i love this hobby more and more and getting your planes to work off 1 radio is a great advantage, so i think i made the right choice and i am very pleased. i got about 7 planes now and its great cuz its much cheaper than golf. in closing its best to join a club and get some advice before u throw hard earned money in the right place. everyone has different tastes

Great insight. I have actually completely switched to FrSky due to some problems I had with the protocol and nothing to do with the actual TX itself. Glad to see people getting into the hobby and enjoying it. Have you ever thought about trying a glow or gas model. We are really thinking about doing a series on those types of planes and I encourage you to subscribe and check out some more of our videos. Thanks for the feedback it's always appreciated.

I've been using it for all my electric stuff and still using my old JR PCM 10 for my gas and Glow planes but I was wanting to change everything to the Spectrum transmitter but I've heard that they might not be the best for glow powered planes especially with the AS3X and safe mode but I wasn't sure! I don't ever use the safe mode because I learned how back in the early 80s before all that technology! I've got a Flysky too but I want to make the best choice for my glow stuff!

I just got the Carbon Cub S+ as my first plane. Also bought the DX8G2 and wanted to utilize the beginner, intermediate, and advanced function. When I bound my transmitter to the plane it set “Gear” as the flight mode switch, and AUX 1 was my D switch which is the 3 step switch. Would I be ok to switch my flight modes to a 3 step switch and the AUX 1 functions to a 2 step switch?

Etienne Farah to be honest. That depends on what you want. If you buy a lot of BNF’s from horizon, or enjoy the simplicity of Spektrum. I would stick with Spektrum. If you like being able to fine tune everything, and wouldn’t have a problem spending close to a half hour extra on every plane setup, not to mention becoming very frustrated. If it were me I would stick with Spektrum. Taranis stuff also feels extremely cheap compared to radios like the DX8G2

@@mbmrc5241 yes, if you have FMS planes (and they do make some nice ones) and use the spektrum TX / RX system, it's a big PitA. In addition to not offering TX programming, you have to also program the RX. You have to program an open-stock RX and FMS DOES NOT HELP by giving you programming!!! They told me to go fly a kite! In contrast, the Horizon site has downloadable programming for their planes (although if you're buying a Horizon plane, there's no reason to buy a PNP version... the BNF will save you about $60).

Joel Tester sure thing man, it may take me a couple days to pinch down exactly what you need. First thing I would do is look up the manual for the AS3X receiver you’re using. This being a newer radio a lot of Spektrum or horizon manuals don’t have a DX8 setup. So if that’s the case use the setup for the DX7 the DX6 has a different flight mode menu so you can’t use that setup. I’ll do some more research and see what I can find out for you

FYI: The FrSky hall effect m9 gimbals are NOT a direct "fit" with the DX8G2 .... I may have switch polarity on some channels of the M9's, but no matter what wire combos I tried, I could only get 1 of the 2 channels on each stick to work. I even tried switching the M9 "working" sensor over, just to see if I did fry something, but still could only get one channel to work. Ended up doing the "Teflon" mod. works ok, was better, no more sticky spot, but not as "buttery" as hall effects.(And yes, the radio is still 100% working, with the original parts) Don't like the fact that I cant just buy a gimbal, even from Spektrum, to drop in myself. I refuse to pay someone to take out 12 screws and one plug connector, for 30+ bucks plus shipping, for something that 99% of us hobbyists can do ourselves. As a quad pilot mostly, and a few little indoor flyers, I haven't needed 8 channels yet, after a year or so in the hobby. Just wanted to share a little, before someone else tries to do the same. I'm no software/hardware eng, so if you all want to look farther into it, with proper tools, I wont stop ya, but if your looking for plug and play gimbal, with minimal soldering, and fab work, then don't even try.

