Regarding the spider people falling in line, I think it's important to consider that spider society works on the basis of whether you're chosen or not to join in, Miguel simply has the ability to select whoever he wants and it wouldn't be that crazy to think he'd only do it with like minded individuals to support his mission It's also shown that some of them aren't completely convinced even if they try to stop miles

@@potater8034 it does make sense that Spectacular and a lot of Spider-Men do since they 1) were the chosen Spider-Man of their universe 2) already had gone through certain major canon events that would lead them to believe this is how it has to be in all universes for Spider-Man to truly be the best version of himself. Since they have already gone through those canon events there is no "maybe I can stop it if..." mindset, just the acceptance they've already gone through.

@@jandjhroco I think we're fed with a false assumption. We're led to assume Miguel was picky with spidermen, but then we see that he literally has a citadel filled with all types of spidermen, with all types of attitudes and tropes. So, it stands to question, where does the line Miguel start to draw on? Perhaps the line is Miles Morales himself. Perhaps Miguel was hard-pressed or had to be convinced by a large degree to recruit anyone related to Miles, since his universe began the rift of the multiverse, and that he's a walking anomaly. Gwen might be the last spiderfolk Miguel had to recruit that's within Miles' circle, and that's where we start to view the story.

Totally agree, another thing is that any version of spiderman may well be able to internalise the trauma of what happened to them. They probably don't see the tragedy of another spiderman in the same way as the tragedy of of an innocent civilian because they project themselves onto it and potentially have less sympathy, if they're the type to choose their own suffering over the suffering of others. To them Miles may be selfish and they may have a "Dude just get it over and done with" attitude. (I feel this point is also enhanced by your point as well as ultimately they're all people who were given a handout by Miguel to join)

That's what I was thinking. They just heard an order and complied, though they were all there generally to keep the canon. Also, I don't think they actually work that well together. Case in point: there were hundreds if not thousands of spidermen in the base all trying to stop Miles. All doing it together but not in sync and not successfully. Miles didn't even use his invisibility, to lure them all out. So yeah, smaller groups work better for them 😂

I think Miguel’s logic is kinda comforting to the older spider people, which is most of them. they’ve already been through their trauma, and so it feels nice to think that it meant something, that their pain was at least helpful to others, because spider man is about sacrifice so other people can live well. but even then, most of the ones that understood the conflict wavered. like Gwen letting Miles do his thing in Munbattan, deep down they all wish that those deaths didn’t have to happen, and most of them have let Miles at least try. Miguel also seems to be projecting quite a lot - he resembles Miles much more than any Peter, and so stopping him now must feel to Miguel like he’s keeping his younger self from messing up. it’s rather incredible how every motivation makes sense, tbh
@JudgementNutter Жыл бұрын
Josh Keaton himself has talked about and tried to rationalize why HIS version of Spectacular sided with Miguel. He confirmed that it was Spectacular who said "Captain Stacey, I'm so sorry" while on the ground mourning his death along with all the other Spiders in the movie. We know Spectacular Captain Stacey knew Peter was Spider-Man and tried to help him out so his death hit Peter extremely hard, it was another father figure he lost and could not save. Also remember Spectacular Peter is only 15, he's young and impressionable so when Miguel shows up and seems to have all the answers, Josh rationalized that yeah Peter would latch on and trust him, looking for that father figure. We see that Miguel and the other Spiders have machines to try and contain/fix broken cannon worlds and he says "we haven't always been lucky". That tells me enough Spiders have broken cannon for Miguel to develop technology to try and save it and to justify his views. There isn't much to prove he is wrong, alot of what he said is technically true so I can definitely understand why alot of Spiders joined him. We don't know how many worlds have been destroyed and how many Spiders have died from broken cannon but I don't think it was just Miguel, it must have been more for him to be this savage and insistent that Miles let his father die.

