Hello Tom, First off. My Grandfather was from England and due to him, I tend to sound like I came from England as well. He passed away when I was 13 and I miss hearing an English voice once (Other then my own.) in a while and I loved hearing your voice. On BB8. I have read newspaper and magazine reports and seen a few videos here on You Tube about him. BUT! This report of yours was much better and covered more points then the news stories and other videos did. I was considering getting a BB8 for myself and your report helped me make up my mind about getting him, Thank you. I have a VOX R2D2 from the first year that "Tiger Toys" (Hasbro Toys.) came out with them (Thinkway Toys is making them from this new movie now.) and I have had a ruddy blast with him and every time I set him loose on his patrol mode, he gives my cats a very hard time and drives them around the flipping twist! I can not wait till I can get BB8 here and cut him and R2 loose in the house and watch as they target one of the cats and goes after her! THIS IS GOING TO BLOODY WELL BE A TON FUN!

We love him and he regulalry gets to patrol around the house. Such a clever droid and almost never gets stuck/trapped. I do not know the VOX version but I have the new R2-D2 from Thinkway and it looks to me like they changed it somewhat. Less reliant on verbal commands, lots more pre-programmed 'character sequences'. (Which I have also reviewed) I hope very much you enjoy BB-8 and that both BB-8 and R2-D2 get up to mischeif whilst on patrol!

+Dávid Zemniczky Obviously scaring your pet would not be good for your dog... Also depending on how big your dog is deoends if the main sohero ball would fit into its mouth. It it can, then you will hav to keep them seperated. Either way, BB-8s head is far less sturdy and could be easily damaged by a dog chewing it...

Also don't worry about her getting scared, because she's used to it: I have 2 brothers, both have airsoft 😄. Also does the ball go without the head?

+engekaleman I think there is a general rule in Star Wars: 'Don't shoot the droids.' ! :) Think back to the start of A New Hope. C3PO and R2-D2 walk across a corridor full of blaster bolts. Not one hit. Well. Thats how I see it. Everyone would rather capture and reprogram droids than destroy them. I am sure your BB-8 will soon learn all the avoidance and hiding tricks necessary. (Mine hides behind Keylo Ren. That hood of his gives him a blind spot!!)

Hi and did you know that bb8 works also with two other sphero apps ? Sphero Macrolab where you have to shake bb8 and he makes connection with the app. The app thinks it is connected to a olllie but you can do amazing things with this app :-) and bb8 also works with sphero Draw, you can draw any figure you like and bb will follow it .

There ars so many features 'missing' that are already available for their Sphero 1,2 and Revealed that converting these and adding the 'Star Wars' look and feel as well as enhancing BB-8's character is what I guess is taking the time. There may also be some aspects that Orbotix have neen asked to hold back until after the movie hits the big screens...

Hi Tom, nice review, helped clarify a few things for me with my new xmas toy from wifey. He does seem to struggle a bit on thick carpet. Ive noticed that some of the command (button and verbal) don't seem to do much other than have the little chap wobble about. He never rolls far on the "its a trap" command?

This video really helped me out! The only instructions I got for BB-8 were how to dispose of him. I didn't have him charged fully at my first time, I was so excited to play around and see what he did, I didn't know if I messed up his battery or not? I've been worried that I may have messed up by taking him off charge before he was done and then setting him back on. Any thoughts guys?

+RC MoonPie Glad you found my video useful. You are right, there are some 'best behaviours' with batteries that help the overall use and life of a battery - like to fully charge a battery each time. Letting it cool down for some minutes before re-charging it. Avoid hard knocks and bangs etc. However, You should be fine! Modern batteries are less suseptical to battery "memory" charge issues and you will find that now you have fully charged it and now re-charge it after use, that the inbuilt charging management is now taking care of it all for you. Orbotic have been using wireless chargeing in their older Sphero 1 and 2s for years and jnownwhatbtheybare doing. I am sure - all will be fine now that you have fully charged it. 😀

Was funny. I tried my cell phone charger cause it has the same charge port end on the cord, worked perfectly. I think it was the cord that Bb-8 came with. Piece of garbage that cord is! So my little guy is running marvilously! I actually didn't know about that little speedometer bar for him to change how fast he goes in Drive Settings until I saw this video! Great job with the video! Great help for me! Love this little guy! Just wish they brought back his old sounds instead of his new sound...was cute before when he said "no no no" lol

Excellent video. Just opened my bb8. Got everything I need to go from box to 1st use (in 3-4 hours) from your vid. As far as charging goes, is there any need, after first full charge, to discharge to 0 and fully recharge (that's the recommendation, for example, for my electric toothbrush) or just keep him fully charged always by storing him on the docking station?

Glad my video helped get your BB-8 up and rolling. I do store my BB-8 on its cradle, but only power that on when BB-8 is flat. I (out of habbit) wait till the battery is both flat and had time to cool down between charges.

+LamsterLou That is a tough one to answer right now. Currently BB-8 has only the feature Apps that I showed. Where as Sphero being 2 years older has over 20 fun Apps that you can access from day 1. In the end though, they are both the same 'ball' and BB-8 works as well without the head and then you can pop on a nubby cover and go outside etc. At the moment, they both have unique benifits and differences with the Apps. But only BB-8 has the character and autonomous functions.... So go for a BB-8 !

When BB-8 goes flat, you have to pick him upmand again pop him on the charge cradle. Each time you pick up and move BB-8 in relation to where you are with your smartdevice it is worth realignment with his Tail Light.

You need to enable Bluetooth in your smart devices menu first. You can’t connect to BB-8 without Bluetooth.

Ok. Shutdown the app and make sure it has been unloaded from memory. Turn off and on the Bluetooth on you smart device. Have BB-8 in the charger plugged in. Start up the App and hold your phone close to BB-8. If that doesn’t work, then press the button on the charging cradle.

Try forgetting this device in your ohone and start from the beginning. As long as fully charged and in the cradle, pressing the crade button normally sorts any BB-8 connectivity issue.

Great video here, very informative! However, I do seem to have a problem with my droid. After charging BB-8 fully and pressing the button on the side of his charge station, BB-8 turned on normally, and did all the funny head movements and all that jazz. Then I tried getting the App to sync with the droid, switching Bluetooth on and off to see if it made any difference. But my phone simply does not want to recognise my BB-8, even though the droid itself seems to be in perfect working order. Upon further investigation, the Bluetooth device BB-A8A3 appeared on my phone, which I assume is the BB-8 droid. Trying to pair my phone with it manually yields the following message: "Couldn't pair with BB-A8A3 because of an incorrect PIN or passkey". What am I missing?

Tried uninstalling the app, reinstalling it, and then tried to detect BB-8. Didn't work. Cleared all the app data from my phone, then uninstalled again. Rinse and repeat. Still didn't work. Haven't paired with any other BB-8's before. It's really very baffling.

I'm currently using an android phone I've had for around 2, 3 years. It's a little slow, but never given me any problems, and it's never failed to use an app before. I'll be testing this with another smart device shortly to see if it's my phone's Bluetooth causing the problem, or maybe BB-8 isn't receiving anything.

+envelope91 To answer Scientifically, yes. magnets do loose their magnatism over time. But very slowly and over a long period of time. (We are talking less than 1% over a dozen year period). As long as you look after BB-8 and do not constantly have him falling down a full set of stairs, boiling in hot water and not kept in or near strong electro-magnetic fields. This is not an issue that anyone needs to be concerned with for BB-8.
