Argentina grew into the tournament and the experience gained against the Netherlands helped them settle down in extra time/penalties against France. I think if Argentina hadn’t topped the group and played France in the quarterfinals they would’ve been knocked out but I’m glad it worked out this way and Messi was finally able to lift the WC.

I really hope that this world cup will finally help football fans to see that there are amazing teams outside of Europe and maybe south america. If you ever watched morocco play you would never have put them last in their group or at least not after canada. Great analogue about England, Spen! You look at Germany not even making it out the group, Brazil losing at the 1/4's as well. It was a tournament of surprises. I just hope England's young core with 1 or 2 tournaments under their belt can now kick on and lift a trophy at the Euro's. This England reminds me the 90s-00s Spain: great players like Raul, Morientes, Hierro and still never even reached a real clutch match, always out at quarter finals or even earlier. They kicked in when an extraordinary group of talents that grew altogether since childhood stepped in, dominating 3 consecutive major tournaments. I think England is almost at that point, youngsters coming in the squad are really talented, if Southgate can mix up a talent-smoothie and fit them in a functional squad they can go far. No other England team did this well: 2nd at Euro 2020, already a huge achievement, good world cup, unlucky in the bracket, you were the real semifinal for France, and the game was more in English hands than the French one. England and France are set to be the benchmark for European football in the near future

Beating strong teams happens from time to time. Croatia made it to the final in 2018 on the back of 3 penalty shootouts. Penalty shootouts got them to the semifinal in 2022.

In regards to the England point, it’s easy to say “that’s what I expected, so it’s good enough” (not word for word, but that’s your point) & I would completely agree, but then you watch the game & it’s a France team that had 1 chance & scored 2 goals. Southgate leaving it too late to make decisive substitutions & all in all just lacking that “umf” that a top manager will give you in these games. I’m more than happy to give him the next tournament, but even if he wins it I’d like to see a change going forward for the next generation without the likes of Kane, Henderson, Stones, Walker & Pickford, ect. As the players coming through are genuinely world class & I don’t think Southgate knows how to get the best out of them.

Sorry, nothing against Southgate, he has very good results backing him, but tbh, as a german, he reminds me a bit too much of Jogi Löw. Being good with the board, not thinking too much out of the box, having obvious favourites and just being good enough to please the majority. I still think the cup in 2014 was a lucky one for us, before brazil the performances were average. Maybe Southgate wins something in the next tournaments and it was even unlucky to match up against France in the quarters, but England nonetheless keeps failing to beat any of the better teams. He's the best manager since ages for England, but would he also do well in any other scenario? I've talked with a lot of people about england and i have a feeling that generally people outside of England judge his qualities a bit more realistically. But we'll see. With this squad he must win something!

I would disagree with the Netherlands being dark horses they have always been strong internationally except for 2016-2018 due to changes around the team. So the dark horse as the Netherlands is not really appropriate. Being dutch I expect Netherlands going to the QF minimum and can definitely reach the finals. I definitely believe we could’ve made it to the finals if we kept pushing after scoring the 2-2 but due to our lack of urgency and very defensive play style we lost the QF to Argentina and just unlucky with pens.

Honestly youre predictions werent anything special, this world cup just had a lot of surprises. If you told me Japan would top their group over Germany I wouldnt have believed it, let alone believed germany just straight up got canned. I loved this world cup because after match day one it was clear that literally any upset could and would happen. Im so happy Argentina won, but truthfully I had them falling to Brazil as well for a France Vs. Brazil final, as did the majority because they were the clear favorites. Just more reason to love this sport and all the competitions we have the privilege of watching!

that is probably because many of you don't know much about S American football. The matches between Argentina & Brazil are almost even 42-43 games (1 + Brazil). We have been playing against Brazil for 112 years 😂😂. We know how to play each other. This way around (unlike the Brazilians) we were very determined to win, we would had won against them.