Pretty much. Spider Society also does inadvertently prey on the "Worst" parts of Spidey, through a trolley problem they can't just risk themselves and derail the trolley to solve. The "Worst" part, and often true tragedy, of Spidey is when they allow their grief, guilt, and loss too much control over their choices. While masking that with a "pragmatic" lens. Spidey tends to be just terrible at processing those emotions. Reflecting that societies creator, the very clearly "barely holding himself together" Miguel. Its an echo-chamber. Not intentionally or maliciously, but that is what it is. And given the subject matter of the "intervention", it is heavily implied that both Peni Parker and Spectacular Peter are likely coming very recently off their "Second Canon Moments". The death of a Captain" figure they were close to. For Peni, this would be her version of Aunt May, who is killed by VEN#m while trying to save the child who was that mech's test-pilot. For Spectacular, it would be his Captain Stacy. So, yeah? I could buy them both falling for Miguel's ideology given that.

Miguel had access to the multiverse, if he encountered a 'Peter Parker' who didn't agree w/ his plan to control the Spiderverse, he just needed to go to a version of that Spiderman that would. It is entirely possible all the Spidermen in the movie agreed w/ his plan. Gwen was one of the newest so her connection w/ Miles from the first movie and being relatively new to the group, didn't conflict w/ her 180 at the end. She had already accepted her Dad would die until Miles convinced her that he didn't have to, which was confirmed when she went home and her Dad took himself out of the 'captain must die' curse, and that only happened because Gwen revealed herself, something she cautioned Miles not to. It took losing his daughter for him to quit the force, thus saving his life. Miles was right.

There is a reason that Spider-Ham, Spider-Man Noir, Ultimate Spider-Man, the live-action Spider-Men, and more are not present, as well as the fact that Gwen would not have been brought into the society had Jessica not convinced Miguel to let her join; the Spider-People that are a part of the Spider Society are only there because Miguel chose them and actively wanted them to join, because he believed they would believe in and fight for his cause.

The cast of the 1st film are the biggest liability being most likely to help Miles but initially they all side with Miguel. Seeing what they have at stake and their circumstances I feel it points towards the members of the society being carefully chosen. Miguel agrees to let Gwen join once she has a falling out with her dad and has nowhere to go. She's in an incredibly emotionally vulnerable state and she's offered a new life and purpose when things have gone awry in her own universe. Peter B. Parker got his chance to fix his relationship and start a family and by protecting the stability of the multiverse he ensures he gets to keep living his dream life. Peni has her upgraded mech in the movie and going off the comics that means her aunt passed away. It makes sense that dealing with her grief she'd be more cynical and receptive to Miguel's idea of the cannon. Noir and Spider-Ham aren't shown as part of the spider society (although it's completely possible they were members) and only appear in the end when Gwen brings them to help Miles so it's possible they were excluded because they couldn't easily be turned to Miguel's way of thinking. Animation has come an extremely long way, to the point people are saying the movies can "tell a story with the animation alone", but the writing hasn't improved, which is what prompts people to get so immersed in the visuals instead. As an example, animating Hobie to look like a perpetual punk magazine cut out collage, while extremely impressive and cool to look at, doesn't make his dialogue better, it doesn't make his role in the film better. He's still kinda just 'there' with very little motivation given, even providing the eleventh hour key to Gwen joining the fight somehow. Everyone else is the same. Indian Spider-Man, whose name I've already forgotten, is gorgeously animated using his rings and webs in various cool ways. But his actual dialogue is not that good either. Miguel is presented with such an imposing VISUAL presence, but until the last moments of his battle with Miles it still feels like he isn't any stronger than the others, or is holding back, and his cool 'cyber webs' are hardly ever used to do anything interesting or unique to him. Visually you're just in absolute awe that people could storyboard and render such incomprehensibly complicated scenes, sometimes with like 50 Spider-Men onscreen, it's mindblowing. But the actual plot and stakes are with Spot, who basically gets his god level power up and then just peaces out inexplicably for the second half so he can be in the third film instead. The writing doesn't match the quality of the animation at all.

One would think that there'd be at least a few other people in the spider society that don't "fit" as neatly and aren't willing to just take orders nilly-willy.