MBMrc I wanted to switch them, not for quality, but for how the M9s feel. The spectrum gimbals feel cheap, and had a "sticky" spot, when I tried to move the stick. The only way to get rid of the stick when I frist move the stick, would have been to release all the tension and have a floppy throttle. On a side/up note. Best review vid I've come across, to date. I love the dx8g2, owned a dx6i 1st Gen years ago. Only thing holding me back from a x9d is the fact that I would have to get new receivers, and learn how to program it, and add/tune all the models as well.

a good review for what it is. there is no question that spektrum, futaba, graupner, tactic, etc, have easy programming going for them, perfect for a newbie, or, if as mentioned in this video, there is a need for mixing and special programming - that's what you pay the added dollars for in those radios. these radios work off ONE rx protocol and they will only function with that one radio protocol. you can't match a spektrum tx with a tactic rx. there are no multi-protocol features in these radios. if you have a stable of different aircraft rx's (RTF's or BNF's etc), you will need a compatible radio for each one. THAT is the problem that some of us face - radio protocol standardization - there is none. enter open-tx. a taranis qx7 with irx4 module is $140 and it has voice and telemetry and multi protocols to bind up with a gamut of different rx's. the ability to bind with multiple protocols was the most important thing for me, as i have a number of different rx's in my stable of aircraft. the fact the newer protocols can be flashed to the radio's firmware is future value added. the jumper t8sg appears to be yet another good open-tx fully multi-protocol radio for an incredibly low $80 price tag. for the average pilot, 4-6 channels is the most ever needed, and some who fly old timers get by with just 3 channels. all these factors need to be assessed before buying any tx radio. i have both spektrum (dms-x) and tactic (slt) radios. both are now rendered obsolete (for ME) by taranis and jumper radios as either of these open-tx source radios can handle ALL my aircraft and many different mixed types of rx's. YES, it does take some good effort to learn how to program more complicated open-tx radio features. however, it's not difficult or hard to learn the basics of these open-tx radios, most of it is quite intuitive, and the basics are only what the majority of pilots need. so yes, a dx8 could the be the one and only tx a pilot needs forever ... as long as the aircraft flown are spektrum compatible only. to some, this is not a problem, while to others who wish to fly a gamut of different brand BNF/RTF machines, or who already have a stable of different rx aircraft, it is a limiting problem of sorts. this is where open-tx multi-protocol radios are worth owning. again, i'll add in - they're 1/3d to 2/3rds the cost of a comparable non-open-tx. quality, durability, support, and cost - it's all good one way or another and ymmv.

@briankolm44177 жыл бұрын
So you suggest a DX6 over this if you don’t need the additional channels?
@rfdsrd7 жыл бұрын
what i'm suggesting is to think about what you require in an r/c radio. if yer a newbie with zero to very limited r/c experience, what will matter are the kinds of aircraft you desire to fly and the number of channels required for immediate and future use. a newbie pilot needs only 3 or 4 channels at best. even an advanced or pro pilot won't be needing more than 5 or 6 channels for the typical aircraft we fly. there are at least a half dozen model type scenarios to apply to a radio system. the bottom line to all is to seek out 1 on 1 assistance from a local r/c club, or better yet join the club. they will recommend a radio that they're familiar with and getting the same radio will allow giving you immediate help. no club, and no knowledgeable r/c pilot close by? first and foremost, get a good virtual flight sim and learn how to fly - real flight 7.5 or phoenix 5.5 are really good sims. even if you have local r/c support, a flight sim allows flying no matter what the weather or your available time - get one! second, choose the newbie aircraft. if you want to fly fixed wing, larger is better, more stable, and usually slower. a high wing old timer is perfect because it was meant to fly without r/c assistance and it'll be very stable. at least a meter's wingspan. if rotor craft is what yer after, that's totally not my game, seek out rotor pilots for input. and, if you decide to disregard all or most of what i've typed and yer headstrong to go out and fly some whizbang RTF or PNP or BNF, and need to get a radio, it'll be hard to beat the Jumper T8SG for more reasons that i have typing space left. :) kzbin.info/www/bejne/mXWrqKOinJVoepo

Brian Kolm unless you fly gliders or helis, you won't need anything more than 6 channels, for now. If price is a problem, then hit up a local club, and ask to handle the different types of radios, then go home and Google them to death. Then buy something. I went with what the local hobby store sold, as that's what parts they would carry. So 100% of my models are all spectrum. Not a problem till you buy online where there are a zillion more choices.
@upperechelon34565 жыл бұрын
I wholeheartedly concur. Spectrum are decent radios but they are a little overpriced in my book. I did however purchase a Dx6e [ on sale for 160.00] to add to my collection. Despite the fact that my mainstay radio is a Taranis x9D along with a Flysky TH9x both very good radios for the price.

