I mentioned to one of the posts above, my issue is not with the numbers. What I have a problem is his assertion that the ‘solution’ is to simply ‘not pay the debt’ because it is ‘odious debt.’ That would be a veritable death knell for the country’s economy. Do people really think that the various multinational banks, Bretton Woods institutions, (I work at one of those), and various creditor nations (eg the Paris Club nations) will just let some African (or LatAm or S/SE Asian) country simply come and claim the debt was ‘odious and we will not pay?’ With no consequence? You really think it would be as easy as Mr Wanjigi claims it would be? That we have public discourse, do an audit, make the claim, and they will just raise their hands, say mea culpa and admit it’s true, and cancel the debt so we only have 30% of the current debt in our books to pay???? They would make an example of the country to ensure other nations do not get such fancy ideas. There is a reason Chad, Ghana, Zambia, and now Ethiopia are working with the G20 Common Framework restructuring to try and get out of their default status. Or how Ghana has MASSIVELY punished local bond holders and pension plans for their people to avoid hurting foreign debt holders. Or maybe those countries are dumb - maybe they should just have done what Mr Wanjigi claims would work, and claim that the debt is ‘odious!’ After all, it’s just that simple, right? Ridiculous! This is why I wish the radio station had a proper economist to challenge the NONSENSE Mr Wanjigi spouts forth every second month on that program. And the ‘solutions’ he offers are nonsense. Pure unadulterated nonsense. Such a high level of nonsense that it would have been better he said the solution is selling hyena gonads or snake venom or whatever nonsense that other fella with the dreadlocks was saying! I personally believe Mr Wanjigi is ‘talking his own book.’ He knows a default would absolutely devastate the economy, and having dollars outside he could step in and buy a lot of assets at (literally) throw away prices. The issue though is that it would be at the cost of everything we consider good about Kenya. I would personally stand to benefit as well if the Shilling collapsed since I saw this happening years back and positioned myself appropriately , but I am a patriot and would not want to benefit at the cost of my country. Unfortunately most of the leaders in this country are not patriotic - that is why ONE side claims they are going to the streets to fight for justice for Baby Pendo (and once they get a handshake they forget about her), and the OTHER side claims to be about hustlers when it is clear they only need those for the voting booth. BOTH sides are the same, but unfortunately very few people ask the right questions! Including radio stations that broadcast asinine ‘solutions’ without having someone learned enough to CHALLENGE what is said. Or even hosts who can - at the very least - google what happened to Argentina when it defaulted. Nothing. Just providing platforms to people who are (knowingly or unknowingly) calling for economic devastation on the country. Or if inflation was above 100%. People like Mr Wanjigi are highly dangerous. They are dangerous because they come across as polished, and in a country where people are used to politicians acting like Vitimbi comedians (eg how politicians dance before and after their ‘speeches’), people like him come across as ‘serious.’ Yet his plan would absolutely devastate the Kenyan economy.

Global patents do not occur in a vacuum. For a country to produce global patents in reasonable numbers, then it must put in money into research and development. Local universities can hardly meet their most basic running costs. Public universities are often on strike like school teachers. In addition to spending most of their time in teaching activities (and very little serious research work) most lecturers also run around from one university to another in an effort to put a few more coins into their pockets. Does this mean that they will tax the bond holders?
@BerylAkullah11 ай бұрын
When value of shillings goes low, what bond holders get out will be far less than what they put in (in terms of value) so in essence they will be at loss

If I were president the first thing i would do is carry out a forensic audit at the treasury. the govt wants to finance housing why don't they do a forensic audit on treasury to find out where every shilling is going. Time and time again the auditor general and controller of budget the only patriotic Kenyans in govt who constantly report the massive looting of govt resources starting with treasury payouts like the recent 67b payments made to non existent pensioners and other ailments with this dept, and god knows what else the treasury is illegally paying out, may be the govt could fund its housing and NSSF programs by just sealing these loopholes and holding civil servants accountable for theft of tax payers money. One can easily come up with over a trillion in illegal payments by treasury enough to fund housing, NSSF and free secondary education. Plus with ongoing cuts in wastage and digitization of services, kenya would be able to offer its citizens services that the govt would not even have to burden Kenyans with taxation. Corruption is the biggest tax on Kenyans. The govt needs to fund a special purpose team ( just like the one they created for pending bills led by Ouko) drawn from the auditor general and controller of budget, audit entire govt depts. No need to waste funds on a different audit firm the auditor general and controller of budget have proven they have the capacity to do the job. The team can hire local audit firms for support like the organization of accountants and such like bodies to carry out a thorough audit of treasury payments and uncover the billions of illegal payments.

Odious debt? How did the financing countries approve such? Is it true that none of it was used to fund any projects? What then did Uhuru government use in the many projects we see around the country! I am having a hard time understanding this….This information should be audited….