And while Peter B and Gwen were also chasing him, they did so reluctantly. Same reason spiderbyte let Miles get transported at the end. I personally felt like the movie, despite being a continuation of Miles's story, essentially gives the main story arc over to Gwen in this one. It's about her relationship with her dad and how to reconcile who she is with him while trying to navigate this blooming friendship she wants to pursue. She goes through an entire old stability/instability/new stability by the film's end with a desire to fix the mistakes she made in her friendship with Miles while she was running away from her own problems. Miles has an arc in this movie as well, for sure, but it also feels like one that doesn't completely resolve due to his experiences with Peter B. and Gwen leading him to believe he's better off without them. And I like the movie a lot for that. It starts with Gwen and almost ends with Gwen too except for the end stinger.

The biggest thing why this is not a "part 1" for me, but a complete movie: This is more a Gwen movie than a Miles movie. She is the first and last person we see in the movie. We see her not wanting friends (we know that from the first one though), not working well in a team (even with the other Spider-People), having a fallout with her dad and leaving home. And over the course of the movie, she comes to terms with that, that she is just running from her problems. And in the end mends her relationship with her dad and builds her own team at the very end. I think her story was beautifully told and had a very good finish. For me this was the best Marvel movie ever and I can't wait to watch it again.

@JustinKuanomics Жыл бұрын
I think the best way to see it is as both its own movie and a part 1. It leaves on the cliff-hanger but for the most part the internal story arcs have concluded. In Into the Spiderverse, this was centered around Miles and Peter B, with both reaching a satisfying conclusion. In Across the Spiderverse it's once again Miles as he wrestles with life AS Spiderman but also now fleshing out Gwen's. Like you've mentioned, Gwen's wraps up and she has hit a cathartic point of reconciliation and acceptance to not just accept things the way they are. Miles, similarly, has the sense of not belonging, which starts at home, where he has no outlet to share his struggles and knowing that he may never see his true comrades/friends again; and then moreso later as he is reconciled with his friends only to find that he is an outsider, an anomaly. As Miles enters the wrong universe, he has already wrapped up his internal struggle. Miguel does not get to tell him whether he belongs, as him mom says "he belongs there". Yes, both Gwen and Miles external story hasn't quite completed yet, as now Gwen's situation is an anomaly too, but internally they have reached a place of certainty that they will fight for their dads' lives, canon or not.
@joshuayonemura2572 Жыл бұрын
People, including myself to a certain degree, don't think it's a complete movie because the story opened another can of worms without resolving it which was Miles being stuck in Earth 42 and finding out that Miles 42 is the Prowler in that universe. It doesn't feel finished or what we should say satisfying because right as they concluded some of the conflict they brought in another major conflict right near the end that was not given a conclusion. A good example of what to do and that has been compared to Across the Spiderverse is Avengers: Infinity War because despite being a cliffhanger, the ending was conclusive. The heroes lost, the villain won, and everyone has trauma. The difference being the ending credit scenes which gave hope for the sequel. Across the Spiderverse. Neither the hero nor the villain has won as was set up by the beginning and middle parts of the movie. Just as the plot could have ended, we're inrtoduced to information and conflict that begs to be resolved and it's not which means no conclusive ending. Now one might wonder why does it matter where the cliffhanger is? Especially when it is at the end of the movie or after the credits. ANSWER: The clip is a part of the movie before the credits there is no difference between the clip information and the main plot which can create that sense of dissatisfaction for the reasons stated above. The reason the clip information when it comes to cliffhangers is because it gives the audience time to process what happened at the very and and give room to digest the the story. The clip after the credits after the mental processing is done then reinvigorates the audience back into the plot by adding a small amount of information to latch onto. That's why in part why the Marvel movies have been successful.