I really like the spectrum brand but for the money I can’t seem to break away from Taranis X9D. It seems to have everything the spectrum 8 has plus more. If you add crossfire to the Taranis I really don’t think spectrum can compete! Like I said earlier, I really want a spectrum radio. Several planes I purchased came with spectrum receivers. Spectrum does have a more quality “feel” to it but I’m buying a radio that has all the functions and works evertime I pick it up and Taranis serves me well!

and all feedback and don’t be afraid to share the video and subscribe! We’re really trying to get started on KZbin so thank you very much for the feedback. And the Spektrum actually doesn’t support 5.8 ghz. Anything Spektrum has out right now is only compatible with their DSM2 or DSMX technology which is only 2.4 GHz. I use my spektrum for everything except my DJI Phantom. I believe you almost have to use the proprietary radio unless you were to Hack a Jumper T8SG or a Taranis. However it would most likely recquire some soldering.

I see they are comming out with a Dx8e. I was thinking about buying one but to be honest, for the price is fair. The dx8e is going for $199 . I never jump on a new model. I have a friend that has a computer repair service and he told me he could replace that cheap speaker easily, even an old cell phone speaker would probably work. I am still suffering with a dx6i as a transmitter for my UMX planes ONLY. Now that I pulled the trigger on a Maule, I need to upgrade my transmitter. That has pretty much made me decide the DX 8 is going to be the one I get. I seriously thought about a dx6e but I need something with 3 way switches. Why Horizon keeps selling transmitters with 2 way switches is beyond me. Nice review, because I plan on keeping the dx6i for a buddy box, and I have a cable, thats probably the ONLY reason besides the 8 channels I am going dx8. I would love a DX9 but to be honest, I fly all my GOOD planes using Tactic. I DO NOT trust my nitro planes to Spektrum. Nor my other planes. I lost two planes to the dreaded brown out due to mixing and setting up my planes using all the other features that dx6i cannot handle. I use it for basic flying only.
@mbmrc52416 жыл бұрын
RC Hobbyist Extreme once you switch to a newer generation Spektrum you won’t be having any brownout issues. That’s the difference between the DSMX and the DSM2 protocol. I suggest a DX8G2 over the DX8e because of the fact, that the case on the 8e is cheaper, it doesn’t have diversity which can cause problem with reception also, that’s the key with anything in our hobby from servos to landing gear, if you buy the cheapest thing usually you’ll get the cheapest result, unfortunately. I feel like you can’t go wrong with the DX8 all the switches are 3 ways except 2 of them.

I'm torn, I have a DX6i that I preordered when they were first announced... it's been a good radio but is aging amd.its time to upgrade and use the 6i for teaching my kids or friends to fly. Most of my planes are 4-5 channels, but I do hope to add a couple like the new P-51 with flaps, reteacts, etc.. won't be getting anything more complex or bigger any time soon, and if I do I would be OK with having to get a DX9 or better then... So, I guess 8m just stuck on whether to get the DX6 G3, or fork out an extra $100 for the DX8 G2... I could probably make the DX6 work for all of my current stuff, and also for the next few planes I hope to get... 3 of the 5 on my list are BNF from Horizon, with the most complex being the P-51...I also have my eye on a Zero from another company, it has flaps and retracts but no flight modes, so 6ch would work OK. I may go for the 6, and do without flight modes on the P-51... and I'm ok with AA cells... Any input on this, or why you think I should go ahead and get the 8 would be most welcomed. The price difference is 1/2-1/3 of a BNF plane to add to the hangar...

