What I also love is not just Doc Ock, but all the villains have real motivations and make us feel somewhat bad for them Rhino hated being the Rhino and just wanted to get out of his suit Scorpion was in serious debt from gambling and wanted it all gone Vulture wanted to extend his life as he had spinal cancer and didn't want to die Shocker was being threatened by Li's gang and forced him against his will to become Shocker again, even though he gave up his life of crime Li had severe mental illness and a traumatic past because of a science experiment gone wrong, and even though he was trying to do good by making others happy, his demons sadly got the best of him Almost every villain felt human and we knew why they were evil. Life gave them the hardest times, and in turn it created monsters. THAT is how villains should be done

Alp Gul No Electro I think is one of the most human characters in this game, in the boss battle where Spider-Man fights Electro and Vulture, Spidey makes a Rocky joke and the joke completely flies over Vultures head but then a few minutes later, Electro says “Spider-Man, I must break you.”

I think what makes this games' story as good as Spider-Man 2 is both of these stories tackles sacrifice. For example, Peter sacrificed his relationship with Octavius to save the city and he sacrificed Aunt May for the development of the cure. This is what makes a real hero. I love this game goddamn.

This moment alone is great. But it's magnified by the previous scene in which the same thing happens but in the opposing fashion. Otto also knew but his attitude was selfish. Knowing Peter was Spider-man but still choosing to fight him, to hurt him, to destroy him. Otto wanted his first before anyone else. And his comment and sneer at the end about Peter's identity... Peter's anger towards someone he idolized is brilliant. It makes only a little bit easier to walk away. All of this is in complete contrast to May's scene. She loves him and knows that he has to save the city before her; she accepts that. She knows that he'll do the right thing even if it means losing her. And that alone makes it so much harder for him to let her go; how do you let someone so good, so wonderful, die? Even the fade away is opposite: we hear Otto screaming for Peter to help him; to save him. And May... she accepts her fate and goes quietly.

Combat with regular enemies was amazing but the boss fights were disappointing. Nome of them were were a real challenge. Only the last 2 were really any sort of a challenge and even those were pretty easy, especially compared to bosses in games like Ultimate Spider-Man. The rest were too simple and consisted of too many button prompts and repetitive animations. Aside from that though this game is fantastic and easily the best Spidey game out there.

Another thing is, every single line of voice acting was done amazingly, every time, it felt like it was actually being said by the characters in the situations they were in, instead of it sounding like a voice mail from a tired person sitting in their home. Like when Spider-Man is fighting, it sounds like he’s breathing a bit heavier. You can feel the emotions. It’s not just toneless “I need to go stop Doc” like in other spider-man games.

Most of Webbs directing work involves character studies and growth and human relationships and he applied that to Spider-Man.

I recently just finished playing this game and I had gotten accidentally spoiled about Aunt May's death beforehand, AND YET when she uttered her last line to a conflicted Peter - "You know what to do" - i still absolutely broke man. This game was an absolute gem, a true love letter to Spidy fans (just like how Into the Spider-verse was!) and I honestly think he's the best version of Spider Man to date! Well maaaybe along with Peter B. Parker - they both share the #1 Peter Parker spot in my heart together ❤️

Having Spider-Man in the MCU has been very detrimental to a lot of people's enjoyment of the films, though. A lot of Homecoming's biggest issues deal with the MCU taking attention away from more important things, like developing the characters and story. It hurts a movie when you have to constantly take time out to reference a random event in the MCU, make a joke about an Avenger or worst of all, have to throw in a cameo of a bigger hero. Tony would've been fine in Homecoming if his presence wasn't so overextended. It's a line too far to give Spider-Man a suit that does literally anything you could imagine, because it gives the action no tension when you know that Peter's magic suit has an instant solution for it. The movie only feels like a true Spider-Man movie for the short time that Peter loses the suit and has to actually be a hero of his own making, using only what he has created to be a hero. But then the movie ends and he gets the suit back anyway, little changed from who he was before. Imagine if Spider-Man 2 had to allocate at least fifteen minutes of its runtime to MCU related cameos, references and easter eggs? What would result is what Homecoming is, unfocused and overburdened by a universe that intrudes on what would've otherwise been an interesting coming of age story for Peter. I hope that when Peter fights the Sinister Six I don't have to watch Iron Man, Cap or Hulk busting in to help Spider-Man, because then my patience will really be up.

You know what also makes this better than the films? It handles the "Multi-Villian Dilemma" beautifully. The Sinister Six are all interconnected and have a central focus, their formation stemming from Otto's madness and how he plans to aid them in return for getting his revenge on Norman. Heck, even Fisk is a large part of the plot, even though he is dealt with in the first 30 minutes. His absence creates the power vacuum necessary for Li to begin his assault and inspire Otto. Anyone else *love* how in the final batle with Ock, it takes the scene from Spider-Man 2 that we were *all* thinking of and completely reverses it? Instead of Ock realising that Peter is Spider-Man, Peter realises Ock already knew. Honestly when his mask broke, I was convinced it would follow in Spider-Man 2's footsteps but somehow it did the exact opposite and it's *better.*

Peter's anger in that scene really sold this interpretation of the character for me, Insomniac understands that Peter has a full range of emotion; he's not just a goofball or a stoic hero. The game is almost a character study on him, its brilliant.

The ending was epic and heartbreaking all at once. You just feel a total lump in your throat seeing Otto fall so far from grace, and share Peter's horror in witnessing how much he'd changed from the simple man of science he was such a short time before to someone more conniving, like Osborn. Another way the game flipped the script from Spider-Man 2 was in how Peter was able to convince Octavious to stop his actions at the end of that film and ultimately volunteer to sacrifice himself for the greater good, when in the game Otto cannot be reasoned with no matter how hard Peter tries and so he is forced to fight against his mentor without holding back, because he needs to get the serum secured. I love Spider-Man 2, but I really enjoyed the way that the game raised the stakes so high in a different way. So much rides on Peter beating Ock, but it's painful to watch and play because you know you're hurting a man who was once so good. The game did what the film also did so beautifully: it showed us Ock before he lost himself and because we cared about him before he broke bad our hearts broke as we, like Peter, had no other option left but to fight him.

One of the things about this game that will stick with me, amongst an endless amount, is how certain lines or ideas were addressed in the early hours and came back at the end in what is a very satisfying execution of storytelling. There's the duality of man (Martin Li), the mystery of Devil's Breath, Ock's gradual path towards breaking bad, and the way Peter and MJ grow closer together again throughout the game. But the one thing that really hit me, and was the least obvious for me to spot, was how Aunt May's now famous saying of, "When You Help Someone, You Help Everyone" is seen in a new light by the end of the game. I was moved by how Peter lived up to Ock's statement about how you have to make the hardest decisions to change the world when he sacrificed May to save all of New York, but in doing so he also showed that May's positive words can't always be true. Peter couldn't help save one person, that person being Aunt May, and still go on to help everyone else. He had to help everyone at the expense of the one, and lost the dearest person in his life because of it. It reminds me of another famous Aunt May line from Spider-Man 2, which is only fitting for how much this game feels in tune with the themes and emotions of that movie: "I believe there's a hero in all of us, that keeps us honest, gives us strength, makes us noble, and finally allows us to die with pride, even though sometimes we have to be steady, and give up the thing we want the most. Even our dreams." Fuck I love this game.