I feel like, to me, the spider people of this squad turning on Miles made sense given how Miguel was running things. They're not a fully accurate portrayal of every spider-man in existence. They're a tightly-knit squad of spider people specifically curated to be a part of Miguel's bigger plans. And I think that, in turn, a lot of them were willing to sacrifice some of their own core beliefs to better fit the vision Miguel has for the future or the spidermen.I think a lot of them have enough faith and goodwill towards Miguel to believe he has their collective better interest in mind. He's literally telling them if Mile's dad doesn't die it could tear out the fabric of their own reality. For classic Spiderman while that's a harrowing conundrum they see it as a bitter pill to swallow for the sake of protecting mankind at large. I've got a strong feeling that, if Miles were to find another way around the "canon" in BTSV, all the Spidermen we saw here will be immediately behind him.
@NerdMiGerd Жыл бұрын
Spectacular Spiderman's exact line, I feel, can coincide with the tough lessons he learned throughout his show. We've seen right in the pilot episode a theme of him sacrificing things important and dear to him (i.e. disposing of the one thing that could undo his spider powers), and what he says specifically seems to really match that. He's not all that harsh to Miles about it, and is clearly quite sympathetic, but from what he's been told by Miguel he understands that there are larger things at stake. That's why he essentially says "I feel for you Miles, I really really do. But this is just part of our job."

The core of Spider-man is that he saves the people he saves, because deep down he knows that every person in New York is the uncle Ben of someone's life. Spider-man never celebrated Uncle Ben's death as a necessary character building experience, he mourned it as a mistake he would never make again. To have a swarm of Spider-soldiers motivated by the thought that Uncle Ben of Captain Stacy need to die seems like a strange direction to take the character who's fundamentally driven by guilt.

I think it makes sense considering what is supposedly at stake. You're right in that Ben's death motivated Peter to make sure this doesn't happen to everyone else. But he can't save everyone and sometimes, he's gonna have to sacrifice the things personal to him so that everyone else can be safe. The greatest examples of this in recent times is Insomniac Spider-Man (who's a member of the society) choosing to give up Aunt May to ensure the others survive, and MCU Spider-Man sacrificing his personal life to make sure the multiverse remains intact. Miguel himself tried to live the life of a dead alternate counterpart, and everyone in that universe died as a result. The Spider-Men of the society are given an ultimatum: save the people that they failed to save before at the cost of the multiverse collapsing, or let these moments play out and keep the multiverse safe. It's a difficult decision, but Spider-Man always choose the difficult choice. Right? Of course, it doesn't mean it's right, and that all Spiders would agree with this. I imagine Peter Parker of Edge of Time would have some words with the Society. And I used MCU Peter as an example earlier, but all of that happened because he tried to change the villains' fates, and well, Miguel isn't exactly keen on inviting him

ATSV has my favorite Movie Soundtrack Ever. after watching the movie all the tracks makes me feel every single emotion possible man. when the movie starts in gwen’s world and Self Love (my favorite of the OST) is playing while learning more about gwen’s origin was a perfect choice. That song set the tone for the rest of the film. The rest of the songs on this soundtrack add so much emotion to the scene it’s used in. Hummingbird made me want to tear up seeing miles let the music take him to another dimension. (literally) More songs like Link Up and Ansiedades during the morales party are also great. I think my favorite song/scene combo is definitely the use of Another Dimension when miles and gwen are sitting upside down, talking, reminiscing, and just having a moment between the two of them away from all the chaos for once. it definitely made me wanna tear up a bit. Huge credit to Metro Boomin for making this incredible OST.

@hadeefirdaus1154 Жыл бұрын
I would assume that most spidermen in the spider society would take Miguel’s words as law on 2 things. The first being most of their Canon Events already happened thus nobody has the need to change anything. The second is that as they are older in a way, more experienced, they would connect with Miguel’s story and theory of the universe crumbling when trying to fix things. They are more logical and less impulsive and won’t do something that they would regret later on. It’s not that they don’t want to save these people but they saw first hand that saving everybody ultimately kills everybody like we see in Mumbattan. I believe they have a task force for stopping the destruction of a universe because these happened quite a few times. Thus showing that they tried to defy the law that was created for them but each time doomed to failed. With regards to the newer spidermen in the society takes it all wholeheartedly as they are the juniors and imagine 90% of people say that this is the way, the newer ones would also assume so and follow it blindly (albeit its neither bad or good in actuality). Only Miles being the anomaly that he is, defies everybody. In a sense, as he wasn’t supposed to be Spider-Man (allegedly), he would have a different personality altogether and believe in different things entirely. Therefore, the part of the Spider Society makes sense to me. idk, thats just me