Why are these radios so damn expensive. Then... receivers and servos...OUCH for what you are getting versus others.
@mbmrc52416 жыл бұрын
Greg Kienle I feel Spektrum is a good bang for the buck, way cheaper than Futaba or JR. I mean I could get a Taranis or a Devo but there’s not any real customer support behind those radios as the community is more or less the technical support. Lua is a joke . Some people just want to fly and not have to program a simple 4 channel plane.

Greg Kienle Not really expensive at all ,to put it in context, when I started flying many years ago ,my Futaba 6xas fm set cost around $500.00 and 6 channel recievers were around $100.00 dollars ,a lot of money back then .My radio is still working today ,never had a glitch etc.Imho pay a bit more for quality and backup and you get that with Spektrum or Futaba.

Sorry but you lost my confidence vote on the 6e. You stated you out grew it. Then why would you buy something that you have to replace? Do you think guys in the hobby enjoy owning 8 transmitters? I personally am fed up with so many transmitters. If I can find the DX 8 gen 2 for that price, then I will invest. It's a good price. I heard the DX6 is much better than the e. I was thinking of getting the DX6 gen 2 but as it stands, the 8 is really what I want. I have a few Spektrum radios and only use them because of the safe. After getting burned with the 6i, I went Tactic on all my better quality planes and have not been sorry. Both Tactic and Spektrum are easy to use. I don't need a Tyrannis for anything. I don't " race" quads, I fly them for the videos only. Racing to me is going up against others in competition. Guys today fly them all Willy nilly and call that racing. That's NOT racing. Oh yeah, I am replacing that crappy speaker. Everyone says they are shit. A good computer speaker will fix that junk speaker. Typical Spektrum,falls flat again on a product. How much fine tuning do you need? If it's not a quad, then I think the DX8 works just fine. To be honest, I would never use Spectrums for quad" racing". Enjoy. Oh great review. Nice coverage. It's always good to get others opinion before buying. That's where I am right now.

I appreciate the kind words, however after a recent downfall and loss of trust in not only Spektrum, but DSM technology; I have decided to switch to what the rest of my family uses. Which is Futaba. I will be releasing a video very soon. It is a far more trustworthy system especially when it is hooked up to the scope and you can see how much more frequently the FHSS and the FASST system hops between frequencies and how much of the 2.4 gHz band the Futaba protocols use as oppes to Spektrums. Much more reliable system.

And also, just to add I do not race Drones. I do have a few however but most of them are used for filming. The fine tuning I want is for my fixed wing models. With the Futaba i can program snap rolls with ease. Also the S-Bus servo setup will be far more reliable for larger gas models. What i also like with the futaba again is the ease of Mixing, My brother has a mix in his radio where he mixes the Ailerons to the Elevator and uses the ailerons as flaps as he lands on sport models without flaps such as a Super Sportster or a Four Star. The more Up elevator you feed, the more it applies the "Flap System" to the aircraft that doesnt have flaps. Its ingenious and impossible with Spektrum

MBMrc I dont blame you one bit. Problem being, most neginner systems or even gyro systems seem to be controlled by Spktrum and Horizon. Trur you can ditch those systems. There are a couple gyro systems that you can hook any receiver into and they work fine. Futaba has always been ahead of Spektrum in reliability. As the addage goes, you get what you paid for still rings true to me. I do like Tactic but they are limited on so many fronts. In the end ,its kind of like cars, Some are Chevy guys, some are Ford, eather way, they suck to a degree, but people still buy them.
@mbmrc52416 жыл бұрын
That is exactly how I look at it, [Ford, Chevy analogy] completley agree!

MBMrc Hey buddy, I have been using Futaba for 15 years ,and never had one brownout or problem at all ,my 14sg is easy to program and does more than I'll ever need ,I like the quality feel of switches etc ,happy flying.

You get what you pay for quality wise. It’s pricey for what you get in terms of features. For example a Taranis X9D is feature loaded but it’s plastic case feels incredibly cheap and not drop friendly. Any other questions?