Same as the first. Phastos from Eternals is Miles father, Mahershala Ali will be playing Blade and he plays Aaron Davis, Oscar Isaac is 2099 and Moon Knight.

Thank you!! Idk why so many people were so upset about the cliffhanger when that's the one thing I expected out of this movie. Besides it quite literally reminded me of how a lot of comic issues I've read leave you on a cliffhanger, making sure you stay tuned for the next one to come. Some stories can't be told in one go and it's very different from studios trying to build a franchise and setting up sequels, because unlike those movies this definitively feels purposeful.

Spider man from other properties I view purely as Easter eggs and not as actual representations of those characters. I did, however, have an issue with Peter B Parker being so OK with allowing Miles father to die. That felt much more like a betrayal of a character to me. As for the movie being a part 1, you can make a movie feel like a 2 part story while still having a climax occur in part 1 (thinking of empire strikes back ending on a cliffhanger but still having a battle between Luke and Vader) and it just felt like Across the Spiderverse was missing that, like it just ended without a third act. I needed a little more closure than it gave.

Just going off on the "Without Uncle Ben, most of us wouldn't even be here." quote, and coupled with the tragic backstory of Miguel's universe ending moment, I think Miguel might have guilt tripped PeterB to an extent. He does switch sides at the end, so I think he was having second thoughts throughout the course of the movie. The same way Gwen realized she was on the wrong side when she saw how upset Miles was that they both knew what was going on and "talked about it." Probably a lot more Spider-Men will be reflected in this switch-sides in the next movie. I bet most of them were guilt tripped too. Like most of the theories in this comment section, they were probably recruited after the canon events have occured, and are at their lowest points when joining.

Yeah, it's like when the on screen Spider-people turn up in the comics Spider-verse. I don't think Insomniac's Peter is going to bring up his adventure with the Inheritors at any point. I will say I do feel a bit bad for Greg Weisman. It sounds like he was a bit put off by not being informed until Spec Spider-man was on the poster, and while I think he's too professional to kick up a fuss as it is the nature of not owning the IP, he's been quite quiet about the film since coming out. At the very least on the off chance he'd ever get a chance to continue Spectacular, you know he'd face an onslaught of questions treating George's death and Peter's choices in this film as canon to Spectacular.

Lots of people are getting upset about the cliffhanger sequel hook but it's basically The Empire Strikes Back. And I suspect we'll get a better movie than Return of the Jedi.

i think the reason miles got away in the first place is because spider-man can’t really work well in teams. they were all essentially getting in each others way when they were bunched up trying to get one small and sly target
@BibberzOL Жыл бұрын
With all the spidermans going against Miles, I'm not sure it's that simple. I think that Spiderman 2099 and his closest team knew the few details on why Miles was trying to escape but the majority didn't and just went to stop Miles as they were ordered to/thought Miles was doing damage to the timelines That's why so many joined Gwens team once they realised Miles could be right when they knew more information

My kid said miles' mom reminds her of her mom. And when he said bendición mami.. and she said dios te bendiga.. we both cried.. and felt so seen... one moment that got me to jump out of my seat and yell at the screen "thank you!' is when miles mom says you know that Puerto Rico is a part of the United States right? And I think every rican in the theater said AMÉN

as much as i liked the art and sound of the movie i felt like i was constantly on the edge of my seat waiting for an end or conclusion and it was so disappointing when there wasn’t one 😭 it just feels like a second movie… the first felt like it was a complete movie and it was disappointing that this didn’t fully feel the same. it definitely just felt like a movie made simply to buildup to the third and one that can’t exist without it

lol people are working hard to excuse extremely poor writing. It's an incomplete movie. Even Kill Bill had a natural resting place to end the first movie. This one didn't. The more I think on it, the less I like the movie. It Game of Thronesed itself.

I just have to say regardless of what the captain has to say, that I just thank everyone who contributed to this movie, It did everything so fricking good. its really hard to sum up in words the amount of stuff this movie did. It really is a love letter to the comics, and an awesome introduction to Miles. 10/10 for me, A trilogy that I know in the future I will watch over and over again.

I hear your argument about the myriad Spider-People just being Miguel’s foot soldiers instead of at least trying to help Miles. But here’s the thing: Do most of them even know what the conflict between Miles and Miguel is? All they know is that they’re supposed to “stop him.” Sure, Gwen, Peter B., Peni, etc., were in the room when Miguel explained everything. But the VAST majority of Spider-People weren’t. I think if they knew, a good number of them would actually side with Miles.

Imo the fact that Miles is an 'anomaly' perfectly counteracts my biggest problem with MCU multiverse films: the story has and always will be written. It really cheapened events like infinity war and endgame for me when it became that those events where just 'meant to happen'. The whole 'I'm going to write my own story' thing is actually a perfect antidote to one of the main issues with multiverse films
@eoghan00 Жыл бұрын
Is that true for the MCU though? I think the whole sacred timeline thing ensures certain things don’t happen, but doesn’t specifically make anything happen, which is why Loki can be a crocodile, so long as he doesn’t do anything to play into Kang conquering the multiverse.
@foggy9624 Жыл бұрын
@Eoghan yeah I think so, I can't remember the exact line but in one of the first episodes of Loki, Loki tries to say "the Avengers time travelled to defeat Thanos, go after them", and the reply from Ravonna is just "the Avengers were meant to do that" or something
@eoghan00 Жыл бұрын
@@foggy9624 yeah but the sacred timeline is her religion, she thinks it’s all meant to happen a certain way, when in reality it’s not some all knowing beings crafting a very intentional timeline, it’s just one dude trying to stop one event from happening. He doesn’t actually care if the Avengers beat Thanos so long as it doesn’t cause Kang to invade the multiverse.

Also, the score in the fight scenes are a stunning maturation of the ideas from the first movie - here, the fights are clear and dynamic through space, taking full advantage of the characters abilities, but also expressing their personalities - Miguel’s animalistic movements. And the SCORE and soundtrack take off and slide in this film - the end of the movie where every part of the score is fighting itself with different motifs crashing into each other is genius. And the emotional depth steps up - I enjoyed spider verse one, but across the spider verse is such a deepening of the concepts. I am putting it in my empire, strikes back tear of actually, good to better than the original movie sequels.

To be fair the different spider-men were specifically chosen by Miguel so naturally they all probably would agree even in the smaller parts, and only some of them like hobie would even think otherwise, and miguel only acts like this after the credit scene from the first, where he acted normal

The issue with multiverse stories is that there should be an infinite number of versions of a person, with some small or large variation. We only ever see mostly Peter variations in this movie but there should be a bunch of Miguels, Gwens, and even Miles who have gone through the same experiences but we don't see that. It could be that they don't want the movie to get too complicated. But I'd imagine the other Miles variants would side would our Miles if they were actually shown in the movie.

It is important to note that the chase scene is not a reflection of blind loyalty to Miguel O'Hara. Many of the Spider-people are attempting to detain Miles because they feel he is being rash, but there were those questioning Miguel's stance and tactics. Most were of the mind that once Miles was detained he or Miquel could be reasoned with, rather than have a fight. If you notice most of this was playful and no one was out to harm Miles. And a handful did defect afterwards. The scene is more nuanced than "cogs in a machine."

I'm just amazed that Sony Pictures Animation, who haven't really made a whole ton of CGI films compared to their competition, were able to pull off such a stunning film (and the one before it, of course, but this one was just a work of art).
